Introduction It is the 51st Millennium, and the war continues. There was no great conflagration or calamitous final battle. Across the vastness of the galaxy, the Imperium died. Not with a bang, but with a whimper. The galactic empire of humanity crumbled, its enemies too many, too great and too terrible to imagine. The great conflict of Octavius had no victory, a war without end. In the fiery chasm of strife, the locust and the green holocaust fused, as beast looked upon barbarian and both saw the other as kin. The new entity spread with a speed undreamt of by ork or tyranid. War and hunger melded into a singular desire to ravage, rape and remake all in the image of the new devourer. The Devourer’s hybrid nightmares were regenerative, and spore-born, combining into a grand horror, which murdered the galaxy, leaving naught but fragments as it left. Metallic sentinels of unflinching dread rose up on some worlds, leaving them safe from the new devourer waaagh, but instead made them slaves to the silver sentinels, and fodder for their glowing metal gods. The Eldar who had held on to life for so long, slowly winked out of existence one craftworld at a time. Eventually, even the rumbling hearts of the avatars fell silent. For a time... In the dead craftworlds, something slithers through the infinity circuit to this day. Unfortunately, the great god of the dead, Ynnead, is trapped within this infinity circuit, howling its mournful song into the darkness, eternally hungry in its desire to wreak vengeance on She Who Thirsts. -

Closed Timelike Curves, Singularities and Causality: A Survey from Gödel to Chronological Protection Jean-Pierre Luminet Aix-Marseille Université, CNRS, Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille , France; Centre de Physique Théorique de Marseille (France) Observatoire de Paris, LUTH (France) [email protected] Abstract: I give a historical survey of the discussions about the existence of closed timelike curves in general relativistic models of the universe, opening the physical possibility of time travel in the past, as first recognized by K. Gödel in his rotating universe model of 1949. I emphasize that journeying into the past is intimately linked to spacetime models devoid of timelike singularities. Since such singularities arise as an inevitable consequence of the equations of general relativity given physically reasonable assumptions, time travel in the past becomes possible only when one or another of these assumptions is violated. It is the case with wormhole-type solutions. S. Hawking and other authors have tried to save the paradoxical consequences of time travel in the past by advocating physical mechanisms of chronological protection; however, such mechanisms remain presently unknown, even when quantum fluctuations near horizons are taken into account. I close the survey by a brief and pedestrian discussion of Causal Dynamical Triangulations, an approach to quantum gravity in which causality plays a seminal role. In these space-times, the Principle of Self-Consistency demands an harmony between local and global affairs that excludes grandfather-like paradoxes. However, self-existing objects trapped in CTCs are not seemingly avoided by the standard interpretation of this principle, usually constrained to a dynamical framework. In this paper we discuss whether we are committed to accept an ontology with self-existing objects if CTCs actually occur in the universe. In addition, the epistemological status of the Principle of Self- Consistency is analyzed and a discussion on the information flux through CTCs is presented. 1 Introduction One of the most fascinating aspects of the general theory of relativity (GTR) is that its field equations have solutions where the formation of closed time-like curves (CTCs) is possible. These curves represent the world lines of any physical system in a temporally orientable space-time that, moving always in the future direction, ends arriving back at some point of its own past. Although solutions of the Einstein field equations (EFEs) where CTCs exist are known at least since G¨odel's (1949) original work, it has been just in the last dozen of years that physicists have shown a strong and sustained interest on this topic. The most famous one is the black hole solution. One now believes that in the center of many galaxies there is a rotating super-massive black hole, the Kerr black hole. Because there is an axis of rotation, the Kerr solution is a member of the family of the axially symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations. A legitimate ques- tion could be: are there other axially or cylindrically symmetric asymptotically flat solutions of the equations of Einstein with a classical or non-classical matter distribution and with correct asymptotical behavior, just as the Kerr solution? Many attempts are made, such as the Weyl-, Papapetrou- and Van Stockum solution. None of these attempts result is physically acceptable solution. Often, these solutions possess closed timelike curves (CTC’s). The possibility of the formation of CTC’s in GRT seems to be an obstinate problem tosolve in GRT. At first glance, it seems possible to construct in GRT causality violating solutions. CTC’s suggestthe possibility of time-travel with its well-known paradoxes. Although most physicists believe that Hawking’s chronology protection conjecture holds in our world, it can be alluring to investigate the mathematical under- lying arguments of the formation of CTC’s. There are several spacetimes that can produce CTC’s. Famous is the Tipler-cylinder. -
