Fellowship.Community December 2018 MEMBERS END OF YEAR LUNCH FRIDAY 14 DECEMBER 2018 The Carbine club of New South Wales end of year lunch was held last Friday in the Members’ Dining Room at the Sydney Cricket Ground. A great roll up of members with their invited guests, including yachtsman and winemaker Sir James Hardy, Australian golfer Peter O’Malley, New South Wales Police Commissioner Mick Fuller, and Daphne Benaud (Richie was a past winner of the Davo Award). At the lunch, the Carbine Club of NSW announced the establishment of a partnership between Commonwealth Games Australia, the New South Wales Institute of Sport and the Carbine Club of NSW. The purpose of the partnership is to fund a programme for five scholarships each year, supporting talented New South Wales para-athletes who participate in Commonwealth Games sports. Instigated by club member Craig Phillips, CEO of Commonwealth Games Australia, the programme has been endorsed by the Australian Paralympic Committee and Kurt Fearnley, after whom the scholarship will be named. Kurt will serve on the selection panel and provide mentoring to scholarship recipients. Each year at the lunch, the Carbine Club recognises an individual who has made a long and valuable contribution to sport, media and the community. Named after Alan Davidson, a great Australian Test cricketer and one of the foundation members of the Carbine Club of NSW, previous winners of the Davo Award include Ray Warren, Richie Benaud, Norman May, Ron Coote, John Tapp, Sir Nicholas Shehadie and Neil Harvey. In 2018, the selection committee had no hesitation in nominating Davo himself, to receive the Davo Award.

People tell him he must have drunk a bottle of scotch and smoked a packet of cigarettes every day to have the voice that he has. That's not the case - at least, not anymore . The son of a railway worker, Ray placed his first bet on a horse called Playboy at the age of just six, and won. A lifelong love of the track - and the punt - was born. During his remarkable broadcasting career, which has now spanned almost five decades, Ray has called three Melbourne Cups, Commonwealth and Olympic Games swimming, and countless rugby league matches alongside his mates Fatty, Sterlo and Gus. Here, for the first time, Ray reveals the man behind the microphone. He speaks of the great highs and devastating lows of his career and life in the same way he calls every sporting event: with great passion, colour and candour. Ray Warren is one of the most experienced sports broadcasters in Australia. The son of a railway worker, he began calling racing and rugby league in country NSW in 1966, and worked for several radio stations and Channel Ten before joining the Nine Network in 1989.

Photo www.photosport.nz ID LAST week’s NRL awards night in Sydney finally prove Australian-based players can prosper by Djoining the Warriors -- that a transfer to Auckland is not a kiss of death to one’s aspirations? The Warri- ors carried off four major prizes, the most of any club, highlighted by captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck receiving the supreme Dally M Medal. His recognition should eliminate all prejudices about crossing the Tasman. RTS’s success was warmly and widely greeted in the Sydney media. The Daily Telegraph virtually said the Warriors were no longer an outpost “where careers go to die”. It recalled dire warnings that RTS would sink into oblivion after leaving the Sydney Roosters in 2016, especially when his first Warriors season was ruined by a serious knee injury. Instead, he rose from that setback to be acclaimed the NRL’s best player. Although RTS was a warm favourite on trans-Tasman betting charts his victory was not confirmed until the last votes were announced by Kangaroos coach and thirteenth Immortal Mal Meninga. The highly prized medal was placed around his neck by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, a diehard Cronulla fan, and the Fullback of the Year trophy was presented to him by quadruple Dally M medallist Johnathan Thurston.

  • Wisdom Wit Whimsy
Wisdom Wit Whimsy more than one thousand quotations An eclectic collection of notable things that people have said – some wise, some witty, and some just simply weird and wonderful. Introduction How often have you thought “I wish I’d said that”, over something that you’d heard or read? There was beauty in the words, or innate wisdom, or simply a witty observation on life. And how often have you had a chuckle over words that simply didn’t come out the way they were intended? Well, I’ve been collecting words like that for about forty years now. I have sorted them, “as you do”, under the headings of Wisdom, Wit and Whimsy. There is often, however, wit to be found in the wisdom, wisdom in the wit and all manner of things, including unintended profundity, in the whimsy. I offer this collection now to you, dear reader, for your “delectation and amusement”. You will find the ‘classic’ quote-makers here, such as Mark Twain and Groucho Marx. But I hope you will also share my joy at the quotes that I have found in the most unlikely places, such as in foreign language movies. My collection is, you will find, devoid of quotes that are merely clever. There is nothing from a Gump chocolate box here. The quotes I have brought together needed substance to ‘make the cut’. It seems that the source of the best quotes is often politics, sport, TV, movies and the press. I think that says something about the general influences in our life.
