  • Diabolical Perspectives on Healthy Morality in Times of COVID-19
The current issue and full text archive of this journal is available on Emerald Insight at: https://www.emerald.com/insight/0368-492X.htm Diabolical Diabolical perspectives on healthy perspectives on morality in times of COVID-19 healthy morality Lars Clausen UCL University College, Odense, Denmark; Next Society Institute, Kazimiero Simonaviciaus universitetas, Vilnius, Lithuania and Europa-Universit€at Flensburg, Flensburg, Germany Received 23 February 2021 Revised 1 June 2021 Abstract Accepted 4 June 2021 Purpose – The paper combines the systems theoretical perspective on the evolution of societal differentiation and the emergence of codes in communication. By combining the approach by Niklas Luhmann with a historical theology on the development of Christian morality split between God and Devil, it recreates a sociological point of observation on contemporary moral forms by a temporary occupation of the retired Christian Devil. Design/methodology/approach – The article combines a Luhmannian systems theoretical perspective on the evolution of societal differentiation with a concept of emerging codes in communication. The latter is based on on the development of a Christian view of morality being split between God and Devil. It establishes a sociological point of observation on contemporary moral forms through the temporary invocation of the retired figure of the Christian Devil. Findings – The proposed perspective develops a healthy perspective on the exuberant distribution of a health(y) morality across the globe during the pandemic crisis of 2020–21. The temporary invocation of the retired Christian Devil as point of departure in this sociological analysis allows for a disturbing view on the unlimited growth of the morality of health and its inherent dangers of dedifferentiating the highly specialised forms of societal differentiation and organisation.

  • The Difference Between Risks and Dangers As Difference Between Self
Martin Voss 1 Disaster Research Unit, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel Institute of Sociology Kiel, Germany Towards a reopening of risk societies – a contribution to the debate on risk and danger. The distinction between risks and dangers as distinction of imputation of possible harm to oneself or others can be explained solely from a historical objectivistic and just less then 370 years old understanding of “nature”. In retrospect and in contrary to what was asserted again and again, it appears that in the pre-medieval times, the causes of harm were not attributed to “external” causes in the sense, that the individual and the group deprived themselves of responsibility. Rather, the reference to a divine principle connoted the systematic responsibility, individual and collective. Only against the backdrop of the extensive objectifying of the cognitive world is it possible not to ascribe eventual causes of harm to one’s own responsibility. The “autopoietic shutdown” of the “risk society” against its environment is based on this reification. In our days, this shutdown comes with “side effects” and ends up eroding the naturalistic system of concepts. This leads to a broad experience of contingency, which is often interpreted in the literature as return of the uncertainty. But there has never been such uncertainty in world’s history before. Rather, the modernity is challenged by a unique historical form of uncertainty that results from the objectifying of the cognitive world. This uncertainty can only be encountered through the consequent overcoming of the determinist-scientific understandings. Yet, the distinction between risk and danger reproduces extensively this naturalism.

  • Contemporary Political and Economic Regionalism
1 Course ID Number:ADC5365 Course Title: Contemporary Political and Economic Regionalism No. of Credits: 2 Graduate School of International Relations International University of Japan Term: Spring 2013 2 Course Title: Contemporary Political and Economic Regionalism Instructor: Harald Kleinschmidt Email: [email protected] Tel: +81-29-853-6778 Fax.: +81-29-853-7440 Syllabus Contents: The rising tide of regionalism has been a striking feature in international relations during the 1990s and the early years of the twenty-first century. Initially, most analysts regarded regionalism as a European phenomenon, modeled upon the institutions established in postwar Europe, then merged into the current European Union and successively, though unsuccessfully, applied in the so-called developing countries of Latin America and Africa. Since the end of the Cold War, however, regionalism has become more diversified, and the European model has mostly been rejected as inapplicable. Instead, new variants of regionalism have emerged, both in conceptual terms as well as in political practice, most dramatically in Southeast Asia but, to some extent, also in Latin America and parts of Africa. ‘New regionalism’ has become a serious rival and better appreciated 3 strategic and conceptual alternative to globalization. Even more recently, China’s inclusion into the World Trade Organization has boosted expectations that regionalism will also take roots in East Asia, where the Chinese government has launched a series of provocative initiatives to advance prospects of economic cooperation, political strategies of conflict resolution and patterns of cultural communication within processes of the formation of transnational civil society. The course aims at allowing students to develop and sharpen their own views about past and ongoing processes of regional integration and regional cooperation.

The history of accounting challenges an important structural argument in Niklas Luhmanns theory of the advent of our contemporary functionally differentiated society.
