I trust in the kindness of God forever EVENTS Principal’s Message

“God of all peoples in Jesus Christ Principal’s Message Principal’sDear Students, Staff, Message Family and Friends You call us from our foolishness to be you children 24-27 March coming amongst us like a kookaburra singing

Year 11 & 12 Exam the song of a new day.” At our College assembly on Tuesday we were Block proud to present the Old Boys of 1969 bursary

to Brianna Guy. Brianna is a year 11 student 28 March who gets involved in lots of activities and tries Interhouse Cross her best in all her subjects. She is an example Country of so many of our students who quietly go

about doing their best and reflecting the spirit 1 April of Edmund Rice and St Columban. Brianna TAS Sport Awards participated in the Garma festival excursion Evening last year and spoke to fellow students at the National Apology lunch in February about the 2 April impact of this trip on her life. We warmly Heritage Day congratulate Brianna on receiving this bursary and wish her every continued success for her 4 April senior years of schooling. We also are very End of Term 1 grateful for the generosity of our past students. In this case, Mr Denis Anthonisz, Principal of 22 April St Eugene College Burpengary and past Term 2 Commences student of St Columban's College, is the driving force behind this bursary. The college is very fortunate to have such a supportive group INSIDE of past students who take a very active interest in the life of the College and its students today. THIS EDITION

Principal’s Message P1 The Curriculum Assistance Program (CAP) continues to be a success in supporting students with their academic work. Each lunch time, staff supervise students who wish to catch up on work, and receive extra help with their school work. Students can self refer to P4 BCE Collection Notice CAP, or their class teacher may have referred them. It is testament to the dedication of the staff here that our Curriculum Coordinators give up their breaks to help students. Any Parent/Guardian P5 student wishing to get extra help needs only to go to Bobbio Café at first break and there Notices will be a teacher ready to offer assistance. When I visited Bobbio earlier this week, there were around 50 students in the café, many of whom were enjoying a hot chocolate while TAS Sport P6 doing their school work. Thank you to Mrs Schmike, and her dedicated helpers, for their commitment to staffing the coffee shop.

TAS Draw P8 As an organisation and a system of schools, the Federal Privacy Act 1988 requires Brisbane Catholic Education to have a detailed process about how BCE schools and offices collect, use, disclose and store the personal and sensitive information of our P10 Careers News consumers and how we respond to their breach of privacy complaints. BCE consumers are identified as parents, guardians, students, volunteers and prospective employees of Community Notices P11 BCE. The BCE privacy statement can be located on the BCE public website.

Tuckshop Rosters P12 As you may be aware, the Australian Federal Government has recently amended the Privacy Act 1988. The changes brought about by the amendments to this Act commence on 12 March 2014. A key amendment is the introduction of fines for failure to comply with privacy laws. These fines can amount to a maximum of $340,000 for an individual or CRICOS Reg No. 03347D $1.7M for an organisation.

Student of the Month - February 2014

Senior

Academic: Rhiannon Hogan Yr 12 is a consistently hard-working student. She seeks advice and support in her learning and responds positively to feedback. She has been working exceptionally well in Youth Ministry and has shown herself to be a confident student in the area of religious education. Rhiannon is to be commended for her determination and commitment to all areas of her work.

Sporting: Rusty Rosenberger, Callum Lethby, Callum Clarke, Jeremy Brand These 4 boys from Year 10 have been playing in both the Volleyball and Cricket teams this season. They are working very hard juggling training and playing in both teams to support the TAS Sporting Program. Without filling all of our TAS teams – we wouldn’t be a part of the TAS program.

Cultural: Katie Iliffe Yr 12 winner of the 2014 Lions Youth of the Year. Katie won both the Lions Youth of the Year as well as the Public Speaking award in the Morayfield Club round. She then went on to compete at the district round at Caloundra. As part of the competition, competitors sit through a judging panel of 3 (5 at district level), they present a five minute prepared speech and two impromptu speeches at each round. Congratulations Katie on your efforts!

School Spirit: Lauren Wilkins: Yr 12 has been instrumental in the fundraising efforts for O’Driscoll House and willingly volunteers to be involved in all activities, particularly the Valentine’s Day stall. She gives 100% effort in all she does and has always been an enthusiastic supporter of events. She becomes personally involved and is a fantastic role model for our Year 8 students. She is to be commended for her actions as they help build positive relationships and respect within our community.

VET: Emalee Cuthbertson Yr 12 has shown outstanding commitment to her vocational studies by using her hospitality skills to assist staff in the running of the Bobbio Coffee Shop. Emalee has worked tirelessly and with a professional attitude. Her knowledge of the coffee machine and the running of the coffee shop well meets industry standards and is to be commended.

Middle

Academic: Siobhan Bennett Yr 8 is an exceptional student who always completes her homework. She has an exceptional work effort and gives 100% to all tasks she undertakes. Her English writing skills are excellent. She is a quiet achiever who is a pleasure to teach.

Sporting: Bryah Guilfoyle Yr 9 Congratulations to Bryah for her selection in the under 19s regional tennis team. This is a fantastic achievement considering she is only 14 yrs of age and was one of only 4 selected out of 40 who trialed in the for this team. We wish her all the best as she competes in the U19 School State Tennis Championships.

Cultural: Madison Kettle Yr 9 Music. Mady is a keen music student who puts effort into all aspects of the course. She completes practical work and then gets straight into extension work. She is self-motivated and a good example to others.

School Spirit: Blake Dimauita Yr 8 Recently at the bus stop Blake found that a new student had missed his bus. This student was preparing to then walk home some considerable distance away through territory with which he was unfamiliar. Blake realising the seriousness of the situation advised the teacher on duty who was then able to have the student safely transported home. Blake’s alertness and care for a fellow student is to be commended. His actions reflect concern, thoughtfulness and consideration of others, which exemplify school spirit.

Our senior debating teams had their first debate and the news from Mrs Ruddy was all good!

Please congratulate John Paul Gonzo, Tim McErlane, Rhuaidi Burke and Hannah Grundy for not only preparing their case for the debate, but for also giving numerous hours mentoring our other ‘less experienced' debaters - Chau Le, Emily George, Cory Parker, Ryan Rosenberger, Kathryn Ryder, Hannah Farr, Xiena Bevan and Ruwan Joseph - all of these students spoke with confidence and put forward strong, intelligent arguments and rebuttal, for many it was their first time even attending a debate, let alone competing! They showed lots of Columban's spirit! Well done to our debaters. All 3 teams won so a big congratulations to them all and well done to Mrs Ruddy.

In the First XI match, early rain threatened to delay the start but thanks to quick work from groundsman Wade Schimke, play was possible. St Paul’s won the toss and sent us in to bat. Taking advantage of the early moisture, opposition took early wickets and StC stumbled to be all out for only 65. Justin Thompson (16) and Casimero Gardner (15) were the best of the batsmen. St Paul’s were able to reach the target for the loss of only three wickets. Michael Morgan took 2/14 off 6 overs and was supported in the field by Mitch De Rossi and Jayden Henderson who took great catches. Thanks also go to Sam Treasure who filled in as a substitute fielder.

In the 2nd XI match, St Paul’s 1/33 defeated StC 32. The Year 8 team was also defeated with St Pauls scoring the required 43 runs for the loss of only three wickets.

On a more positive note, The Year 10 team achieved a famous victory scoring 7/110 to rein in the St Paul’s score of 107. Damien Thompson celebrated his return to school cricket taking 5/26 and scoring 27 runs not out. He was supported by Caleb Foote (28), Gerald Ubaldo (12) and Chris Dougherty who took 2/4 off 3 overs. Master coach, Damien Harvey was quite pleased with the result.

The play of the day however, must go to Joe Small who guided the Year 9 team (with only 7 players) to an emphatic win. Joe was unbeaten on 151 runs at the end of the 30 overs. He was well supported by Jarnu Grobbelaar (71 n.o.) and Lachie Glew (19) as StC 1/265 defeated St Pauls 7/60. Nathan Manning took 3/9 off 4 overs, Mitch Kellogg took 2/8 off 5 overs and Mitch Lugg kept things tight conceding only 12 runs in his 4 overs. Thanks to the parents of the Year 9 team for assisting with the set up to make the game possible.

Year 8 StC v Cannon Hill Anglican College: 1-2 The Year 8 boys continue to develop their skills and tactical game play as they compete against more experienced teams each week. Again, they led on points in two of the three sets against Cannon Hill, making their opposition work hard for every point. It was rewarding to see how they determined were, to take out the third set – a commendable reflection of the StC school spirit. Well done team!

Rugby League After a brilliant start to the Tournament Cory Parker (Yr 12) and his Team were eager to get back out on the pitch and show what they could do. Last weekend Cory and his team were able to get out in front of a home crowd at Stockland Stadium Kawana and show off their talent defeating the 34 – 16. Cory again proved pivotal to the success of the team being central to many of the key plays and scoring a try himself. This win has the Falcons in equal 1st position alongside the Townsville Stingrays with Cory himself 2nd for the overall tries scored in the competition, a position he is hoping to improve on. He won’t need to wait long either as this weekend the team heads to Toowoomba to take on the Clydesdales who are coming off a loss from the Townsville Stingrays. Cory and his team are wise enough not to underestimate the Toowoomba boys and are looking forward to the opportunity for another hit out and an indication of what they might be up against come round five when they take on their top of the table rivals, Townsville. We wish Cory and his team all the best for the weekend and fingers crossed for some more tries.

“I have come that they may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10) This is the theme for Project Compassion in 2014. This is the main fundraiser for Caritas Australia for the Year and the proceeds help fund projects all around the globe.

St Columban’s is getting on board with a fundraising aim of $3000. It may sound like a lot of money however all it will take is $3 per student to reach this goal.

Each PC group has a donation box which will be collected weekly and tallied up. The PC group that raises the most money will be treated to lunch in the first week of term 2 as a thank you for their effort.

For more information on Project Compassion please see the Caritas website (www.caritas.org.au). Many thanks for your support!

MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING PROGRAM Australian Mobile Recycling was founded in September 2011. Their aim is to collect as many used and unwanted mobile phones as possible. All mobile phones will be recycled for reuse, which means they will be refurbished for resale. Handsets are restored to factory conditions and all Sim card and memory cards are destroyed.

Any phones that are beyond repair will be broken down into their constituent parts and recycled by Australian licensed recyclers.

For our recycling efforts our school will receive $3 for every mobile phone returned. Your contribution will not only raise money for our school community but also help the environment in a positive way by reducing waste. BRING IN YOUR OLD MOBILE PHONES and place in the box at the school office student counter.
