This year, ASLS is highlighting and celebrating the research support academic and special libraries provide to their constituents to develop and create books, articles, and other products. Many New York State libraries are instrumental with providing assistance to authors who write and publish books, scientists who produce new inventions, journalists who write daily news articles, and manufacturers who develop new merchandise for consumption, to name a few. As follows are contributing New York academic and special libraries and their corresponding “products.”

The NEW IBM Power6 575 supercomputer : The library has supported research on water cooling methods, used in the supercomputer (which was introduced in April). The return to water cooling from air cooling has enabled the Power6 575 to significantly reduce data center energy costs. Present-day data centers, while being able to offer ever- increasing computing power, face the challenge of keeping energy costs at a manageable level. The increased levels of computing power also increase the level of power required to run and cool the systems.

Don't worry 'bout that nozzle, kid, 'cause we don't do fires anymore. [videotape] Fire Engineering; PennWell; 2001; From the videocassette case jacket: "Has a senior member ever uttered those words to a probie in your fire department? Have your probies been brainwashed into believing that since 'fires are down,' learning the art and science of firefighting extremely well is just not important anymore? Do you tolerate mediocrity on the fireground in the interest of service diversity? Does it seem that your organization has lost focus or has too many missions to focus on? Andy Fredericks, a veteran firefighter who has extensively written and lectured on the subject of engine company tactics, will examine these and many more issues that distract us and demoralize us. He will explore the myths and realities that shape and guide us. And most importantly, he will offer practical suggestions to increase fireground safety and effectiveness in order to help his brother and sister firefighters stay alive in the new millenium."

SUNY Brockport

State University of New York at Brockport(Campus History), by Gigliotti, Leslie, and O’Brien. Arcadia Publishing, 2006

State University of New York at Brockport chronicles the history of a highly respected public college in western New York State. Founded by Erie Canal entrepreneurs as a Baptist college in 1835, the institution became an academy in 1841, a state-funded normal school in 1867, a state teachers college in 1941, and finally the comprehensive college, within the nation's largest public university system, that it is today. The postWorld War II era witnessed two bursts of dramatic enrollment growth, one underwritten by the 1944 GI Bill, the other inspired by local initiatives and expansive state funding in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The college's selection to host the 1979 International Special Olympics concluded a 20-year period of dynamic innovation. In the 1980s, the college struggled to adjust to reduced public funding and declining enrollments before achieving stability and regaining its solid reputation.
