SNOW CHAINS MUST BE CARRIED ON BOTH ROADS - chains can be hired in Bairnsdale/Omeo or Bright/Harrietville. DOGS AT DINNER PLAIN As a club member, your dogs will be covered by the Dog Permit granted to the Alaskan Malamute Club. Dogs that do not belong to members may not be brought to Dinner Plain unless the owner has arranged their own dog permit. Those wishing to extend their stay must obtain their own Dog Permit - contact the Alpine Shire on (03) 5755 0555 for details. We are very fortunate that we are able to take our dogs to Dinner Plain and we want to keep it that way. We must ask all who attend the snow weekend to adhere strictly to the following rules: • If you are staying at Dinner Plain dogs must be accommodated overnight in vehicles or trailers in the overnight carpark at Scrubbers End to minimise disturbance to others. • Do not block trails or roads with your dogs or equipment and always give way to skiers. • Dogs must be on hand-held lead or in vehicles/trailers at all times. It is not permissible to stake dogs out in the Dinner Plain Resort area and dogs must never be off lead. • On no account must any dog be allowed inside a lodge. • Dogs must not be taken into the National Park area. These rules are to be strictly adhered to by all members and their guests who are at Dinner Plain for our Snow Weekend, failure to do so could jeopardise the club's Snow Weekend in future years. Our 11 year old girl, Ellie, was recently diagnosed with pancreatitis. Ellie was very uncomfortable, reluctant to move and generally out of sorts, however her appetite and enthusiasm for her food mislead us into thinking it was an injury rather than a serious medical condition. When she didn’t improve it was off to the vets and after a series of tests pancreatitis was diagnosed, most likely caused by having fed her a particularly fatty lamb offcut for dinner. Ellie was treated with antibiotics and pain killers and remained at the vets on a drip for a couple of days. She returned home looking like her normal exuberant self, however we now have to take extreme care with her diet. The vet indicated that pancreatitis is often caused by the sudden introduction of a large amount of fat in the diet, setting the pancreas into overproduction of enzymes that start damaging the pancreas and organs around it which can cause death if not treated promptly. Considering Ellie had not shown many of the symptoms usually associated with pancreatitis (loss of appetite, vomiting etc.) we were lucky that Ellie was diagnosed quickly and that she has made a full recovery. The next scheduled day hike is to be held on the 12th of May in blackwood and this is a new hike so come along and it is advertised in the upcoming Mally Mail. The sledding Point Score season kicks off at the You Yangs on the 19/20 May and there will be a sledding training session on offer on the Saturday afternoon before racing commences. This is a perfect opportunity to do some passing training with your dogs before heading out on the track in your first race. Hope to see you all there!

Weight pull report – Di Mitchell The Weight Pull Competition for 2012 is yet to begin but preparation is ongoing, to ensure that the year is another successful one. This year the AMCV is running events in conjunction with the ASTCV. The first event will be held on Saturday April 21st. This will be a great opportunity for both Clubs to work together to continue promoting the sport and encourage more people to participate with their dogs. Last year we saw a range of different breeds participating in the Weight Pull events and I am looking forward to seeing the same again this year. The site is looking fairly good. It is weed free with just a touch up required to have it ready for the first event. Event 1 for this year will be the first time the ASTCV has run the event. I and other committee members will be assisting them throughout the day and I encourage everyone to come along to give a helping hand. For anyone who has ever been to one of our Weight Pull events, you would know that many hands really do make light work!! And why not bring your dog and have a go! We saw some fantastic results last year, where dogs pulled almost a tonne!!! I look forward to seeing some more great results this year. Please check your Mally Mail or the Website for more Competition details and I hope to see you all there on the 21st. Obedience – Simone Dines No report 5.3 Newsletter – Sandy Koch The April Malamute Mail is well underway, however has been held back to allow publishing of 2 “picnic fun walks” that have been scheduled in April and May. The walks are being held in the Botanical Gardens on Sunday 22 April and Jells Park at Wheelers Hill on Sunday 27 May, and will be led by our obedience coordinator Simone Dines. As there has been interest in shorter, local walks on Facebook, we hope these events will be well attended. It is hoped to get the Malamute Mail out soon after Easter, so apologies for the delay. 5.4 Fundraising – Sharen McPhan Due to the poor turnout at our recent Open Show, we did not hold a raffle and guess the lolly jar. We will be doing the Cadbury Chocolates again this year, so could everyone please let me know if they are interested and roughly how many boxes they would like to sell. 5.5 Secretary – Sandy Koch There have been 16 new members join since my last General Meeting report in July. There are currently 94 memberships which is a similar number to this time last year. The amended club rules have been circulated to the membership and are available on the AMCV website. Membership renewals are due at the end of June and renewal notices will be published in the April and June issues of the Malamute Mail, as well as being available in PDF on the website. Motion: That the Vice-Presidents’ and Co-ordinator’s reports as presented be accepted. Moved: C McPhan Seconded: S McPhan CARRIED

6. GENERAL BUSINESS 6.1 Business Arising from Correspondence 6.1.1 Letter from Debbie Murphy-Boatman Murphy – Concerns about health testing requirements for breeding: The letter and the AMCV’s response were read to the members. 6.1.2 Response from Dogs Queensland re: P Dykstra: Dogs Queensland indicated that they would not be taking the matter any further. 6.1.3 H Rolls – re non-renewal of membership due to her Malamute having passed away.

6.2 Proposed Amendment to Show Point Score Competition The Committee has noted that the inclusion of the AMCV Championship Show in the Show Point Score can result in an exhibit which has only been shown at the one show winning an award in the show point score, due to the large number of exhibits compared to other shows. As the Show Point score was originally intended to encourage new exhibitors to attend shows, the inclusion of the Championship Show is deemed to be counterproductive to the original intent of the Show Point Score Competition. It was noted that excluding the Championship Show from the point score in previous years would not have made any difference to the outcome in most cases. Motion: That the AMCV Championship Show results be excluded from the Show Point Score Competition commencing in 2013. Moved: AMCV Committee Seconded: O Singer CARRIED

6.3 Fundraising for Karen Hilan: The AMCV has been requested to participate in fundraising efforts for financial aid to Karen Hilan, who is a Queensland Malamute owner and exhibitor (non- AMCV member) whose partner died recently in a truck accident. The AMCV Statement of Purposes states the following: (m) to promote and assist worthy causes, as agreed at a General Meeting of the members of the Club; Accordingly, the Committee is putting the request to assist Karen Hilan to the membership for consideration. As no one present at the meeting wished to move the proposal, the motion was declared to have lapsed.

6.4 2011 Show Point Score Presentations Awards were presented to the winners of the 2011 Show Point Score competition.

Murphy Niltaran Coolrup Colt 10/07/1998 - 17/04/2012 To My Beautiful Old Man Murphy, On Tuesday 17th of April it was time to say goodbye. No matter how much I had tried to prepare myself for this day, saying goodbye brought overwhelming sadness and many, many tears… the end of an era. Now that you are gone things are different but there are so many things I remember that make me smile when I think of you. I will always remember you in the start chute, screaming at the top of your lungs. You just wanted to run! In fact, you made it very clear from the moment we arrived at any event that you were there, there was never any doubt that Murphy had arrived. Who could mistake that cry? I remember hiking with you and having you insist on going in every puddle we saw, no matter how deep! I remember your destruction of many back yards and the escapades that followed as a young Murphy. I remember car rides with you and having your big smiling face in the rear vision mirror. I remember when you used to lie on the veranda with all the gang there, watching over them and quietly, letting the day go by. I remember our daily chats. You would always tell me about your day and I miss those conversations of woo woos. I miss having you come to say goodnight, before lying next to the bed to go to sleep each night. I miss being able to see you outside the window just knowing you are there. Now there is one less set of footsteps following me around. You were the start of a way of life Murphy and no words are enough to describe how much you mean to me. Saying goodbye was heartbreaking but I know that now you can be happy and run whenever you want, for as long as you want and as fast as you want! You loved many things but running was undoubtedly your passion and now you can be free to run again.

Committee Profile: Sharen McPhan Committee Positions: Show Secretary & Fundraising Coordinator Age: 38 Occupation: Mum to a 5 year old terror! (Tyler) Family members: Husband Colin and 5 year old terror Tyler.  Kennel: Tanome – located in Clyde North. AMCV Involvement: I have been a member of the AMCV since 1996. I have been on the Committee on and off for a total of 6 years. Positions held: Referral Officer, Newsletter Editor, Weight Pull Co-ordinator and now Show Secretary. My history with the Alaskan Malamute: I was first introduced to the Alaskan Malamute back in December 1995 when an 8 week old bundle of trouble named Bandit came into my life. It was then that my addiction and love for this magnificent breed began. Bandit left us in September 2006, one month shy of his 11th birthday. Our other dogs that are no longer with us were: Rudi (American import and foundation of Tanome Kennels, left us in April 2009 aged 12 ½ years), and Chae (left us in March 2010 aged almost 11 years). Our current team consists of 10 Malamutes: Jai, Jack, Shelby and Darcy who are Colin’s 4-dog team, Brock and Millie who I ran as a 2-dog team last year, Rush, Ryme and Little- Miss who are the new kids here at Tanome, and Meeka who is now 12 ½ years of age and is thoroughly enjoying her role as resident couch potato! Brock, Shelby, Rush and Ryme are also our current show team. Myself and my husband Colin are both heavily involved in all aspects of the Alaskan Malamute. Our main passion is sledding, although I’m more well known as “strapper” rather than “musher”, regularly helping Colin and his 4-dog team get to the start line. Last year I competed in the 2-dog class and came 2nd place in the AMCV’s premier sledding event The State Cup. We regularly attend dog shows during the summer months and also participate in Weight Pull events, having achieved a WWPD Excellence title with our boy Jai. We have also participated in an Endurance Test with our boy Brock, who gained his Endurance Title. Other interests: Is there any????? In my spare time (haha!) I do enjoy a spot of fishing in our little boat, and time relaxing with my family.

Pet Obesity

Obesity in Australian dogs is at an all-time record high, with recent AVA statistics showing that 60% of dogs over 4 are either over-weight or obese. Obesity can be a hidden disease, with many pet owners not really linking it to other conditions like arthritis, diabetes and liver problems. Obesity is caused by a combination of over-feeding and lack of exercise, but over-feeding is by far the most common problem. Most pet owners use food as a bonding tool with their pets, either by way of feeding treats as a reward, or as part of training, or simply as a way of “loving” their pet by offering food scraps and left-overs. One of the main culprits in obesity is dry food, because it is so calorie dense. Most owners just don’t realise that because dry food has had the natural moisture removed (a natural raw food diet is about 67% moisture, whereas dry foods are about 8% moisture), then the food is actually 3-4 times more concentrated in energy, and you need to feed 3-4 times less in weight/volume to achieve the same calorie content. It is a common mistake to look at a bowl of dry food and think “gee, that’s not much, I’ll add a bit more”. And that little bit more each day results in obesity. Obesity is linked to many diseases, including arthritis, diabetes, liver failure, thyroid failure, constipation and anal gland impaction. One of the easiest ways to lose un-wanted weight from your dog or cat is to switch to a raw food diet, and feed just one meal per day, in the morning. Raw food will speed up metabolism, and the extra volume will keep your pet satiated, so they are not constantly looking for more food. Feeding in the morning will match the metabolic needs of the animal, and prevent conversion of blood glucose to fat. Also you can find more information at www.vetsallnatural.com.au, including helpful videos and other useful articles for your pets.

Ralph Koch Referral Update – Dogs for Adoption Referral Officer We continue to have a large number of Mallies and Mal crosses needing new homes, from quite a few older dogs right down to some1 year old youngsters. It continues to be a huge problem, but thanks largely to the efforts of the girls at the Alaskan Malamute Rehoming Aid (AMRAA), nearly all of the dogs listed avoid being put to sleep and end up in good new homes, however the kennelling and veterinary costs associated with rescuing makes it very expensive. Community support with financial assistance is the only way AMRAA can continue to help the many dogs who are given up by their owners, so any assistance with donations or fostering dogs is much appreciated. AMRAA is a registered not-for-profit organisation with Charity and Deductible Gift Recipient status, so If you would like to make a tax deductable donation to AMRAA, please go their website www.amraa.org.au or their Facebook page for details on how to donate.
