The LC50 values of Thymus vulgaris, Ruta graveolens, Citrus aurantium, Leptospermum petersonii and Achillea millefolium oils were recorded as 57.48, 84.44, 92.58, 113.26 and 125.78 mg/L, respectively, against P. shantungensis nymphs using the leaf dipping bioassay, and 75.80, 109.86, 113.26, 145.06 and 153.74 mg/L, respectively, against P. shantungensis adults using the spray bioassay method. Regarding volatile components identified inT . vulgaris oil, the LC50 values of carvacrol and thymol using the leaf dipping bioassay against P. shantungensis nymphs were 56.74 and 28.52 mg/L, respectively. The insecticidal action of T. vulgaris oil against P. shantungensis could be attributed to carvacrol and thymol. Based on the structure-toxicity relationship between thymol analogs and insecticidal toxicities against P. shantungensis nymphs similar to the LC50 values against P. shantungensis adults, the LC50 values of thymol, carvacrol, citral, 2-isopropylphenol, 3-isopropylphenol, and 4-isopropylphenol were 28.52, 56.74 and 89.12, 71.41, 82.49, and 111.28 mg/L, respectively. These results indicate that the insecticidal mode of action of thymol analogs may be largely attributed to the methyl functional group. -

During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. We developed a list of pests associated with beans (in any country) that occur in Jordan on any host based on scientific literature, previous commodity risk assessments, records of intercepted pests at ports-of-entry, and information from experts on bean production. This is a qualitative risk assessment, as we express estimates of risk in descriptive terms (High, Medium, and Low) rather than numerically in probabilities or frequencies. We identified seven quarantine pests likely to follow the pathway of introduction. We estimated Consequences of Introduction by assessing five elements that reflect the biology and ecology of the pests: climate-host interaction, host range, dispersal potential, economic impact, and environmental impact. We estimated Likelihood of Introduction values by considering both the quantity of the commodity imported annually and the potential for pest introduction and establishment. We summed the Consequences of Introduction and Likelihood of Introduction values to estimate overall Pest Risk Potentials, which describe risk in the absence of mitigation. -

Genus Athalia LEACH, 1817, Athalia himantopus-group (Insecta: Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae: Allantinae) Frank KOCH Abstract The Athalia himantopus-group of the sawfly family Tenthredinidae is revised, and a key is provided for the eight known Afrotropical species. The species of this group are characterised by the presence of a short and more or less truncate clypeus. Four species are re-described and four species are described as new to science, namely: Athalia erythraeana sp. n., A. flavobasalis sp. n., A. sidamoensis sp. n. and A. taitaensis sp. n. The subspecies A. himantopus truncata ENSLIN, 1914 and A. himantopus obsoleta BENSON, 1962, are interpreted as valid species - A. truncata ENSLIN stat. rev. and A. obsoleta BENSON stat. n. Athalia marginipennis Enderlein, 1920 sp. rev., which is distributed from East to southern Africa, is a valid species and is removed from synonymy with A. sjoestedti KONOW, 1907. The phenology of A. flavobasalis and A. marginipennis is discussed, based on material from a series of yellow pan trap samples collected from February 1981 to June 1983 at Munanira, Burundi. All species are figured, and their distribution and relationships are discussed. Introduction Following the revision of the endemic Afrotropical Athalia vollenhoveni species-group (KOCH 2006), this contribution deals with the A. himantopus species-group, and is a further contribution to a broader taxonomic- systematic revision of the Afrotropical Symphyta, especially the genus Athalia LEACH, 1817, the main purpose of which is to reconstruct the phylogeny and historical distribution patterns of the group. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT Human activities can have dramatic impacts on animal populations around urban areas with heavy metal contamination being a primary cause of hazardous effects. Insects as residents of ecosystems are especially susceptible to heavy metal contamination and have the potential to serve as indicators for environmental stresses .To better understand the effect of heavy metals pollution on terrestrial insect, the detection of different heavy metals was investigated. The following metals cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) were found and their concentrations were estimated in soil samples from either polluted or reference site. As the Cd concentration was significantly high in the polluted site, its concentration in the tissues of the studied insect Blaps polycresta (Coleoptera:Tenebrionidae), was investigated as well as the antioxidant defense system and lipid peroxidation biomarkers. -

Birkett2 & Éva Bálintné Csonka1 & Miklós Tóth1 Received: 24 November 2020 /Revised: 2 March 2021 /Accepted: 7 April 2021 / Published online: 19 April 2021 # The Author(s) 2021 Abstract The sex pheromone composition of alfalfa plant bugs, Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze), from Central Europe was investigated to test the hypothesis that insect species across a wide geographical area can vary in pheromone composition. Potential interactions between the pheromone and a known attractant, (E)-cinnamaldehyde, were also assessed. Coupled gas chromatography- electroantennography (GC-EAG) using male antennae and volatile extracts collected from females, previously shown to attract males in field experiments, revealed the presence of three physiologically active compounds. These were identified by coupled GC/ mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and peak enhancement as hexyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate and (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal. A ternary blend of these compounds in a 5.4:9.0:1.0 ratio attracted male A. lineolatus in field trials in Hungary. Omission of either (E)-2- hexenyl-butyrate or (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal from the ternary blend or substitution of (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal by (E)-2-hexenal resulted in loss of activity. These results indicate that this Central European population is similar in pheromone composition to that previously reported for an East Asian population.
