Rising food prices: which provinces are the most vulnerable?

Food prices might rise sharply in coming months, according to a growing number of forecasts. Survey data show which parts of the country might be most vulnerable.

Grain-based food – which includes products made from maize, rice and wheat – account for 4,8% of total spending for the average South African household.

A provincial breakdown shows that households might be the most affected by rising prices. For every R100 spent on food, households in the province spend an average of R39 on grain- based products, followed by Eastern Cape (R33), KwaZulu-Natal (R33), (R31) and North West (R28).

Infographic of the month

Stats SA released preliminary gross domestic product (GDP) figures showing that the economy grew by 1,3% in 2015, down from 1,5% in 2014 and 2,2% in 2013.

The main contributor to the slowdown in 2015 was agriculture. Severe drought conditions saw the industry contracting by 8,4%, the largest annual fall in agriculture production since 1995. The decrease in 2015 was mainly due to a sharp drop in the production of field crops.

The finance industry expanded by 2,8%. As this is the largest industry, comprising 21% of the entire economy, its increase in activity was the main positive contributor to the 1,3% annual rise in GDP.
