CAMPUS ASCSU senators demand response to ‘blackface incident’ By Charlotte Lang @chartrickwrites

Senators in the Associat- ed Students of Colorado State University called for a direct re- sponse to the recent “blackface incident” on campus. Chief of Sta‚ Melissa Que- sada said that ASCSU had sent a message to the student body emphasizing that ASCSU was not associated with the inci- dent in any way, shape or form. “We’d like to make sure that we are expressing a culture of taking care of each other and making sure we are very re- spectful of our community on campus,” Quesada said. “We want to make sure you are tak- ing care of each other.” Quesada said that ASCSU is looking into what they can do to foster an environment of inclu- sivity on campus. “Our Department of Diver- sity and Inclusion is already in the works of doing something in response to the event that we can incorporate the larger cam- pus on,” Quesada said. This may take the form of a Diversity Day for the University. SCIENCE CSU professors lead NASA’s weather, hurricane mapping mission

Colorado State University is changing the game when it comes to using satellite mapping weather systems. TEMPEST-D is a mission led by CSU electrical and computer engi- neering professor Steven Reising that aims to map storms — especial- ly hurricanes. In fact, TEMPEST-D, which stands for Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems Demonstration, was just recently used to map out Hurricane Dorian. Professor Chandrasekaran Venkatachalam is helping to co-in- vestigate the mission, which is also partnered with NASA’s Jet Propul- sion Laboratory and Blue Canyon Technologies. “TEMPEST is a technology demonstration,” Reising said. “It’s based on the CubeSat standard, which was developed for students to get their ideas into space.”

A CubeSat is a miniature satel- lite made up of multiple cubic units. Small and lightweight, they’re often put into orbit from the Internation- al Space Station. According to a mission over- view from JPL, TEMPEST-D will reduce the risk, cost and develop- ment time of a future constellation of nanosatellites. These satellites will directly observe the time evo- lution of clouds and study the con- ditions controlling the transition from non-precipitating to precipi- tating clouds using high-temporal resolution observations. Reising said the actual satellite itself is about 14 inches by 8 inches by 4 inches, weighing 25 pounds. Though the technology to map out storms already exists, it’s both large and expensive, Reising said. NFL See how Rams performed in the NFL after week one

Colorado State might not be Alabama or Clemson when it comes to producing NFL tal- ent, but a string of somewhat productive seasons over the last few years has led to an in- fl ux of Ram talent in the NFL. The Rams have nine alumni currently on active NFL ros- ters. Let’s take a look at how the former Rams did in week one of the NFL season. Wide Receiver - Michael Gallup The 2017-18 graduate is one of the most successful players in CSU history, as well as an all-time great Mountain West player. Michael Gallup, a junior college transfer, had numerous accomplishments in his two year CSU career. Gallup set the single-season receptions record (100), and in his senior year, he was a fi nalist for the Fred Biletniko” award: given to the nation’s top receiver. Gallup is also second in school history in single-sea- son touchdowns, from when he caught 14 his junior year. For over 10 years, Gryphon Games & Comics has been the prominent comic book and board game store in Fort Collins. Established in 2005, Gryphon has been a staple of the commu- nity as a destination for comics, board games, toys, cards and a menagerie of geek merchandise. Gryphon has also taken a dual role as a type of community cen- ter, hosting “Magic: The Gather- ing” tournaments, “Dungeons & Dragons” games and a reading group. Now, the company is work- ing to transition into a coopera- tive business in hopes to engage the community and secure the store’s place as a family favorite for generations to come. As a co-op, Gryphon will al- low a collective of people to take ownership in the company.
