RE: Discipleship Groups

DATE: 27 - Nov-89

Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of a faculty/staff-student discipleship group. We tried our best to match all the students with leaders, but the schedules of some students just wouldn't fit in with those of the faculty and staff, and you happen to be such a student.

However, you may have a chance to get in on a discipleship group if there's any way you can open up your schedule to include a time that a faculty or staff member would be available. The most popular time for faculty and staff is Tuesday during chapel period, so we can pretty much guarantee you a spot if that time is available to you.

Please check any of the following available meeting times, and we'll try to get you matched up:

RE: Discipleship Group Meetings

DATE: 25 January 1990

When I sent out your group packets last semester, I don't believe that I was very clear about the procedures for getting the discipleship groups started. If you have any questions regarding the intentions I had, please do contact me as soon as possible.

I want to say thanks to those of you who have made efforts to get your meetings started and to encourage the rest of you to contact your students as quickly as possible before the semester gets away. You may choose to use the memos I prepared (with the addition of a starting date and location>, or you may let your students know about the meeting in whatever way you wish.

Thanks again for your commitment to us students and for the work that will have such a lasting impact in our lives. FROMa Ken Daniels, VP of Campus Ministries

RE: Discipleship Groups

DATE: 27-Nov-89

Thank you for indicating your interest in leading a discipleship group. The last few of the discipleship questionnaires have recently trickled in, and although we haven't been able to match up all the students with leaders, we want to give the groups that have been matched a chance to get started at your convenience.

Due to some scheduling difficulties, the first criterion used in determining group composition was available meeting time, so some of the other cr.lteria were not considered. We are enclosing the student questionnaire returns so that you can get an idea of what the students in your group would like to focus on.

We have prepared memos for you to send to the students in your group, and you may distribute them through campus mail wh enever you would like to start the meetings. You will need to indicate the date of the first meeting and your preferred meeting location on each memo. l::, RC>PC>~.3 AL.

Three year :, ago. the c.1dm1n1slr ,:1t1011 recognized ,1 need tl,at was forming concerning a signif ic~nt percentdge of the student body. The administration realized that they had needs t hat were unique from most other students. The need was twofold: 1) for an official group to represent t hese students in conununication to the administration. a nd , 2) for this group to minister to those needs. Out of those initial talks. and for those purposes, the Married Student Organization was formed.

The students who are also married~ under a different set of circumstances than single students. Some of these differences are: --a marriage commitment demands a lot of time and energy; --the commitment of time and energy grows larger for those with chi ldren; --most of the married students are older, and need a few different activities with a different emphasis than activities designed for single students .

Therefore. in consideration of the unique needs of the married student population . we request that the executive committee and the representatives in the student senate adopt this modest proposal.

Proposa l

The ma1Tied student b o dy proposes that IF the floor funds are 11ot cont i m1ed . an amount of $400 per semester be a 11 o ca ted to the married student ~ for the purpose of at least one activity per seme s ter.

This amount is approximately equival ent to the amount provided by the floor fund from l ast seme ster. Note also that if the pr ( 1 posed budget i s passed as it current ly stands. the rn,:irr· jed students will have no financial means of meeting their own unique neP,ds. We requesl that the ::::t ude nt l eadership follow the lead of the administration in recognizing the different needs of a significant portion of the student body: the married students.

WALKATHON

JANUARY 27 - 9:30 A.M.

AT

PINE TREE FOOTBALL STADIUM

When 1989 began, Al Edwards and Bryan Quinn had little in common. Bryan was awaiting high school graduation, and Al was busy with his thriving insurance company. But the two now share almost identical lives and experiences.

, They are living the horror that is leukemia, and both are searching for a bone marrow donor - their link to life. Without a transplant, they have only a 15 per cent chance of survival.

; · You can help! On Saturday, ·January 27, a WALKATHON is being held at the Pine Tree Foot ball Stadium. If weather becomes a problem. the Walk will be held at Mobberly Baptist Church on Loop 281. You can walk with or without a sponsor.

All proceeds from the Walkathon will be used to offset the tremendously expensive search for a donor, which is not covered by insurance. ·

On a national level, you can help by being tested as a possible bone marrow donor. Although there is only a one in 20,000 chance that you will match Bryan or Al, you could be their an§wec. Ste wart Blood Center will be on location to check up to fifty-five individuals at the Walk from 9:30 - 3:00 P.M. Medical Pathology Lab will also be on hand to help with tissue typing. You must be between the ages of 18 - 55 to be considered. The contribution for the tissue typing blood test is $35. You can also sponsor someone who cannot afford the tissue typing but is willing to be a donor.

Please join us in this effort with your love, financial support and prayers.

Contributions can be made as follows: QUINN-EDWARDS TRUST FUND Longview Bank & Trust 300 E. Whaley, Box 3188 Longview, Texas 75606 Attn: G. Manns

Donations can also be made to Life-Link at the above location. STUDENT ACTIVITIES EVALUATION FORM

RE: Operation Cleansweep

Preparations for Operation Cleansweep are quickly getting underway, but we need your help if we're going to pull the whole thing off before April 21 rolls around. In the last RA meeting I passed around a sign-up sheet for those of you who were interested in having us visit your living areas during the week after spring break. Somehow that sheet didn't get back to me, so we'll need you to sign up again and give us a little more information while you're at it.

If you would like for us to show the video that we showed in the RA meeting, then we'll need you to line up a VCR and TV for us to play it on. It would be good if you could indicate ahead of time whether you'll be able to do that. Otherwise, we'll skip the video when we visit you and just have a normal informational meeting.

After we come to visit your living area with the Cleansweep information, we would like for you to come up with a leader for your team. The leader should have some experience in carpentry or building, but don't sweat it if no one qualifies. We may end up doing some mixing and matching between living areas.

Please fill out the form below and send it back to Ken Daniels, CPO 705. Thanks a bunch.

Things are happening on this campus! Over 200 students, faculty, and staff have signed up for Operation Cleansweep. On Satu rday, April 21, we plan to renovate between nine and eleven houses in one of the most underprivileged areas in town. The local news stations have sensed our enthusiasm, and they already have plans to gain footage of this event.

TEAM ASSIGNMENTS. Enclosed is a list of all the groups that have applied to date. The first name in each list will be the team leader. Please search through the list to find which team you're in. If you wish to join Operation Cleansweep or to be in a group other than the one you're assigned to, then please contact Ken Daniels (236-1765, CPO 705) or Greg Tucker (236- 1855, CPO 475), and we'll try to answer your request .

TASKS. In the next few days we'll be establishing which houses you'll be working on , so at that time we'll let your team leaders know what you'll be doing. Check with your leader if you'd like more details.

DROPPING OU T. If it turns out that you can't make it to the event, then please try to get a replacement for yourself. If you can't get a replacement, then contact Ken Daniels or Greg Tucker to let us know as soon as possible. (Don't panic: the air show is on Sunday.) It will throw a wrench in the whole operation if people who signed up don't show up without letting us know.

GETTI NG THERE. The event is scheduled to begin at 8:30, when we plan to leave from the dining hall parking lot. You will need t o f urnish your own transportation, so check with your leader to find out where your house is before you leave. Most of the houses wil l be close together, so we'll all be one big, happy family.

LUNCHES. Work should last well into the afternoon, depending on how quickly we can do the job. If you are a boarding student, you will receive free sack lunches; otherwise, you may purchase a lunch from Marriot for $2.00 or bring your own.

LEADERS. We'll be keeping up with you about your responsi bilities as the day draws closer. Leading shouldn't require too muc h effort i f you have a pumped-up team.

Thank you so much for your interest. Pray that we'll have good weather, that this effort will have a lasting impact in our community and in our own lives, and that all the details will come together smoothly. Dear Faculty or Staff Member:

On behalf of Student Ministries, I would like to thank those o[ you wh o have contributed in some way to the ca use of st udcn t miss ionf;. There a re several "miss ions" projects coming up in the near future for which we would greatly appreciate your continued help.

We are looking to April 21 as the day for LeTourneau involvement in Operation Cleansweep , a program which will allow us to repair a number of run-down houses in the community. Our goal is to recruit ten teams o f twenty Faith brings students and faculty to work on a total of ten houses. us together. Ingenuity sets The Operation Cleansweep organization itself has pledged to us apart. raise the money necessary for the work, but we are expected to prov ide all of the carpentry hardware. If you have Skil Saws (or equivalent), hammers , or any other useful carpentry tools, it would be a great help if you could lend them to us for t he day.

Apart Crom this community missions opportunity, there are a number of: students who are interested in going o n foreign mission trips this summer. This year we plan to hold another pie auction during the evening meal of Thursday, April 5, to raise money for them, but we would also like to include a number of products and services other than pies. That's where we see you fitting in. The products and services you might provide are up to your imagination: pies, laundry service, cookies, cakes, meals at your house (from one or two people to a whole living area ), shoe shines, etc.

Thank you for your help and for your interest in the lives of us as students. Below is a sign-up tab that you can fill out and return to Ken Daniels, CPO 705.

Project Mobilize wants to help!

History tells us that movements of corporate prayer, revival, and missions ' mobilization within the Church have begun with the prayer and action of students fully committed to Christ's cause. Psychology and missiology tell us that people are most effectively reached by their peers. Project Mobilize, staffed entirely by students, seeks to combine these two elements by laying the foundation for a movement of today's collegians. With firmly established molds of prayer, the two ~11imary elements of Project Mobilize's foundation would be an annual regional missions conference and traveling teams. Both would be directed by, and staffed with, committed college students from the South Central United States. These students would not, in any way, be asked to break ties with any campus fellowship that they may be associated with. On the contrary, they would be encouraged to work for the cooperation of the two. Would you like to get involved?

RE: A Do - Or-Die Fundraising Opportunity

Most of you should have received some information on the fundraiser that's coming up on March 31. Along with the materials was a pledge-sheet for that event , and I just want to encourage you to get as many pledges as possible, because EVERY PENNY THAT YOU RAISE FROM THIS EVENT WILL GO DIRECTLY TO YOUR OWN SUMMER MISSIONS EXPENSES. Which also means that EVERY PENNY THAT YOU FAIL TO RAISE FROM THIS EVENT WILL NOT GO TO YOUR SUMMER MISSIONS EXPENSES.

Please contact churches, friends, and businesses to pledge for you, and get other friends to join in with you to pick up bags to be credited to your own bag count. Some of us are planning to make a trip to businesses in the area to get pledges, and we want you to feel free to join us this coming Tuesday at 3:45 P.M. We'll be leaving from the Tyler Lounge area.

RE: Continuation of a Do-or - Die Fundraiaing Opportunity

DATE: 3-APR-90

I want to thank those of you who participated in the Trash-athon this past Saturday. We collected 47 bags of trash, even though only seven participants showed up, three of whom were perspective missionaries.

This coming Saturday we are planning to repeat this event for those who couldn't make it the last time. After it's all over, we'll count up the total number of bags and use that as the final count for all the pledges. In other words, if you get a pledge for $0.25 a bag, you will get $25 from that pledge if we end up collecting a total of 100 begs. Please continue to fill up your pledge sheet with that in mind.

Please do me the favor of letting me know if you CANNOT participate in the effort. We want to help out financially as much as we can. The summer missions financial aid program can function only if everyone helpsll If you don't either help with this event or contact me saying otherwise, we'll have to assume that you really aren't interested in any aid from the University.

Also, I would like to remind you to turn in your applications for financial aid to Mr. Harding as soon as possible if you have not already done so. If you have any questions with regard to your trip plans, please see him about that as well.

Thank you very much for your interest in summer missions, and may God bless you as you set out to see and serve the other side of the world.

P.S. If you have a vehicle, it would be it would be helpful if you could bring it along, since no vans are available this weekend. '- 1Er 1i-1F.···t-Jr_,L1t1 (e I t - - .H ,. (0: ------_____ UA. - u~~ ------FROM: Jim H~rd1ng

RE: Publicizing AIM ' 90

DATE: 9-Sep-89

We're really excited about the opportunities £or mission work in Mexico this coming spring break, and we'd like you all to have the chance to get the word out about AIM '90.

Probably the easiest way to publicize the missions trips would be just to distribute the brochures through CPO's, but that doesn't seem quite as personal as letting you guys go in pairs to £leer meetings throughout campus to get the word out.

I£ you'd like to get invovled in this way, then I hope you'll be at the small dining room on Wednesday the 13th at 12:15 to discuss just how we're going to go about doing this. See you there! FROM: Ken Daniels, VP of Campus Ministries

RE: AIM '90 Publicity

DATE: 25- Sep--8'3

As many of you know, we're getting ready to a Mexico chapel this coming Friday, September 2'3. I attended the AIM '89 post-excursion chapel last spring, and I thought you guys did a great job of singing those Spanish songs. In fact, you did so well that we'd like for you to do it again on Friday, but not without a little practice. That's why we're scheduling a short preparatory meeting in the assembly building Wednesday evening at 6:15. Please be there if it's at all possible, because we'd like many students to capture the same enthusiasm that you've had. The practice shouldn't last more than half an hour (in fact, it'll probably take 1 ess thar, that).

I want to thank those of you who have been distributing the brochures to different living areas, because I think this will be an effective way to get the word out about AIM '90. If you took a stack of brochures and signed up for one or more living areas, then I trust that you will have arranged some way (pick a way, any way) to get them out before Friday. Prob~bly the best way is to arrange for floor meetings with the RA's and to tell the students on the floor what AIM '90 is all about (to the best of your knowledge). However, if that doesn't suit your style, then feel free to pass out the brochures in whatever way you prefer.

We still need veteran AIM-ers to pass out brochures to the following floors, so please check one if you can and send this back quickly to CPO 705 (or contact me personally at 236-1765, TE-116) so that I can give you a good stack of brochures.

'1 In a few months I hope to be able to represent J esus Christ to Christians and non-Christians in Mexico. We're excited because, Lord willing, over Spring Break a group of us from LeTourneau Un iversity will be headed down to 3 or 4 different locations in Mexico for a brief missions trip. Those going to the city of Monterrey will be mostly involved in the construction of a new church, while the Aguascalientes group will spend their time in evangelism projects through drama, music, and puppets. Los Felix is another construction site, but in a much more rural setting. For all of the trips, the students will be living in the, homes of people from the church there. I feel that this is a fantastic way to use the time and energy God has given me. The main.battle, however, is spiritual, and no teal ~ternal difference is going to be made without prayer support. I' would really ask for your prayers, both for· myself, that the Lord would prepare me as a servant, and for those in Mexico with whom I will come in contact, that their hearts may be prepared even now, and that the Lord would use me in their lives for an eternal impact.

In order to be able to be part of this outreach, I am trusting God to meet my part of the expenses of this ministry. It will cost me $110 to go, so please be in prayer over this concern, too. If you feel that the Lord is leading you to financially support me in this, please make out your check to LeTourneau University, mailing it with the tear-off slip to the address shown below. You will receive a tax-deductible receipt within a few days .

CHANGING MONEY

It is recommended that su±ficient money be converted to pesos in order to last for several days. The treasurer should exchange 50¾ of the money. Each treasurer should carry a calculator.

CUSTOMS: ENTERING MEXICO

Each person needs 25 cents on the US side to cross the Rio Grande bridge. On the Mexican side, have the tourist cards ready to show the customs agents. Present international student visas separately from American ~ourist cards. If requested, make available any documents, luggage etc. for individual inspection. Vehicle drivers need to be ready to fill out vehicle registration forms. Try to work with only one customs agent while getting across. It is recommended to tip this individual if he does a good job getting everyone across smoothly ($10 - $20 US>.

40 KILOMETER CHECKPOINT

After leaving the city of Nuevo Laredo on the highway to Monterrey, there is an immigration checkpoint along the highway at the 40 kilometer point. At this checkpoint, vehicles are stopped and the drivers questioned about their travels in Mexico. Again, you should have all documents available for the agents. It is possible that luggage or people can be searched if the immigration officials desire. This checkpoint is a routine part of immigration into Mexico and should not present any alarm. Also expect to be stopped along the way by drug enforcement agents and gun control authorities.

CUSTOMS: ENTERING USA

At the 40 kilometer checkpoint, turn in vehicle import papers. At the Mexican border crossing, seek out a customs agent to whom to give tourist cards. Have ready 25 cents or 500 pesos per person on the Mexican side to cross the bridge. On the US side, walk through customs and show luggage. Have proof of American citizenship handy for each person. When finished with customs, load the busses and head home.

US IMPORT REGULATIONS

It is prohibited to bring any fresh foods and some unprocessed foods into the US. Failure to comply with this is subject to a fine of several thousand dollars and/or imprisonment.

WARNING

NO JOKING, FOOLING AROUND, OR STUPID COMMENTS AT THE BORDER, especially on the US side. Even loose or careless comments or jokes are taken quite seriously by customs agents. You may be severely harrassed and inconvenienced by customs officials! VEHICLE DRIVERS

ENTERING MEXICO

To obtain Mexican papers, present personal ID, driver's license, and actual vehicle title. Sign appropriate Mexican registration forms.

USING VEHICLE IN MEXICO

You will be given a temporary vehicle import document. You are not allowed to leave the country without your vehicle. The document is issued to you specifically, and you must be in this vehicle any time it is being used. Mexican insurance documents should be attached to this impor~ document.

LEAVING MEXICO

Upon departure from Mexico, vehicle papers must be turned in at the 40 kilometer checkpoint before reaching Nueve Laredo.

VEHICLE SHUTTLING

During the return trip on Sunday, 25 March, MONTERREY and LOS FELIX command vehicles need to be ready in Nuevo Laredo when the AGUASCALIENTES and LOS FELIX people arrive on the train around noon to shuttle people from the train station to the border. Vehicles themselves should not go through US customs until all people have been shuttled across the border.

IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT

In case of an accident, insurance agent numbers are listed by city in the insurance policy booklet you will receive at the border in Mexico. VEHICLE ITINERARIES

As soon as all people are across the border, the vans depart with the busses £or Longview, arriving after 9 pm. THE MEXICAN CULTURE

While ministering in Mexico, we will meet a culture that is different from our own. If we are to effectively communicate the Gospel and the Lord's love in Mexico, we need to understand the differences between our two cultures and gain true respect for the Mexican ways. Then we must use this understanding to overcome any cultural barriers that hinder communication. The goal of cultural understanding is not to make us Mexicans but to help us understand them, remove barriers to friendship, and make our ministry more effective.

FAMILY LIFE

Family ties are strong! The father is the dominant person. The eldest member of the family is usually the one who controls all the family actions. This may be a grandmother or other older person who lives with the family. The mother is the major unifying force in the family, although she is definitely subservient to the husband. It is common for extended families to be living together or with relatives.

DISCIPLINE

Small children are not strongly disciplined or inhibited. Don't be surprised or flustered when the kids walk in and out of a service; this is normal. Parents are strict with older youth, especially the girls. The girls are expected to maintain a reserve in public.

MALE-FEMALE INTERACTIONS

In Mexico, teenage guys are quite free to come and go. Their friendliness toward American girls might be perceived as forward. It is appropriate for American girls to politely maintain reserve in this situation. As a general rule, American guys should work with Mexican guys, and American girls should work with Mexican girls and younger children. Mexican girls do not go into places alone, and American girls need to adhere to this custom as well.

HOSPITALITY

The Mexicans are very warm and hospitable, and don't be surprised if you are frequently welcomed graciously into their homes. Welcome their hospitality. If they offer you coffee, soda, or pandulces , don't refuse them out of fear of their water. They can't drink the municipal water either, and they usually cook with purified water. Being in a Mexican home is a great opportunity to learn about them and share in their lives as well as to provide a friendly atmosphere to share the Gospel and encourage Christians. CULTURAL SENSITIVITY

The Mexican culture is rich with traditions and customs, many of which are unfamiliar to Americans. It is central to your effectiveness as an ambassador of Christ to respect this culture, looking beyond the "differentness" of it to individual persons.

ACCEPTANCE IS THE KEY! Make an effort to understand their point of view by constantly putting yourself in their shoes. The language barrier can create a wedge but you can ease this tension by remaining open and genuine, taking the initiative to create an accepting atmosphere., Express curiosity! Show an interest in their way of life! LEARN TO BECOME A GOOD LISTENER.

Adopt their manners as much as possible. Visitors can never become 100¾ Mexican, but we can show respect and acceptance of their culture. Try to avoid constantly comparing our culture with theirs, because that can lead to resentment from the Mexicans. But be open when they ask questions about your way of life.

IN A NUTSHELL

• Be very gracious as you visit people. They will be extremely hospitable toward you. Accept their acts of hosptality, and share food when it is offered.

• Be very careful to maintain a high moral standard. They do not appreciate poor manners or overt displays of affection among couples.

• Show love constantly. Mexicans have the expectation that you are a "proud, rich American stooping to their level." You need to demonstrate through love and acceptance that this is not true.

• Don't take alot of pictures without people's permission. It makes you look like a tourist instead of a servant, and them as the objects of your curiosity.

THE BOTTOM LINE

"Though I am free and belong to no man, I made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became a Jew, to win the Jews. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that, by all possible means, I might save some."

The Apostle Paul I Corinthians 9:19-22 EDUCATION

Most adults in the villages have a maximum 0£ 6 years 0£ £ormal schooling, and many are illiterate. The youth have had the opportunity of 5 years of schooling, beginning at age 5. (After 6th grade, they must pay to go to school.> They are intelligent and possess real wisdom and a keen understanding of human nature. Remember that, though these adults may lack education, they are mature in their actions, outlook, and ambitions. They have successfully reared families and are operating in an adult society with all of its problems and concerns. Most of their knowledge comes from their experiences rather than from formal education.

RELIGION

The Roman Catholic Church has been the dominant church in Mexico for centuries. This does not mean that the people have an understanding of the Catholic Church or its teachings. It does mean that they are aware of an unseen force somewhere in their midst. Thia has led to an inborn feeling of a necessity to do good works to gain merit. The awareness 0£ the "saints" and the "Virgin Mary" as forces for good and of help to them is a part of their cultural heritage. Biblical knowledge is very slight and it should not be assumed that they have a wide understanding of the Bible.

TO CONDEMN EITHER THE SAINTS, THE VIRGIN MARY, OR THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IS TO STIR UP NEEDLESS QUESTIONS AND DISSENSIONS AND WILL NOT AID IN COMMUNICATING THE GOSPEL. They need to see the person of Jesus Christ in a real way. Learning that there are problems in the Roman Catholic Church in Mexico will not save them; only a personal relationship with Jesus Christ will!

CLOTHING AND DRESS CUSTOMS

Mexicans generally dress modestly, Dress requirements reflect cultural differences that you will appreciate more when you are among the people they represent. Dress comfortably and pleasantly!

LADIES: Ladies in Mexico almost always wear dresses or skirts, and the skirts cover the knees at all times even when the lady is seated. Since it's often not proper for shoulders to be bare, you should not wear sleeveless dresses or blouses, Bras and close-toed shoes are a must. No low necklines, although medium necklines are fine. Shorts are unacceptable in most s ituations. Slacks are alright for some less-formal occasions, but jeans or tight - fitting slacks are not alright. 9e advised that too much makeup and/or black or red stockings or tights are common identification for prostitutes.

GUYS: Jeans are discouraged except for work crews. It is acceptable to wear jeans at home or at informal occasions. Guys can wear shorts while playing sports. Nice slacks and good shirts are recommended for church services and evangelistic outreaches. MONTEZUMA'S REVENGE: A GUIDE TO FOOD AND WATER

Th•re is alot of unwarranted fear about the food and water in Mexico. Dispelling nasty rumors and yet heeding some practical warnings, as well as using a bit o± common sense, will minimize the likelihood of getting sick in Mexico.

All tap water is unfit to drink in Mexico. Even the Mexicans themselves cannot handle it. All bottled beverages and most foods are processed with purified or boiled water. Sodas are plentiful and very cheap.

Food that has been cooked may be considered alright to eat. Canned or processed food is alri~ht too. Enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables only if you can peel them before eating. Don't try super-spicy foods unless you are sure that you can handle them.

Many of the problems that are considered to be Montezuma's Revenge actually do not come from eating tainted food but from the added stress of being in a foreign country and eating new, unusual foods. Not allowing stress to grab a hold of you will greatly_ reduce your chances of reacting to the food and water. Mexico is a laid-back country; lay back and enjoy the tripl Montezuma's Revenge does not only strike Americans when they visit Mexico; it strikes Mexicans when they visit the United States also.

Additionally, there is a strange rumor circulating among Christians that have been to Mexico before, saying that prayer is a sure way to avoid the attacks of Montezuma ....

BORDER CROSSING PROCEDURES

CHANGING MONEY

It is a good idea to change sufficient money at the border into Mexican Pesos in order to last £or several days. This can be done at any one of the many change houses on either side of the border.

US IMPORT REGULATIONS

It is ··prohibited to bring any fresh foods and some unprocessed foods into the USA.

TIPS FOR MINISTRY IN MEXICO

Praise the Lord! We have been given the awesome privilege of participating in the adventure of serving Almighty God, the Maker of Heaven and earth, and participating with Jesus in the work that He is doing among Christians in Mexico! We need to keep before us always the reasons for which Jesus is bringing us to Mexico: to encourage and strengthen the church, to spread the news that Jesus has died to take away sins and now lives again, and to transform our own outlook on li£e so that we may see the world more from His perspective.

A BATTLE IS BEING FOUGHT

Whenever God does something 0£ signi£icance in the world, Satan tries to undo it. We cannot a££ord to be ignorant 0£ this. Prayer is the key to staying ahead in the battle that is £ought in the spiritual realms as we serve Jesus. Even Jesus had to £ight in this way as He was about His Father's business. We need to realize that we cannot accomplish anything 0£ eternal value or lasting signi£icance in Mexico i£ we do not operate with the strength, guidance, and spiritual anointing that God gives to those who are serving Him. The Holy Spirit wants to interact continuously with us as we work in Mexico, and He knows that we desperately need it in order to be e££ectivel We must remember that one 0£ Satan's £avorite ways 0£ bringing spiritual de£eat into our lives is to convince us that we can do things in our own strength apart £ram the anointing power 0£ God operating in us. All he needs to do then is stand back and watch us tryl Our personal relationship with Jesus Christ is our li£eline--we must not neglect it £or any reason!

BE ALWAYS PREPARED: GIVING YOUR TESTIMONY

On occasion, you may be asked to give your testimony 0£ how you became personally acquainted with Jesus and how that has changed your li£e. Personal testimonies are an important part 0£ Mexican church services, especially during evangelistic outreaches. The Apostle Peter's advice is the best: wAlways be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason £or the hope that you have, with gentleness and respect. w (I Peter 3:15) Use a personal testimony to tell how the Lord has worked and is working in your life. You don't want to tell just of your conversion; our God is a living God, and people want to know how he has been working in your li£e recently. Your faith is a living £aith; show how God in£luences every aspect of your daily life.

Think out ahead of time what you will want to say. Pray for relevance and clarity. As you present your testimony, be brief and to the point. Tell what you used to be like, how you met Jesus personally, and then what changing influence Jesus has had on your life. Do not concentrate on your sinful past; rather, emphasize God's tremendous power which operates daily in your life, making you into a "new creature." Avoid using Christian jargon words, and, if speaking through a translator, be sure to talk slowly and to avoid using di££icult words that are hard to translate. It is best to tell a single spiritual truth that you have learned rather thana mixed jumble 0£ concepts. Above all, use scripture to illustrate and support your testimony. When closing, emphasize your point and then stop. Don't ramble.

BEARING THE MESSAGE OF RECONCILIATION: NEIGHBORHOOD EVANGELISM

When you are visiting homes, £irst introduce yoursel£, explain who you are , and then wait to be invited in be£ore entering. Don't be shocked by the poverty 0£ some 0£ the homes. When approaching, be care£ul about opening a gate that is shut. The courtyard is part 0£ their house. Show genuin~ interest and concern about the lives 0£ the people. When leaving, give them any appropriate tracts and invite them to evangelistic services scheduled. Be sure to pray be£ore and a£ter sharing the Gospel.
