n 2015, the Independent Self-governing Trade Union ‘Solidarity’ (NSZZ Solidarność) Iis celebrating its 35th anniversary. The Polish trade union was founded on 17 September 1980 at the Gdańsk Shipyard under the leadership of Lech Wałęsa. Soon it spread all over Poland and also embraced institutions of higher education, including the Jagiellonian University. On 2 October 1980, the JU Coordinating Commission called into being the University Founding Committee. Prof. Ryszard Łużny was elected its chairman. The hope related to this new trade union led to 3,258 (out of 3,800) employees of the JU becoming its members by 31 December 1980. During the First Convention of Delegates of NSZZ Solidarność at the Jagiellonian University, held on 10 January 1981, the authorities of the University Commission were elected. Its chairman was Michał Pułaski from the Institute of History. These events and names concerning the birth of Solidarity in the academic circles of Kraków were shown in the exhibition located along the park lane from the JU Collegium Novum to St

The birth of this movement was not only a political revolution, but also a breakthrough in people’s minds. Mr Marchewczyk talked about the structure of the exhibition: the boards showing the birth of Solidarity at the particular universities, the documents, names and photos of the founders and the symbolic character of the last board: the names of those Solidarity members who passed away. It was the JU Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak who officially opened the exhibition. His reflections concentrated on the aspect of people’s lack of fear during that period: people stopped being afraid of the totalitarian communist regime, and that was a marvellous thing. All of these significant, emotion-filled words were spoken at the Liberty Oak at Collegium Novum, the tree that was planted there to commemorate Poland’s regained freedom in 1918, and witnessed the most important events in the last decades of the Jagiellonian University’s history. These events were accompanied by an artistic-cultural programme: express language courses in Polish and Russian, 10-minute bilingual readings of literary works as well as short theatrical and music performances. The first joint seminars were held in Bochum, and JU organised a seminar in 1993. In recent years, the seminars are held alternately in Germany and Poland. Finally, the participants talked over the following issues: bilateral partnerships, staff and student mobility implying both education and research, integrated offer of summer schools also at PhD level, internships, pre-approved/packaged offer of courses, compatible mobility windows and involvement of new partners from outside the network. The afternoon session began with the strategic talk ‘New Technologies in Teaching and Learning at the University of Ljubljana’ delivered by Prof. Marko Radovan. Firstly, he reflected on the challenges and diffcult trends in teaching and learning and then discussed ‘blended learning’ as the most common teaching strategy for implementing new technologies in education, the shift from teaching to learning, from teacher to designer and mentor, the gamification of learning and massive open online courses. Afterwards the participants of the IRUN Meeting visited three units of the University of Ljubljana and listened to their presentations: the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (Multimedia Learning Cloud for Advanced University Education), the Jožef Stefan Institute (Opening Up Slovenia) and the Faculty of Biotechnology (Blended learning as a Tool for Class and Long Distance Learning – the case of the PhD programme in environmental protection). Thanks to the financial help provided by the Króliczewski Educational Fund, four students of the Jagiellonian University participated in the Cambridge Summer School. Here are their reports.

Antonina Łuszczykiewicz 1st year of PhD programme in Culture Studies

aking part in the Cambridge University Summer Schools 2015 was a great, enriching experience for at least a few reasons. First of all, I found the medieval town Tof Cambridge unique – on the one hand, it is charming and picturesque, and on the other hand – lively and energetic thanks to thousands of tourists coming from all around the world. However, the most important advantage was the opportunity to get a bit of a feeling how it is to study at one of the world’s best universities.

As a PhD student of culture studies, I found the courses which A. Łuszczykiewicz I had chosen from the Interdisciplinary Term II programme A. Łuszczykiewicz and participants from Singapore extremely interesting and useful. The first course, ‘History of art II. Art and power: how value is made,’ led by Sian Griffiths, gave and their Empire, 1900-97’ conducted by Dr Sean Lang, was, in me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge of the perception academic terms, a real masterpiece. Dr Lang is one of the most of art in various epochs, as well as to share and discuss my views famous and respected authorities in the history of the British with other participants. The other course, ‘The British people Empire. During the classes he presented a holistic approach to the history of the Empire, ranging from the Boer War to the Falkland Islands conflict and from children’s patriotic education at the beginning of the 20th century to the contemporary vision of the Empire in Great Britain and its former colonies. Since both my BA and MA theses related to the history of colonialism in Asia and colonial stereotypes, I perceive the opportunity of getting some new perspectives and exploring some new contexts as an especially rewarding experience, not to mention the chance to share some ideas on Rudyard Kipling’s worldview, on which I had already done some detailed research. Besides the Interdisciplinary Term II classes, I also attended morning and evening plenary lectures. Listening to almost twenty specialists enabled me to compare various teaching methods and broaden my knowledge of various topics, from Alexander the Great’s conquests, through the Enigma mysteries, to the environmental challenges. Another advantage was the access to the Cambridge University Library, where I found books and articles useful not only for my final essay, but also for my own research project. Although the academic values of the Cambridge Summer School cannot be overestimated, the international, friendly atmosphere among students will always make me think about Cambridge in a very positive way – I still keep in touch with some of the Summer School’s participants, hoping that one day I will welcome them in the city of Kraków. Was there any problem or disadvantage? Perhaps only one – the weather. However, the moment the temperature fell to 14 degrees Celsius in the middle of July, I finally understood why the weather is one of the most important topics for the British

Cambridge is a lovely town that offers a lot of possibilities to spend your time after classes with your newly-met friends, like famous punting on the river, drinking ‘DNA beer’ in The Eagle pub, visiting colleges, museums and all the places where great scientists lived, studied and discovered their theories and inventions. The Summer School at the University of Cambridge was one of the best experiences in my life, connecting science and adventure. The information I gained there will help me in my scientific career to look wider at many phenomena, and the friendships I have made will remind me of this great time.

the Jagiellonian University and in the city of Kraków through a J. Bogdanowicz series of events and activities. The OW lasted seven days and started with ‘Welcome Meeting,’ held in the historical and famous aula of Collegium Novum. During this official event, the ISMO team and the ESN members greeted new students and gave them all information concerning their studies at the Jagiellonian University. International students were also informed about the University’s educational offer and services provided by the Rector’s Proxy for Student Safety and Security, as well as the representatives of the Disability Support Service, the Teaching Quality Assessment Team and of course the ESN team. Later that day, during the ‘City Game,’ students had a chance to get to know the city of Kraków in a quite unusual way. Divided into small groups, they received various tasks to complete. As a result, they had a lot of fun, but also acquired some practical information about the city.
