First International Symposium on Danxia Landform

Invitation

We hereby sincerely invite you to attend the first international symposium on Danxia Landform, opening from May 26th to 28th, 2009 in Danxiashan Global Geopark in Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, the naming place of Danxia Landform.

Danxia landform, belonging to the red beds landform, is a special rock landform which is characterized by scarp slope and named by Chinese geologists. China has a research history of 80 years in Danxia landform and has already set up a relatively integrated discipline system. Red beds are widely distributed in China: from tropical zone to temperate zone, from humid area to arid area, from the coastal hills and plains to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and have developed Danxia landform of variety causes, forming a unique geographical landscape and beautiful scenery. The theme of the symposium is Scientific Development of Danxia Landform and its Resource Protection and Utilization. Related subjects as follows will be discussed during the symposium: theory and methods for red beds and Danxia landform study, protection of natural heritage of Danxia landform, natural disaster, artificial influence and resource and environment protection in red beds and Danxia landform areas, rational utilization of Danxia resources. The symposium will provide a great research and communicating opportunity for the scientists and management staffs who concern with the red beds and Danxia landform.

We promise that we will try our best to organize the symposium and arrange the field trips of the beautiful and typical sceneries of Danxia. We sincerely welcome all geologists and geomorphologists who are interested in this theme to take part in this symposium and inspection tour to the most beautiful scenic spots of Danxia landscape in China with your colleagues, friends, partners and families.

Join us in the most comfortable season of the year to visit Danxiashan, the most beautiful Danxia Landscape in China, and get together to explore this magical and special landform.

1. Background

In the 1920s and 1930s, the Chinese geologists Prof. Feng Jinglan and Prof. Chen Guoda named a special stratum as Danxia Bed and Danxia Landform which are represented by Mt. Danxiashan, Guangdong Province, China. After 80 years’ study, the term Danxia, which is similar to , widely accepted gradually .

Danxia belongs to the red beds landform featuring scarp slope in the category of the rocks landform, and is a landscape that developed in thick continental red beds. It can be defined as a sort of unique landscape featuring steep cliffs, deep canyons and towering peaks that are formed by the red beds uplifted and cut by faults, which may have been eroded mainly by flows and other external forces, such as , dissolution and gravity.

In 1991, the First National Seminar on Danxia Landform and Tourism Development was held in Mt. Danxiashan, and established the Danxia Landform and Tourism Development Research Society of China. Up to now, the Research Society has convened 11 national seminars, published 11 analects and more than 400 papers and aroused great interest in Danxia landform to the academia and society. During 2003 to 2008, Danxiashan, Taining and Longhushan were approved as Global Geoparks by UNESCO in the name of Danxia Landform Type. In 2006, the representative areas of Danxia landform in Guangdong, , , , and Province carried out a basic research of the China Danxia serial nomination of the world natural heritage. In the process of nomination for the Global Geopark and World Heritage, some experts from IUGS, IAG and IUCN were interested in these researches and participated in relevant investigations. It shows that it is the good time to hold an international symposium on Danxia Landform.

In order to promote the further development of Danxia landform researches, share the international research achievements, and promote the scientific conservation and sustainable utilization of Danxia natural heritages and resources, with the help of IUGS and IAG, the International Conference on China Danxia Landform will be held in Mt. Danxiashan, Guangdong Province, China from 26th to 28th, May, 2009 by Subcommittee of Geoscience and Geopark, Geological Society of China, Committee of Geomorphology and Quaternary of Geographical Society of China, Geography and Planning School of Sun Yat-sen University and Danxia Landform and Tourism Development Research Society of China.
