What we do? Active Farmers - providing group fitness classes in small farming communities

Established in 2015 at , NSW and now a registered health promotion charity, Active Farmers runs regular group fitness classes in over 40 small farming communities with limited or no access to other health and well-being services. Our classes are facilitated by a dedicated team of qualified personal trainers who are on the ground at grassroots level making a difference every week.

Active Farmers averages 1,000 regular monthly participants in over 40 small farming communities stretching more than 4,300km from Hughenden in Queensland to Tambellup in Western , and then down to Campbell Town in Tasmania, with many additional communities in the pipeline.

Like farming, class attendance can be seasonal, and our stats show SEPTEMBER was a bumper month:

We ran 243 classes Had an average of 7 people per class Over 1,823 participants

Growth, classes & participation

During 2020 we went from 38 communities to 50 communities. Unfortunately four trainers (for various reasons) decided to discontinue the service in late 2019 and despite best efforts to find replacement trainers during 2020, we have lost a total of 3 affecting the loss of five communities. This has resulted in a total of 43 communities being serviced to date. Community growth was more than 32% and we grew to include the state of South Australia, and loss for 2020 was 10%.

We have grown to now be running over 200 classes per month for over 1,500 attendances each month. In total we have close to 1,000 regular participants across every state of Australia. This year we have seen an increase in the average number of participants per class from 4/5 to seven people per class. Statistics show 25% male and 75% female attendance demonstrating a need to understand why this is occurring and developing strategy to increase male participation numbers. This is particularly important given men are more vulnerable to physical and mental health conditions.

Chair report 2020 I would sincerely like to thank the Board for their support over my time at Active Farmers. As with all start-ups there have been some teething problems, but we have 2020 has been a challenging year for Active Farmers, as it has been for everyone. been able to deal with these because we had such a good spread of knowledge and skills on the Board. We started the year with great optimism and a full program planned. I remember It is with mixed feeling that I step down as Chair of just before the games in March, we first heard of COVID-19. We had to decide Active Farmers Board, but I feel the timing is right, whether to run the Games or not as they had just brought in the 500 people and I am confident there is a robust structure in restriction to events. We decided to go ahead with some spectator limits and the place to ensure the continued growth and success Games were a great success. for Active Farmers. CEO’s report. John Hewitt In last year’s report I noted that one of our goals was to increase participation Chair numbers which we have been able to achieve this year. We have also developed excellent systems for monitoring our numbers. Our success has also had a positive effect on our fundraising activities. A highlight of this is our new partnership with GrainCorp which has helped Active Farmers to a strong financial position. A word from incoming Chair Lyn Angel

Revenue 2019/2020 Active Farmers is a not-for-profit organisation and relies heavily on fundraising and donations from the community, patrons and foundations, in addition to class revenue to enable us to service Active Farmers communities.

Covid 19 has had an impact on both our revenue and expenditure in 2020.

We saw a decrease in class revenue compared with previous year due to the period of free online classes during the height of Covid. However, we were pleased to have been able to provide this free service to our participants in what was a difficult time.

Funds were budgeted for community workshops and equipment in 2020, but the provision of these has been challenging this year.

# Running costs include venue hire, marketing & promotion, office expenses, communication & insurance etc.

We believe that working within these four strategic areas will help us continue to build stronger and more resilient farming communities for many more people living in the bush, who all matter. These areas of priority have strategic plans in place to reach our goals mentioned by Marliese such as; increasing male attendance, finding more trainers and expanding on our events and service offerings.

In addition, there is certainly much more to be understood about the current state of the physical & mental health of those living in the bush and what we can do to help more. This will be another area of focus for me next year.

Until then, I wish you all a very happy & healthy Christmas and New Year, surrounded by friends and family and I can't wait to see you all in 2021! I have very much enjoyed watching Active Farmers continue to thrive from the sidelines as a Board and committee/s member, especially Many thanks, during an extremely challenging year.
