AVS HOST CANES ON HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER NIGHT; DEPART TOMORROW FOR OVERSEAS TRIP The Colorado Avalanche wraps up a two-game homestand tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes at Pepsi Center. This evening is Hockey Fights Cancer Night at the arena. The Avs have not played since Saturday, when they beat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-3 here at Pepsi Center. That improved the club's record to 4-1-0 at home this season and capped off a 6-5-0 month of October. The Hurricanes are the first of six straight Eastern Conference opponents for the Avs. The team will depart tomorrow for a 10-day road trip, which includes a week in Sweden for the SAP NHL Global Series.

HOME, SWEET HOME Colorado is 4-1-0 at home this season, tied for the fourth-best points percentage (.800) in the Western Conference. The Avs have scored 23 goals in five home contests (4.6 per), their most through the opening five home games of a season since 2007-08 (also 23). The Avalanche's penalty-kill unit has allowed only one goal at Pepsi Center, killing 15-of-16 short-handed situations (93.8%), including a current streak of 12 straight since yielding a goal in the home opener. Colorado ranks fifth in home PK percentage. The Avs went 2- for-5 on the power play on Saturday against Chicago, and have now scored on 26.1% of their opportunities at home, fifth in the NHL.

AVS & HURRICANES Tonight is the first of two meetings between the Avalanche and Hurricanes in 2017-18, and Carolina's only visit to the Mile High City. The Avs will make their one trip to Raleigh on Feb. 10. Colorado won both meetings last season. The Avs have gained points in 14 straight home games against the Hurricanes, going 11-0-3 since the start of the 1996-97 season (11 wins, 2 ties, 1 OT loss). The Hurricanes' 1-0 overtime victory on Oct. 21, 2015 at Pepsi Center was the franchise's first win in Denver since they were the (Feb. 9, 1996 at McNichols Sports Arena). That snapped a 10-game home win streak by the Avalanche in this series and was Carolina's first-ever win at Pepsi Center. The Avs are 10-0-1 at home against Hurricanes since this building opened in 1999-2000.

SWEDEN BOUND The Avalanche tomorrow will depart for a 10-day road trip, which includes a week in Sweden for the 2017 SAP NHL Global Series. The Avs will play two games against the Ottawa Senators in Stockholm on Friday, Nov. 10, and Saturday, Nov. 11. Colorado is making its second trip to Europe and its international regular-season debut. The Avs were part of the 2001 NHL Challenge Series, and as defending champions defeated Brynas IF of the Swedish Elite League by a score of 5-3 thanks to Alex Tanguay’s hat trick. Colorado has four Swedish players on its current roster: Gabriel Landeskog (Stockholm), Anton Lindholm (Skelleftea), Patrik Nemeth (Stockholm) and Carl Soderberg (Malmo).

BARRIE GOOD MONTH Tyson Barrie led all Colorado blueliners with nine points (2g/7a) in 11 games during the opening month, the most points by an Avalanche defenseman in October since John-Michael Liles recorded 11 in October of 2010. Barrie had a career-high six game point streak from Oct. 11-24, the longest by an Avs defenseman since Kevin Shattenkirk’s nine-game run from Nov. 17 to Dec. 4, 2010. Barrie tallied his 200th career NHL point on Oct. 28 against Chicago, becoming the sixth rearguard in franchise history to reach that milestone. The Victoria, B.C., native has registered a point in all five home games, the first Avalanche defenseman to ever record points in each of his first five home games of a season. In fact, Barrie's five-game home point streak to start a season equals the second-longest in Colorado history.

SHOWING IMPROVEMENT The Avalanche's penalty killing unit gave up five power-play goals in the first two games (5/10, 50%), but has allowed just four PPG in the last nine contests (32/36, 88.9%). Colorado's power-play unit has gone 7-for-36 (19.4%) over the last eight games after starting the season 1-for-12 (8.3%) in its first three contests. The Avs have already scored two power-play goals in a game twice this season, after doing it only four times all last year.

BACK-TO-BACK The Avs have played two of their 11 back-to-back games so far, going 1-1-0 in the first game and 1-1-0 in the second. Colorado also played 11 back-to-back games last year, finishing 2-8-1 in the first contest and 4-7-0 in the second.

200 CLUB Tyson Barrie recorded his 200th career NHL point on Saturday night against Chicago, becoming the sixth defenseman in franchise history to reach 200 points.

RUNNING ON EMPTY Colorado has scored six empty-net goals this season, the most of any team in the NHL. The Avalanche's six empty-net tallies are already one more than they had all of last season. Colorado scored two empty netters on Oct. 11 against Boston, the first time they've done that in a single game since March 2, 2014 vs. Tampa Bay.

DAY-DREAM BELIEVER The Avs will play 12 afternoon games this season, their most since 2008-09 (also 12). Colorado is 1-2-0 so far in day games this year. Last Friday's "Nevada Day" contest in Las Vegas was one of three weekday matinees for the Avs this season, as they played in Boston on Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 9) and will host the Ducks on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, Jan. 15). The Avs are scheduled for seven home afternoon contests in 2017-18, equaling the most in Avalanche history (also 1998-99 and 2002-03).
