Carbine Club of NSW Inc 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

\The Carbine Club of is bonded by three simple but very significant affections – for sport, fellowship and community.

Membership includes champions from many fields of sport, including Olympic and , Cricket, Horse Racing, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Australian Football, Basketball, Baseball, Surf Lifesaving, Golf and other sports. Other members have established their reputation in sports administration, business, politics and the media.

The Club conducts a number of luncheons each year, at which it honours a particular sport coinciding with a national or international event in that sport.

All funds raised are used to encourage youth in sport.

Annual Report ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 9 MARCH

There was a strong turn out of members for the Annual General Meeting held in the new grandstand at Randwick racecourse with a sumptuous repast in the Stables restaurant to conclude.

Outgoing Chairman Jamie Barkley provided a rundown of the clubs activities in the year just past and reminisced about what made the Carbine Club special for him.

Incoming chairman Michael Crismale spoke on behalf of all members thanking Jamie for his service to the club over the last two years and thanked also retiring committee members Peter Kerr, Mike Bushell, and Charles Turner who have made a substantial contribution to the club over many years.

Proposers and seconders nominated new Ordinary Members Darren Kane, Glen Duncan, Nick Fordham, Mark Couter, and Stephen Healey. Special Members Craig Edwards, Doug May, Steve Crawley and Steve Grant who were duly welcomed into the club.

Michael then welcomed Damian Keogh as Deputy-Chairman and new committee members Phil Kearns, Caroline Searcy, and Darren Kane.

Over lunch IOC Deputy President John Coates gave fellow members the insiders view on the upcoming Rio Olympics and 's medal chances. Members were able to enjoy the conviviality of post lunch drinks on the deck overlooking the city skyline.

AUTUMN RACING – 18 MARCH

The Carbine Club’s Annual Autumn Racing Luncheon was enjoyed by over 380 guests at Royal Randwick Racecourse. Carbine Club Member Caroline Searcy acted as MC and introduced Chairman Michael Crismale who welcomed members and guests to the luncheon. He acknowledged the many supporters in the room.

Carbine Club Members Alan Davidson AM MBE, John Coates AC and Ron Quinton OAM were presented with 25 year member badges, having been members of the Club for 39 yrs, 35yrs and 31yrs respectively. A $5,000 donation was presented to Surf Life Saving NSW and accepted by SLSA CEO and Carbine Club Member Phil Vanny.

An additional donation was made on behalf of the club to the Olivia Inglis Eventing Scholarship.

Sadly, Olivia, daughter of CCNSW member Arthur Inglis was tragically killed at an equestrian event. Arthur humbly accepted the donation and was grateful for the wide support he and his family had received.

Richard Haynes interviewed Ian Craig and Ron Quinton about the tradition and history of the Golden Slipper as well as a punters forum that included Richard Freedman, Darren Flindell and Glenn Munsie.

Guests were entertained by Magician/Comedian Jack Black, who enlisted the help from some volunteers in the audience.

Guests enjoyed post luncheon drinks in The Stables on Level 4, and the Call of Card.

OLYMPIC LUNCH – 29 APRIL

On Friday April 29 The Carbine Club of NSW hosted its official Olympic lunch in the Noble Dining Room at the Sydney Cricket Ground. A record attendance of over 430 members and guests celebrated the “Road to Rio” in support of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team. It only happens every four years and it is always a special event for members and guests. A Brazillan Dance Troupe kicked off proceedings with lots of energy, colour and enthusiasm. Carbine Club Members Caroline Searcy and Amy Hetzel led the event as MC and Interviewer. It was great to see the Clubs female members front and centre on the day. Chairman Michael Crismale welcomed members and guests and acknowledged the many supporters in the room.

A variety of Olympic sports were represented at the lunch, in both Olympian Carbine Club members and past and present Olympians. Carbine Club Members Ken Page, Alan Whelpton, Peter Montgomery, Phil Coles, Doug Donoghue, John Brown, Rob Hirst, Sir James Hardy and Tim Cox were acknowledged with 25 year member badges by Club Chairman, Michael Crismale.

AOC Vice President, Peter Montgomery spoke briefly on the group’s passion for the Carbine Club of NSW and the Clubs contribution to junior Sport. A highlight of the lunch was a $50,000 donation presented to Chef De Mission Kitty Chiller in support of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team. Amy Hetzel interviewed Olympic Water Polo Player, Holly Lincoln-Smith and Selected 2016 Olympic Athletes Josh Clarke (Athletics) and Leilani Mitchell (Basketball). Carbine Club Member and “Walking Sports Almanac” David Morrow also joined the interview panel.

Guests were again entertained by the Brazillian Dance Troupe, with audience participation this time!!!

Two names synonymous with Australian Olympics Laurie Lawrence and Duncan Armstrong provided the entertainment. Both Laurie and Duncan reflected on Duncan’s Gold Medal swim at the 1988 Olympics. Although Duncan’s memory on the record breaking swim was somewhat different to Laurie’s recollection!!!

AFL LUNCHEON – 1 JULY

On Friday July 1 The Carbine Club of NSW hosted its official AFL Lunch in the Ballroom at the Four Seasons Hotel Sydney. Over 380 members and guests celebrated the great game of AFL and the match between the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs This lunch is one of the most popular on our event calendar.

Carbine Club Member Caroline Searcy led the event as MC and Media Personality and Swans number 1 Ticket Holder Adam Spencer acted as Interviewer.

Deputy Chairman Damian Keogh welcomed members and guests and acknowledged the many supporters in the room.

A variety of current and past AFL players and officials were represented at the lunch, as well as both the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs AFL Clubs.

HG Nelson performed his legendary “Season in Review”, encompassing all the happenings from Season 2016 so far. The Club was proud to continue its support of Junior AFL with Deputy Chairman Damian Keogh and Minister for Sport The Hon Stuart Ayres MP presenting $2,500 scholarships to Errol Gulden, from the Swans Academy and Nathan Richards from the GWS Giants Academy.

The Club is also proud to continue its support of the NSW Institute of Sport’s Talent on Tour Program with a $15,000 donation. This donation was accepted by Talent on Tour Athlete and 2016 Rio Olympian Lea Yanitsas.

Adam Spencer was spoilt for choice with interview panels. Firstly, Sydney Swans Senior Coach, John Longmire along with Western Bulldogs legend and current Director of Football Chris Grant, and the Clubs General Manager of Football Graeme Lowe.

Secondly, Sydney Swans star players Lance “Buddy” Franklin and Isaac Heeney. Notably, Heeney being a previous CCNSW Scholarship recipient in 2010.

Both Lea and Isaac expressed their appreciation to members and guests on how much of difference the CCNSW Scholarship had made to them as Athletes. At the time both relying on their parents to get them to training, fund carnivals and attend competitions.

To round out the interviews, the Swans players were joined by Nicola Barr, AFL(NSW/ACT) representative player. A great opportunity to highlight Female AFL in NSW and the inaugural Women’s League in 2017.

Comedian and Swans Ambassador Tommy Dean provided an insight into what an American thinks of Aussie Sport, in particular AFL. A very entertaining outlook.

ANNUAL GOLF DAY – 3 AUGUST

The annual Carbine Club Golf Day was held at the scenic St Michael’s GC on Wednesday 3 August 2016. Disappointingly, due to heavy rain & a flooded course, play was abandoned after just 6 holes.

Fortunately, St Michael’s GC very kindly agreed to reschedule to Wednesday 31 August at no extra cost. This was a terrific gesture by them & greatly appreciated by the golfers. Despite the threat of showers on the rescheduled date, it is pleasing to report that it was a rain-free day. 52 players competed &, as in previous years, the two best stableford scores in each group comprised the team event whilst there were also individual stableford, nearest-to- the-pin & longest drive competitions. The winners are as follows:

Following play, Wests Tigers Director Rick Wayde conducted a Q&A with three former Western Suburbs Rugby League players of the late 1970s – Mick Liubinskas, Ray Brown & Shane Day. They gave a fascinating insight into the Roy Masters/Tom Raudonikis era at the Magpies!

Special thanks to St Michael’s GC’s Robert Travis for his hosting of the day. The Carbine Club is most grateful for his agreeing to reschedule to later in the month after the downpour on 3 August. Thanks also to those Members who donated prizes.

RUGBY UNION – 19 AUGUST 2016

The Carbine Club of NSW in association with FrontRow welcomed over 880 guests to the Australia v New Zealand Rugby Lunch in the Ballroom at The Westin Hotel, Sydney.

Guests were welcomed by FoxSports Nick McCardle and Deputy Chairman Damian Keogh, who acknowledged the partnership between CCNSW and Front Row.

The Club is proud to continue its support of Junior Rugby with Deputy Chairman Damian Keogh and Phil Kearns presenting a $5,000 scholarship to the NSW BlueBelles.

The NSW BlueBelles is a NSW 7s Rugby program aimed at female athletes in three age groups, Baby Belles 1214yrs, Junior (Youth) Belles 15-17yrs and Senior Belles (Open Age).

The Waratah Blue Belles are 2015 National Champions in both Senior and Youth program.

Guests were thoroughly entertained by author, writer, rugby commentator and modern day poet - Mick Colliss.

Mick was also the Vice-Captain of the first ever Australian Sudoku team and travelled to India to compete at the World Sudoku Championships. His recount of his Sudoku achievements had guests totally enthralled.

Guest enjoyed hearing stories about the amazing achievements of Brad Thorn. Brad’s career spanned 21 yrs and two codes (Rugby Union & Rugby League), having played more professional rugby than any other player in history, in two codes and on three continents. Internationally he amassed 59 All Black caps.

Brad was then joined by former Australian Rugby Union player Benn Robinson to discuss the Bledisloe match.

RUGBY LEAGUE GRAND FINAL LUNCHEON – 29 SEPTEMBER

The Carbine Club of NSW in partnership with NRL welcomed over 600 guests to the NRL Grand Final Lunch at The Star, Pyrmont Guests were welcomed by MC Yvonne Sampson along with NRL Chief Executive and CCNSW Member Todd Greenberg. Chairman Michael Crismale, acknowledged the ongoing partnership between CCNSW and the National Rugby League.

The Carbine Club of NSW donated $5,000 to the Volunteer of the Year Award as part of the Annual NRL Community Awards. This valuable donation will provide much needed support to the volunteer and their Rugby League Club in growing junior league within their local community. Congratulations to George ‘Terry’ Abednego from the Zenadth Kes Rugby League. The Clubs donation went directly to the Junior Rugby League Club that Terry represents.

NRL retiring players were acknowledged and presented with their Golden Boot Trophy.

Chairman Michael Crismale acknowledged members Trevor Davis and Ron Coote for their years of service to the Club, 38yrs and 29yrs respectively.

League funny men, Nathan Hindmarsh and Bryan Fletcher thoroughly entertained guests with stories from their former glory days!!!

Members enjoyed post luncheon drinks in the Cherry Bar.

MEMBERS DINNER – 13 OCTOBER

Members and their guests gathered at the newly renovated one hatted Bellevue Hotel, Paddington (owned by fellow member Max Donnelly) for a Members Only dinner. The dinner was not a fundraising event and was kept to Members plus one guest. Members were able to enjoy the company of each other and to hear news from Club members who attended the RIO 2016 Olympics. The dinner was in great hands with Member Rod Tubbs who interviewed John Coates, Peter Montgomery and Matthew Dunn. It was a fun and informative night sharing something only members of this special club of ours can do.

CRICKET LUNCHEON – 18 NOVEMBER 2016

The Carbine Club of NSW welcomed 200 members and guests to the Members Dining Room in the new MA Noble & Don Bradman Stand at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Guests were welcomed by Club Member and MC Caroline Searcy and Chairman Michael Crismale.

The club acknowledged the continued support of member Jamie Barkley and the Sydney Cricket Ground & Sports Trust for their ongoing support of this event.

The Club is proud to continue its support of Junior Sport across many sports and presented scholarship donations of $5,000 to Orienteering NSW, NSW Schoolboys Cricket and promising sailor, Finn Alexander from Australian Sailing.

Interviews with former Australian Test player and FoxSports Presenter Brendon Julian and ICC Hall Of Fame Members Neil Harvey and Alan Davidson provided an insight into both current cricket happenings as well has how the game of cricket has changed over the years.

Authors Sam Perry, Dave Edwards and Ian Higgins shared stories from their book The Grade Cricketer. The Grade Cricketer book is based upon the popular Twitter account, @gradecricketer, which is a frighteningly honest portrayal of amateur cricket.

Guests were thoroughly entertained by former Victorian, South Australian and Australian cricketer Rodney Hogg. In Rod’s own words: “I was there for the 500 to one, I was there for the 43 cans, I was there for the underarm, I was there for the aluminium bat…” Rodney had some fascinating stories and a great sense of humour to match.

MEMBERS LUNCHEON – DECEMBER

The Carbine Club’s member’s end of year luncheon was enjoyed by over 60 members and guests in the Members Pavilion at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.

At this time each year, the Carbine Club of NSW awards the “Davo” award. The DAVO award is in recognition of long and valuable outstanding contribution and service to sport, media and community.

The DAVO award is in recognition of long and valuable outstanding contribution and service to sport, media and community. The award is named in honour of Life Member Alan Davidson for his contribution to the club since its inception and for his standing as a great cricket legend, having been inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2004, and into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2011.

The Club had the honour to present the 2016 DAVO award to Sir Nicholas Shehadie.

Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE ranks amongst the highest achievers In Australian civic and sporting life and is a deserved recipient of the 2016 Carbine Club of NSW DAVO Award.
