Wildlife of the North Hills: Birds, Animals, Butterflies Oakland, California 2005 About this Booklet The idea for this booklet grew out of a suggestion from Anne Seasons, President of the North Hills Phoenix Association, that I compile pictures of local birds in a form that could be made available to residents of the north hills. I expanded on that idea to include other local wildlife. For purposes of this booklet, the “North Hills” is defined as that area on the Berkeley/Oakland border bounded by Claremont Avenue on the north, Tunnel Road on the south, Grizzly Peak Blvd. on the east, and Domingo Avenue on the west. The species shown here are observed, heard or tracked with some regularity in this area. The lists are not a complete record of species found: more than 50 additional bird species have been observed here, smaller rodents were included without visual verification, and the compiler lacks the training to identify reptiles, bats or additional butterflies. We would like to include additional species: advice from local experts is welcome and will speed the process. A few of the species listed fall into the category of pests; but most - whether resident or visitor - are desirable additions to the neighborhood. We hope you will enjoy using this booklet to identify the wildlife you see around you. Bear Creek Greenway July 2018 Newsletter FOUNDATION Meet Board Member Shana Thomas Roxy Ann I grew up in a family where spending time outdoors was just the norm. We would camp and hike year round, and I developed a deep appreciation for green spaces. I continue On the Central Point Section of the Greenway Trail at this lifestyle today with my own children, fostering in them the same love for the outdoors. DAWSON Tm• paucity of data on the body temperaturesof small gallinaceous birds prompts us to report miscellaneousobservations which we have made over the past severalyears on the body temperaturesof the Cali- fornia Quail, Lophortyxcalifornicus, a commonresident in grasslandand chaparral from southernOregon to southern Baja Cal/fornia, and the Gambel's Quail, L. œambelii,a residentin the desert regionsof south- western United States and northwestern Mexico. The habitats of both speciesare characterizedby high summer temperaturesand moderate winter conditions. We have therefore paid particular attention to capacity for temperature regulation in hot environments. We found that when ambient (environmental)temperature rose, the birds' body temperaturecould rise by as much as 4ø C. (7.2ø F.), without ill effects. Ability to maintain above normal body temperatures higher than ambient temperaturesfacilitates transfer of excessbody heat to the environment. It is probablya major avian adaptationto hot conditions. The data presentedwere acquiredincidental to work on other species and for that reasonare not comprehensive,but they serveto characterize aspectsof temperatureregulation in quail. MATERIALS AND METHODS The observationswere made on 8 adult and 2 juvenile California Quailcaptured on the LosAngeles campus of the Universityof California, and on 5 adult and 2 juvenile Gambers Quail capturedin the Colorado Desert, three miles south of Calipatria, Imperial County, California. The captive animals of both specieswere housedin cagesof half-inch wire mesh wh/ch measured 12 x 12 x 24 inches and had sand-covered floors. -

NATURAL HISTORY Taxonomy: There are six recognized subspecies of Yuma Myotis 1. Because of distributional uncertainties, it is unclear which subspecies occur in Wyoming. In general, the subspecies M. y. yumanensis occurs in the southern Rocky Mountains, while M. y. sociabilis occurs in the northern Rocky Mountains 1, 2. Description: Yuma Myotis may be difficult to identify in the field, even by skilled observers. The species is a small vespertilionid bat, but medium in size among bats in the genus Myotis. Pelage color is variable across the species’ range. Dorsal fur is short, dull, and varies from gray and brown to pale tan in color. Ventral fur is lighter in color, white or buffy. The ears, wing, and tail membranes are pale brown to gray 1. Males and females are identical in appearance, but females may be significantly larger than males in some populations 1. Juveniles are similar in appearance but can be differentiated from adults by the lack of ossified joints in the phalanges for the first summer 3, 4. W. Dawson, Laurie L. Bloomfield, Isabelle Charrier, and Christopher B. Sturdy University of Alberta Both black-capped (Poecile atricapillus) and mountain chickadees (Poecile gambeli) produce a chick- a-dee call that consists of several distinct note types. In some regions, these 2 species live sympatrically, and it has been shown that 1 species will respond weakly to songs of the other. This suggests that chickadee song, and potentially other of their vocalizations, contains species-specific information. We tested the possibility that call notes were acoustically sufficient for species identification. Black-capped and mountain non-D notes were summarized as a set of 9 features and then analyzed by linear discriminant analysis. Linear discriminant analysis was able to use these notes to identify species with 100% accuracy. We repeated this approach, but with black-capped and mountain D notes that were summarized as a set of 4 features. Linear discriminant analysis was able to use these notes to identify species with 94% accuracy. This demonstrates that any of the note types in these chickadee calls possesses sufficient information for species classification. We analyzed field body temperatures of neotropical salamanders (Feder et al. 1982b) to examine existing generalizations about salamander thermal ecology, which have been based almost entirely upon data for temperate zone species. Our findings can be summarized as follows: 1) Behavioral thermoregulation in the field is evidently uncommon among the vast majority of tropical and temperate salamander species. Body temperatures of tropical salamanders closely parallel seasonal and altitudinal changes in the thermal environment. 2) Body temperatures of salamanders show a complex relationship with latitude. Temperate zone species experience lower minimum temperatures than neotropical salamanders, but there are no consistent latitudinal trends in maximum body temperatures. Tropical plethodontids and ambysto matids show similar rates of decline in mean body temperature with increasing elevation, but am bystomatid temperatures are significantly warmer than plethodontid temperatures at the same ele vation. 3) Variation in body temperature is greater seasonally for temperate salamanders than tropical salamanders. At a given time or locality, however, variation in field body temperature among members of a population is similar for tropical and temperate salamanders. -
