Covid 19 Adjustments at Melbourne High School 2020 Spring Semester - School campus closed from March 18th through the end of the school year. Our students learned via the distance model across seven subjects. Teachers were required to be available for students during a three-hour block of the day. 2021 School year – the school calendar did change for this year beginning 8/24 and ending 6/3; grading scales and policies have not changed; graduation requirements for students have not changed; instructional methods have changed to accommodate “elearners” (students who log into class from home); schedules have changed to a four period block day which has added an additional course to the year for every student; our testing requirements have not changed

MISSION STATEMENT- The Melbourne High School community empowers students to strive for excellence and to become lifelong learners.

COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL Melbourne High School, serving the community for over ninety years, is located in Brevard County, bordering the Atlantic Ocean, near the middle of the Florida Peninsula. This high technology area has continued to grow as a result of the Kennedy Space Center and growing aero-space industry. Numerous electronic and tech industries are embedded throughout the region. A local symphony orchestra, art center, community theaters, and museums of and provide cultural activities. The Chamber of Commerce, along with many businesses and industries, actively support the school.

Melbourne High School, located on a 40-acre site, serves approximately 2200 students in grades nine through twelve. Rich in academic tradition, Melbourne High School also boasts many excellent extra and co-curricular programs with the academic body regularly winning state and national recognition in Science Research, Robotics, choral and band competitions, mock trial, Odyssey of the Mind, , and student-produced publications.

MELBOURNE HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI Melbourne High School has graduated many successful scholars for the state of Florida who have been accepted to universities such as Harvard, Yale, Cornell, MIT, Georgetown, Duke, Dartmouth, Stanford, Tulane, West Point, Princeton, U.S. Naval Academy, Notre Dame, University of Pennsylvania, University of Miami, Wellesley , University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Emory, Florida State, University of Florida, and many more. Our graduates return to our school to help tutor underclassman, to support our athletic programs as coaches, spectators, or financial supporters, and our alumni enroll their own children here with some families having generations of graduates.

ACADEMICS The school year is divided into two semesters of 18 weeks each. One-half credit may be earned per class each semester. The school operates on a seven-period day; all classes meet approximately 50 minutes each day, five days a week. Students may take academic subjects in non-honors, honors, and accelerated programs. Select accelerated classes are available through Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, dual enrollment, collegiate high school, and technical courses. SCHOOL DEMOGRAPHICS Enrollment for 2021 at Melbourne High School is approximately 2,100 students. There are 24 percent of the student body enrolled in the Free/Reduced Lunch Program. ASSESSMENTS FSA – Florida Standards Assessment administered in freshman and sophomore years. Students must score 350 or higher to meet Florida state graduation requirements. FSA Algebra I EOC - Florida Standards Assessment administered upon completion of the course. Students must score 497 or higher to meet Florida state graduation requirements. PSAT - Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test administered to all sophomores and available to all students in the fall. ACCELERATED CLASSES/PROGRAMS Dual Enrollment – Eastern Florida State College and Florida Institute of Technology, offer qualified students to take college courses and earn college credit in addition to high school curriculum. Requires a qualifying GPA and appropriate test scores. Collegiate High School – An invitation-only program for students with qualifying GPA’s. Students may earn an AA College Degree and High School Diploma simultaneously by taking dual enrollment and high school classes from 10th – 12th grade. Maintained GPA and test score requirements. Advanced Placement Courses – 22 classes offered in History, Government, Psychology, , , , Calculus, Statistics, English Language, English Literature, Computer Science, and Art. International Baccalaureate Diploma Program - A demanding two-year curriculum, 24 IB Diploma classes in standard and higher level options across six subject areas. The IB Diploma is recognized by leading universities around the world. The IB curriculum is designed to meet the highest academic standards required of any high school worldwide. In addition to earning 26 credits, the student must pass the Reading on the 10th grade Florida Standards Assessment Test (FSA) and pass the Algebra 1 EOC.
