Focus of Facility: The inpatient bedded service is commissioned within to provide short-term (typically 8-12 weeks) post-acute rehabilitation. due to non-progressive conditions. Within the regional trauma network, the REBUILD Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre offers in-patient cognitive-behavioural / functional rehabilitation to individuals who have a greater level of independence (typically more independently mobile and less physically dependent) than those served by the regional trauma centre. It can provide both a ‘step down’ from acute hospitals, and provide re- access to rehabilitation from community settings, when required. The service has a vision to be a leading organisation in the provision of rehabilitation services, focussing on aspects of both short-term recovery and longer-term wellbeing. REBUILD has a commitment to making Service User and Carer involvement at the heart of its approach to planning, delivering and evaluating services. Costs (per week): This is an NHS facility, so access is free to service users within the boundaries of , Sefton, St Helens, Knowsley & Halton. Spot-purchased services may be available to individuals outside of these boundaries on application. Clientele: REBUILD Brain Injuries Rehabilitation Centre delivers rehabilitation to adults (18 or over) affected by non-progressive, moderate – severe brain injury and living within the Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helen's or Halton areas of Merseyside. The Unit is able to admit those who are 'medically stable', not requiring active medical management. It can offer rehabilitation to those requiring input which may include Psychology / Psychiatry, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or Speech & Language Therapy. The service links closely with local community services for all of the above disciplines, and will attempt to 'signpost' service users to a more suitable service if required. Location: The Unit is located within the suburban Mossley Hill NHS Hospital Site, near to in South Liverpool, with easy access to regional motorways. Family Accommodation: The Unit is unable to offer overnight accommodation for family members. Families are welcome to visit throughout the evenings, with facilities are available to facilitate such visits, including a ‘family room’ with toys and games for children. Staff are happy to hear and facilitate special requests to support visits. Subject to care plans, the Unit encourages weekend leave for service users, in preparation for discharge to home. Staffing: The rehabilitation programme is led jointly by a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist and by a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist, who provide full-time support to the programme. The Unit has sessional input from a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, and on-site input from a specialist Neuro- physiotherapist, specialist Speech & Language therapist(s), specialist Occupational Therapist(s) and trained mental health nurses (RMN). Staff have access to specialist training and/or have experience in working with adults with neurological injuries. Sessional input is also offered on a weekly basis from personal trainers around physical exercise and weekly sessions of hydrotherapy/swimming are provided in a local swimming pool. Service User Involvement: REBUILD Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, as part of Mersey Care NHS Trust’s wider commitment, has an active service user and carer team, who are involved in many aspects of service design, delivery and evaluation. The Unit has a team of former service users and carers who currently volunteer and/or do paid work within the service as befrienders on the unit, as activity co-ordinators, helping to run educational groups, undertaking research and service evaluation, or as part of the service development group. The service encourages service users to learn and gain support from other individuals who have been through the process of rehabilitation and works to enable service users and carers to support each other in the longer-term after discharge. Rehabilitation Schedules, Social Activities, and Activities of Daily Living: The rehabilitation programme is typically offered during working hours, 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, to promote a ‘usual’ pattern of working life, in preparation for people to return home. An individualised weekly rehabilitation timetable is provided for each service user. Further leisure opportunities may be available during the evening and at weekends, both on the unit and in the local community- dependant on an individual’s preferences. Current regular activities include visits from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Musicians, fitness groups run by ‘Pro-fit’ personal trainers, and an ‘about brain injury’ education and support group. The REBUILD unit also offers a number of ‘themed’ activities run by volunteers, (e.g. Halloween, Christmas, events like the Diamond Jubilee) involving themed food, music and quizzes. Clothing and Laundry: Since the Unit encourages home leave during ‘quiet times’ at weekends, many service users choose to do their washing at home and bring clean washing when they return to the unit. However, as part of the rehabilitation programme / for service users who remain on the unit at weekends there is an on- site laundry available, which service users can utilise free of charge. All bedding, towels, etc. are provided. Mealtimes, Diet and Choice: All meals are provided, with choices available. Vegetarian, vegan or culturally-sensitive meals (e.g. Halal, Kosher) can be provided as necessary. Similarly, modified diets for individuals with swallowing problems are available and provided as needed. Subject to care plans, the Occupational Therapist and the nursing staff may support and encourage service users to buy food and cook for themselves, their family or others on the REBUILD unit, both for its social aspects and in preparation for returning home. Bedrooms: Each service user is provided with their own room, with en-suite shower facilities. Each room has a TV/DVD player and service users are welcome to spend ‘down time’ or have family visits in their room. Service users and families are also encouraged to bring items from home (e.g. posters, family photos) with which to personalise their rooms and make it feel more like ‘home from home’. Access: The Unit is fully accessible to individuals with restricted mobility, such as wheelchair users. It is located on the ground floor, with wide corridor access. The Unit has a number of wheelchair user- friendly rooms and assisted bathroom facilities. GP / Medical Cover: The Unit has a full-time Consultant Neuropsychiatrist based on-site, as well as out-of-hours psychiatric and GP cover. A local GP provides weekly sessions to service users, Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine from The Walton Centre NHS Trust visit regularly. Where required, the REBUILD service has links with the local acute hospitals and neurology based in The Walton Centre NHS Trust, to provide service users with timely access to medical support. Staff Training: The REBUILD Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre has been in existence since 1994. Many staff have remained in post since its foundation. For this reason, the service’s staff are highly trained in brain injury rehabilitation. The Unit has a commitment to ongoing training of its staff, to include in-service training specific to brain injury working, as well as comprehensive mandatory training on all aspects of care and support. Fire Safety and Evacuation Planning: Mersey Care NHS Trust is fully compliant with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, 2006 and, as such, REBUILD Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre has a clear fire safety risk assessment and monitoring plan. The Unit has a regularly checked and serviced fire alarm system, connected with to the local fire service, providing warnings about fire hazards both on the unit and across the broader hospital site. There is a clearly displayed fire evacuation plan for the building, and trained fire marshals who will act in the event of a fire. All staff are trained regularly in fire safety procedures. Where individual service users have particular difficulties that would put them at risk in the event of a fire (e.g. mobility issues), individual fire evacuation plans are developed with the service user and their staff team.

Management Team: The service is part of a wider management team in the REBUILD Business Unit of Mersey Care NHS Trust. It is therefore managed within the Trust and CBU structures. Within the service, clinical and managerial leadership are provided by the Lead Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, the Consultant Neuropsychiatrist and by the Therapies and Nursing team Manager. Service User Contact Details: Mersey Care NHS Trust maintains a secure electronic patient record system of service user, family and advocate details. It is a key performance indicator of the service to ensure that complete and accurate information relating to the service user and their family is collected and properly maintained. Transport: The REBUILD service is situated close to all of the major regional motorways (M62, M57) and is situated within walking distance of Mossley Hill train station, on the Liverpool Lime Street line. Within the service, REBUILD has a dedicated and adapted minibus, which can be used to help service users access local community activities
