A Creative Reteat The Carroll House The Carroll House is dedicated to creativity, ideas, expression, and the completion of creative projects. The retreat welcomes adult artists and writers from a broad range of disciplines and countries. Fellows will have autonomy in private suites, participate in artistic exchanges with other residents, and interact with enthusiasts, supporters, and experts. Residency sessions range from 14-30 days. Fellows are identiEied through our partnerships with artistic, literary, cultural, civic and government entities. The retreat is located in Southwest Atlanta (approximately 10 miles from downtown) and offers proximity to Atlanta landmarks such as the Woodruff Arts Center, the High Museum, MOCA Georgia, the Decatur Book Festival, The King Center, Jimmy Carter Center, the Atlanta History Center, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, SCAD, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Emory University, Georgia State University, and much more. The Carroll House is funded by the Joe Barry Carroll Foundation. The Program • Inaugural programs are scheduled for 2016 • Applicants must be artists or writers with a concept or project they can conclude during residency • Applicants must be 1) referred by a recognized cultural, literary, artistic, educational or government entity, 2) complete an application and 3) pay a $25 application fee • Residencies are awarded by The Carroll House Selection Committee • Minimum age is 21 at the time of residency • Length of residency session ranges from 14-30 days. • Funding for lodging is provided by a grant from the Joe Barry Carroll Foundation, therefore there is no charge for Fellows during their residency session • Each Resident Fellow is assigned a single suite • Participate in discussions with other Resident Fellows at the house is required • Attend at the closing reception at the end of residency is required • Fellows must be responsible for individual travel and transportation, equipment and materials, and individual meals and beverages Additional details are available on the application The Property The Carroll House is a scenic, 50-acre, gated property with a Eive-acre pond, nature trails, and indigenous wild life. The residence contains 6 bedrooms, 6-1/2 bathrooms, a laundry room, dining room, kitchen, and spacious common area. Joe Barry Carroll | Bio The Carroll House was founded by former NBA All Star Joe Barry Carroll who converted the property into a creative retreat as a way to further his support of art and literature. Carroll is a wealth advisor, artist and the author of “Growing Up … In Words and Images,” a memoir coffee table book that includes seventy of his paintings. Carroll was born the tenth of thirteen children in Pine Bluff, Arkansas and spent his teen years in Denver, Colorado. He was recruited to play basketball for Purdue University and led the Boilermakers to the Final Four, became an NCAA All-American First Team, and earned a degree in Economics. He was the No 1 overall National Basketball Association Draft pick by the Golden State Warriors. During his Eirst season Carroll was selected NBA All- Rookie First Team Center and over the next seven seasons with Golden State he averaged more than twenty points per game and was a member of the NBA All Star Team, Western Conference (1987). Carroll also played for Milano (Italy), the Houston Rockets, New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets, and Phoenix Suns. His NBA career totals include 12,455 points, a career high average of 24 points, 5,404 rebounds, 1,264 assists and 1,122 blocked shots. He established the BroadView Foundation, at the age of twenty to inancially support and participate in organizations and programs that serve lower socio- economic groups and individuals in communities of color and later founded the Joe Barry Carroll Foundation. In 2014 the Atlanta Braves and the Center for Civil and Human Rights honored Carroll with the “Hank Aaron Champion for Justice Award” in recognition of his ongoing philanthropy. He is a member of the Retired NBA Players Association and is a board member of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA).
