These two houses were leased by Thomas PERRIN in 1794 when he married his second wife. They are two halves of the same building; Ivy Cottage on the left and Highbury on the right. Thomas lived in Highbury and his son William lived in Ivy Cottage. The carpenter’s yard was on the right hand side of Highbury.

William PERRIN was the parish clerk for over forty years from 1781 to 1826 and also the last Borseholder from 1791 to 1800, and the parish constable until 1826. The club known as the Borseholder is now kept on the wall of the church.

THE BORSEHOLDER

In the next generation Susanna PERRIN, the daughter of Samuel, married Abraham REEVE who was the parish clerk at Wateringbury for nearly fifty years beginning in 1826. Their daughter Hannah REEVE was married in 1862 to Henry PERRIN who emigrated to Brazil and worked as a building contractor in Rio de Janeiro from 1862 until about 1900. Hannah returned to and died at Greenwich in 1904. CHARLES PERRIN’S HOUSE

Charles PERRIN’s house has a black door on the left next to the alley for his horses. Charles lived here for over 30 years from 1817 to 1848. Charles the son of William took over the family business in 1823. He ran the business from the same carpentry yard as his father and grandfather, further along the road to the left.

Charles PERRIN married Mary BRADD and they had three children

1) Charles Finch PERRIN 1806 died in 1840 without having any surviving children.

2) William Bradd PERRIN 1810 married Lucy HEWITT. He became a tailor and moved to Sydenham.

VINE HOUSE

John PERRIN moved to Nettlested in 1849 and when he returned to Wateringbury in 1851 the house he moved to was, by chance, Ivy Cottage. While he was there the owners of the carpenter’s yard, which John was still leasing, decided to start building a house. They never finished it so John bought the yard and completed the building himself. John moved into his own property, known as Vine House, in 1855 and remained there until he left Wateringbury in 1860. He was the last of the PERRINs to live in Wateringbury.
