Worland letters written to the Warrnambool Standard on the subject of the History of Early Warrnambool. These twelve letters were written weekly in 1943, and I wonder just what remarks Henri would have made on the progress of the last fifty years. There are one or two remarks I would like to follow up regarding two paintings by Thomas Dowling that had been loaned to the state Library and later sent on to America for an art exhibition. Were they ever returned to Warrnambool? 1 am looking forward to meeting Shirley stone, Administrator of the Bendigo Group, who will be in Warrnambool on 6th October. We extend an invitation to any members of the Groups we exchange newsletters with to come and pay us a visit if in Warrnambool at any time. Please let us know in advance and there will be someone in attendance to show you around. All for now, Regards, Marie Boyce * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * THE STORY OF "FARNHAM" From the "Women's Miscellany Column" Warrnambool standard, 17th September, 1920 (Article submitted by Betty Beavis) The story of "Farnham" is an interesting one. It was originally the property of the late Mr Wm Rutledge, one of Australia's earliest pioneers. He had been employed by Lord Farnham, after wham he named his estate. After a short stay in NSW, he drove to this district with his wife and three eldest children, and being greatly taken by the appearance of the country, and its likeness to Ireland, he decided to buy the land extending from the Merri to the Moyne. His greatest difficulty was to get food, and to overcame this he decided to erect extensive stores in Port Fairy - which still remain. "Farnham" was built in the old fashion with upright beams which, in time, were covered with jasmine and clematis. The gardens were the owner's delight, and several gardeners were employed. The stone portion was added much later for the accommodation of young grand-children from India. Mr Rutledge was a generous patron of Christ Church, and the present vicarage was built after the same style and about the same time. The Ven. Archdeacon Beamish, first vicar, was his fellow countryman. As time progressed, Mr Rutledge decided that his children should be educated - the daughters in France, the sons in England. Whilst in the old country for this purpose, he induced same 40 young Irishmen to accompany him when he returned to Australia, and they became successful tenant farmers on his estate. On arrival, he found that his interests were in an sorry condition, through mismanagement in his absence, and he was almost insolvent. When prospects brightened, he acted most honorably towards his creditors. For the convenience of the coaches, Which then were the only means of travelling, he erected commodious stables on his property. In Dr and Mrs Wilson's time, "Farnham" was made most interesting with rich and rare curios, gathered from all parts of the world. These have been brought in to "Ierne", their town residence. Warrnambool Standard, 15th September, 1920 Results of sale at Farnham Park on account ot Mrs A F Wilson - Agent/Auctioneer A P Officer - Buyers - James McCosh, George Arkinson, W McCullagh, M Saltau, Isaac Dixon. Warrnambool Standard of 9 September, 1920, carried a good illustrated advertisement of part of Farnham Estate for sale.
