Community Profile Over the years, Williamsburg has evolved from its industrial roots, and is now home to a large community of professionals, artists, musicians, and others who enjoy the close proximity to Manhattan and the homey feeling of Brooklyn that this neighborhood has to offer. The historic Williamsburg Bridge connects Williamsburg to Manhattan’s burgeoning Lower East Side, and the thriving East Village is just one subway stop away on the L train. Williamsburg is well-known for its rich history — it is home to the original Peter Luger’s Steakhouse, a favorite among New Yorkers since 1887, and to the world-famous Brooklyn Brewery, established in 1987. Williamsburg is also known for its contemporary style, with trendsetting shops like American Apparel and Brooklyn Industries’ flagship store. And Williamsburg contin- ues to attract lively and diverse residents with its multitude of restaurants, boutiques, galleries, bars, and nightclubs. Live music and performance art are a big part of the scene in Williamsburg. Offering an abundance of culture and breathtaking views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline, Williamsburg is one of New York City’s most desirable neighborhoods restaurants Acqua Santa Brick • And Steak-Cut Tomatoes
    - Advertisement - Foodservice Forum: In New York, iconic eatery draws them in with steak -- and steak-cut tomatoes July 2, 2008 NEW YORK -- If you've been to New York and missed eating at Peter Luger Steak House, get your carnivore appetite back here. The Brooklyn location (a second restaurant on Long Island in Great Neck opened in 1960) has been dishing out the finest USDA Prime steaks since 1887. It was originally established as Carl Luger's Caf?, Billiards & Bowling Alley in the predominantly German neighborhood tucked under the Williamsburg Bridge. In 1950, the original owners put the restaurant up for auction. Sol Forman bought it for what was publicized in restaurant tabloids at the time for "a whimsically low bid." His granddaughter, Jody Storch, vice president, now has the job of buying the meat for the restaurant. The current owners are comprised of Forman family members including Amy Rubenstein, the wife of Howard Rubenstein, the legendary publicist whose clients have included George Steinbrenner, Rupert Murdoch and Donald Trump. And while we're name dropping, let's include members of Peter Luger's famous client list: James Cagney, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert De Niro, Rudolph Giuliani, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Nicolas Cage and Henry Kissinger. "But we're in this for everyone, not just celebrities," said Jody Storch. "We consider our restaurants sort of simple but good, and we appeal to people across every economical level. We're a local, community-minded restaurant that draws clients from everywhere in the world. What we are all about 1 / 4 is presenting a wonderful steak.

  • For Several Decades, Brooklyn Was a City That Looked Backward With
Fillmore Real Estate Brooklyn Decades ago, Brooklyn was a city that looked with nostalgia to the glory days of Coney Island, the Victorian Gold Coast, and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Some even gave up on their neighborhoods and moved away. But others―committed residents, nonprofit community development groups, artists, and a few hearty pioneers― refused to budge and stayed behind to rebuild. Their work was reinforced by innovative New York City policies, the Community Reinvestment Act, which encouraged bank lending, and housing tax credits, which encouraged new development. Then the private sector came along, liked what it saw, and the result has been one of the hottest real estate booms in the country. Brooklyn’s optimistic business community, elected officials, and local residents are a special breed. They believe in the potential of all people in the borough and continue to work to ensure that everyone benefits from its renaissance. They also recognize the strength of Brooklyn’s diversity and appreciate hardworking newcomers who unpack their dreams here as millions have done before them. As a result, Brooklyn today is a city that is looking forward, and there is much to look forward to. • The waterfront, vibrant until the 1950s when the rise of the interstate highway system robbed the maritime industry of its monopoly on moving goods, is being restored to its 19th Century glory as a destination for tourists, parks, housing, and even cruise lines; • Luxury condominiums are replacing vacant lots in formerly forlorn areas; • The City is changing
