MINNESOTA STATE CAPITOL ROTUNDA—ST. PAUL THE MALL OF AMERICA—BLOOMINGTON Hazeltine National Golf Club Originally known as The Executive Golf Club of Minnesota, this Robert Trent Jones-designed course was rechristened Hazeltine National Golf Club (in honor of adjacent Lake Hazeltine) and opened for play in 1962. Under the direction of Jones’ son, Rees, the layout of the course has continued to evolve over the years, resulting in what some say is the finest private course in the Midwestern United States. In 1991, it hosted the U.S. Open that would become Payne Stewart's second major championship following a dramatic 18-hole playoff come-from-behind victory over Scott Simpson. All told, the course has produced a list of championships unrivaled among clubs less than 50 years old, and at the conclusion of the 2016 Ryder Cup, it will become one of only two courses in the United States to have hosted the Ryder Cup in addition to the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women’s Open, the U.S. Senior Open, and the U.S. Amateur Championship. The course itself is a par-72, 7,674-yard tribute to the ages-old struggle between forest and prairie—hilly, with narrow fairways and small greens, there are water hazards on nine holes. The signature par-four sixteenth requires a tee shot of 220 yards over Lake Hazeltine; the green is a raised peninsula, falling off on all sides, with additional hazards in back and to the right. Always a challenge, the course takes on a whole new dimension whenever the wind is up. 16TH HOLE—HAZELTINE NATIONAL GOLF CLUB C A L L T O L L - F R E E : 1 . 8 8 8 . 4 3 9 . 8 8 8 6 O N T H E W E B : W W W .
