About the Musicians

Jennifer Rhyne is Assistant Professor of Flute and Music Theory at Pacific Lutheran University. Before joining the faculty of PLU, she taught at Fort Hays State University in Kansas. She is a member of Symphony Tacoma and the IWO and director of the Tacoma . She performs frequently with ensembles such as Vashon Opera and the Blessed Sacrament Church Baroque Orchestra, as well as on recital and series in the region. Rhyne is serving as the Assistant Program Chair for the 2017 National Flute Association Convention in Minneapolis. The North Carolina native holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience from Oberlin College. Her teachers include Kathleen Chastain and Michel Debost at Oberlin, Lorna McGhee at the University of Michigan (MM degree), Carol Wincenc at Stony Brook University (DMA degree), and Pierre-Yves Artaud at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. She has been a prize winner in competitions sponsored by the National Flute Association, the Texas Flute Society, the Albuquerque Flute Association, and the Washington, DC Flute Society and has performed at Carnegie Hall. A dedicated pedagogue, her articles have been published in School Band and Orchestra Magazine and Flute Talk, and she has been a featured lecturer and masterclass clinician at the National Flute Association Convention, Kansas Music Educators Convention, the University of Oregon, Cornish College of the Arts, Ohio University, Portland State University, Western Kentucky University, and Columbus State University in Georgia as well as a frequent adjudicator for contests in the Northwest. Her students have won prizes in competitions sponsored by PLU, the Coeur d’Alene Symphony, the Tacoma Philharmonic, the Washington Music Educators Association, and the National Flute Association. The Sølvvinden Flute Ensemble was founded in 1994 by the ensemble’s first director, Rae Terpenning. The ensemble performs frequently at PLU and venues such as Town Hall in Seattle, the Washington State Capitol Rotunda, the Concert Series of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Olympia, and Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. In past years, the ensemble has been selected to perform at the Washington Music Educators Association conference in Yakima and at the National Flute Association Convention. The flute choir performs using Burkart and Philip Hammig , Trevor James alto flutes, and a Kingma . The Norwegian term Sølvvinden can be translated as The Silver Wind.
