Instrumento para establecer el Estado de Israel, defender sus fronteras, crear su agricultura e industria y establecer sus normas sociales, el kibutz es la única comuna en la historia que ha jugado un papel central en la vida de una nación. Sin embargo, a lo largo de los años, Israel se ha convertido de una comunidad pionera idealista en una sociedad materialista de libre mercado. En consecuencia, el kibutz ha sido marginado y está experimentando una transformación radical. La ética igualitaria expresada en la frase "De cada uno según su capacidad, a cada cual según su necesidad" está siendo reemplazada por el concepto de recompensa por el esfuerzo. No conozco ningún libro que lo iguale como estudio del movimiento kibutz. Pasé un mes en Israel hace algunos años, parte del tiempo en el Kibutz Kinneret; leer el libro de Gavron centró mis recuerdos. Por lo tanto, puedo hacer algunas observaciones por mi cuenta sobre el movimiento del kibutz, al menos lo suficiente para despertar tu mente para lo que sigue. He was only 22 years old when he died. Zorick was the son of Dvora and Shmuel Dayan and the younger brother of Aviva and Moshe. He grew up and matured in the home of his parents in Nahalal. He was an alert and lively child who loved to read, was sensitive, and had a wonderful sense of humor. His youth was full of activity and although he was not overly interested in school, he was a very good student. He worked hard on his parents’ farm but also had an active social life. He was a central figure among the youth of his age in the local school, but at the same time there were periods when he enjoyed being alone. He also participated in defense of the Moshav, as did the other youths of the Moshav as was then customary. But even as a youth, distant lands interested him. When he was only 16 years old, he and his friend Micha ben Barak stole into the car of a freight train and ended up in Ismailia, Egypt. He wanted to visit his sister Aviva who was then serving in the A.T.S.

In 1917, Jews comprised 10% of Palestine’s population; by 1947, their share of the population rose to 30%, almost entirely due to immigration from Europe. The Zionist Organization was aware of this trend and articulated its political demands in accordance with not only the current number of Jews living in Palestine, but also statistical projections of the number of Jews who would enter the country in the future. I argue that from a demographic-political point of view, the Mandate years should be divided into two periods. Between 1917 and 1937, the Zionist leadership successfully prevented the establishment of majoritarian self-governing institutions, and espoused the principle of mutual non-domination, which dictated that Jews would not rule over Arabs and vice versa. In practice, the Zionists advocated the creation of two separate autonomous national communities under British federal rule, or complete parity between Jews and Arabs in Palestine’s self-governing institutions. Although the British and the Arabs rejected both proposals, the Zionist leadership was able to prevent the creation of a joint political structure in which the Arabs would enjoy a clear majority.

The main consideration behind the support of most Upper Galilee kibbutzim for the establishment of Kiryat Shmona was the urgent need for laborers to help dominate the new extensive areas belong- ing to Arab villages in the Hula Valley. The completion of the draining of the Hula swamp a decade later likewise left tens of thousands of dunams available for cultivation and an urgent need for workers. The massive growth of the town, including eight thousand new immi- grants from North Africa in the late 1950s, despite the socio-economic vacuum and the absence of economic infrastructure, suited the needs of the Regional Council. The dearth of opportunities in Kiryat Shmona caused heavy reliance on unstable seasonal agricultural work in the surrounding kibbutzim and public works that advanced mainly kibbutz infrastructures. Not only after the fact but even during the establishment of Kiryat Shmona and its development from a ma’abara into a town, there were clear warn- ings as to the social consequences of the growing gaps.
