SHANDS LAKE SHORE Terms of divorce coming soon By CARL MCKINNEY [email protected] The healthcare cor- poration that seeks to untether itself from Lake Shore Hospital is expected to soon propose some divorce terms. Meanwhile, the government body that leases out the hospital is shopping around for new partners. Community Health Systems, which leases the taxpayer-owned brick-and-mortar hospi- tal building, is asking to be let out of the contract with 20 years still left. The company will likely submit a separation plan by week’s end. That would mark the beginning of nego- tiations with the hos- pital’s custodian, the Lake Shore Hospital Authority, a government body created by state statute. The hospital authori- ty’s executive director, Dale Williams, con- firmed Monday that CHS is close to turning in its proposal. A special meeting will likely be called for the end of June, possibly around June 25, Williams said. Williams also con- firmed Monday the hospital authority has approached Shands about moving back into the hospital. Shands is responsible for about 40 percent of the guarantee on the current lease. “And so they’re still sort of a player,” Williams said. Shands’ name is also on the Lake Shore Hospital building, but it no longer operates the facility. The hos- pital authority has not received any response to its request asking Shands to consider returning, Williams said. “Hopefully we’ll hear something back from them one way or the other,” he said. CHS says Lake Shore Hospital isn’t profitable enough to justify the cost of doing business, according to the author- ity. Covid-19 played a part in making the year diffi- cult for the company. It will fall on the authority’s board of trustees to decide how to respond to the compa- ny’s request to terminate the lease, which still has a life worth about $10 FILE million in rent payments, Lake Shore Hospital’s tenant, Community Health Systems, wants out of its contract operating the facility. The company said the hospital is Williams said. not profitable enough, according to the Lake Shore Hospital Authority, a government body with custodianship over the facility.
