Toowoomba Cricket Community

As we draw another hectic season of Toowoomba Cricket to a close its worth pausing to reflect on the season as every cricketing summer produces something different

Every season throws up new challenges and the 2015/16 season was no different to any others – in the end we scheduled some 261 matches, for 41 senior teams, across 3 match formats for our 500 plus registered senior players. At Junior level we had well in excess of 800 players playing various pathway formats. In addition the Rep scene had plenty of opportunity starting with the Bulls Masters T20 Country Challenge in Mackay over the October long weekend, the Webb Shield and Plunkett Cup, various SQCC Carnivals which flowed onto North v South Games and ultimately Qld Country. We saw the return of the A-grade (Open) Grade T20 at Heritage Oval with a team from Lockyer also participating, in addition we added the combined BCD-grade T20 comp which grow out of last season’s Club review meetings

On top of this we were involved in a number of activities during the season, including:  The continued efforts of the Junior Sub-committee managing the junior pathway as well as the changing junior environment which is seeing increased player involvement – a tremendous by the effort  A number of projects: o The return of cricket to Heritage Oval which improved as the season progressed and we expect further improvement across next season o The development of the Sports Park at Highfields which will not only benefit the Highfields-Railways Club, but be a benefit for all cricketers in the region o The addition of two new light poles at Heritage Oval, funding shared by the TCI, Bears Rugby & Bombers AFL o Ongoing involvement in the Charlton Sports complex project  We continued hiring Green Options to help with the preseason preparation work of our turf which helped us to get up & running at the season start  Starting discussions on competition structure, grading, formats – something which is a lot more complex than 30 years ago, putting our head in the sand isn’t an option!

In fear of forgetting people I apologize in advance but our season would not run without a lot of effort from many people:  Our curators: Pat, Marcus, Laurie, Bob, Ross & Radar, Mick, the team at Uni and their band of helpers – a big thank you for all your efforts.  The Toowoomba Regional Council team who not only maintained fields, but also provided tremendous support & help with a number of projects which benefit cricket  The local media – Ben, Glen and the Chronicle team, the Kieran & the WIN News team, Tom & the Seven crew and Ian Reimers with his weekly cricket segment to name but a few  Peter Davies for all his behind the scenes IT and Admin work – especially with MyCricket, our web site and points collection  Keith Barton and Ivan Walls for their behind the scenes work  Jason McWilliam and the Club delegates who make up the Competition Committee  All those involved in helping pull the Rep season together, especially Troy, Shaun, Adam, Scruff , Rusty and the players for making themselves available. Thanks also to Rusty and Clayton for looking after the scoring etc and to the National Hotel for coming on Board to sponsor the Player of the Match Awards and provide lunches  The sponsors & supporters of both Toowoomba Cricket and our Clubs – your help keeping participation costs down and providing equipment is most appreciated  All the Club Volunteers – too many to name but every Club has a small group of people who make sure things happen so many can enjoy their cricket – a big thankyou to these people, take the opportunity to thank them  Chris Howard’s team of men in black and white(maybe this should now be Blue & Black) who grow in numbers this season Future challenges and opportunities facing us over the coming seasons  Continued development and recruitment of junior players, providing an effective pathway, so they are retained in the sport  Maximising the opportunity for people to play the game, weather a social cricketer or a player aiming for higher representative honours – representative cricket is in need of fine tuning to make it attractive and affordable for players – this is starting to happen at a QC and QCCA level  Is our current Club structure and grading system still relevant and sustainable in today’s environment – do we have a grading/relegation function via our 1-day comp?  Grounds – with the HSPk coming on line we need to review our grounds and pitches, 11 turf pitches more than meet our needs, more add costs! Do we convert CC1, CC2 and maybe CC8 to synthetic fields down the track? We need light at least one other ground, maybe two, the HSPk and CC8 are possible candidates  The continued recruitment and development of umpires  People play cricket in our community basically for recreation, we are lucky enough to be able to provide a range of grades so as to more closely align their abilities – two of the biggest things which affect player enjoyment and in the end player retention is behaviour (sledging) and playing out of their grade – we have made some progress, but more is needed! All have a role to play in this.  Managing the cost of playing the game

Finally I would like to thank the Board for all their efforts as well as the support, ideas and interest in the sport by the various Club Presidents, Secretaries and Captains whose input is most valuable. If interested in playing a part in the administration of the game please don’t hesitate to contact me. We hope to see you all involved in cricket again next season – enjoying all that that game has to offer Angus Rathie President Toowoomba Cricket 2015-16 Toowoomba Cricket Board: Angus Rathie (President), Chris Howard (Secretary), Cherie Fenwick (Treasurer), John Littleproud, Dave Meiklejohn, David Lester & Doug Lush (Juniors Representatives), Kent Reimers & Bill Oaks 2015-16 Competition Sub Committee: Jason McWilliam (Chairman), Nick Abbate, Matt Jurgs, Dave Meiklejohn, Rick Wood, 2015-16 Junior Sub Committee: Dean Spanner, Valma Cahill, Doug Lush, Dave Lester and the various Club Delegates

Intercity Junior Representative Report.

The Intercity program was difficult to implement this season. Clashes with local competitions, zone selections and trainings and early starts to winter sports has restricted the Sunday’s available. Work and school commitments from the older age group has made team selections particularly difficult.

Toowoomba fielded a team in the under 12 and under 14 age groups that played against teams from Lockyer Valley, Southern Downs (Warwick & Stanthorpe) and Western Downs. The intention was to play 3 games prior to Christmas and 3 games after but difficulties getting a starting date sorted out delayed the first round so only 2 games were played prior to Christmas and 4 afterwards.

The under 12 competition was very even between Toowoomba and Lockyer with both teams winning 5 games each. Lockyer made the most of the run scoring opportunities to collect bonus points and finish on top of the table. The final was well contested by both teams but the host team continued their winning streak to take the trophy. Thanks to Regan Draheim for looking after this team.

The under 14 competition was similarly even. Toowoomba won 5 of their 6 games to top the table and Lockyer won 4 games. This set up a home final for our under 14 team. Played at Captain Cook 6 Toowoomba earned the trophy through an excellent team performance, the main difference between the 2 sides on the day was 2 excellent run outs. The first run out removed a batsman who was well set and the other ended the innings of possibly Lockyer’s most damaging batsman before it had really started. It was an excellent finals performance by a very good team that was very well coached by Andrew Crooke.

The under 16 team played 2 games against a team from the Lockyer Valley. Toowoomba won a close game at Cahill Park then the tables were reversed when they met at Captain Cook 8. Unfortunately a third game was not possible to see if one team was better than the other. Thanks to Norm Martin for organising the under 16’s.

The intercity program is struggling due to the lack of players and a resultant lack of competitiveness from Western Downs. During one game the Western Downs under 12 team included 8 Toowoomba boys just to create a team. The Southern Downs can be competitive at times but not regularly enough to create a genuine competition at the moment. The under 16 program has already been limited to 2 teams and due to complications only 2 games were played. Major changes need to be made to the intercity program to ensure it’s viability into the future. Toowoomba and Lockyer can field competitive teams but developing the other centres is the challenge. Norm Jenner Spirit of Cricket Trophy Donated & Voted on by the members of the Toowoomba Cricket Umpires Association

Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any Action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of plays rests with the captains. Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match. Every player is expected to make an important contribution towards this.
