Special thanks to the major rally promoters Mark and Yvonne of Worldwide Dynamics, and their local sharpshooter Jorge Briones. They brought the bikers back to Hollister again, and it totally rocked ! Literally !

Some awesome Tribute Bands, and some original rock acts were playing all over town, and people were partying everywhere. It was obvious that Chris many came early to have a great time. July is a hot month in Glendale and this day was up to par, but it was hot in activity as well as temperature. Every year the dealer- ship has a motorcycle/car show in the doldrums of summer and it has has morphed into a debut for the year’s Love Ride, of which this will be the 31st iteration on Saturday Oct 18 depart- ing from the usual Sunday schedule. Another change will be that there will be no show at the Glendale dealership in the morning - instead, groups of riders from all the local dealerships will head to the lake directly. Jay Leno will still be the master of ceremonies at Lake Castaic. Check Glendale’s website for updates.

Back to the Summer Rumble. It was very well attended and there was lots going on for what is termed as “just a small affair”, by Oliver the owner.

One feature is a drive in car show that had about 25 or so nice rides from various years all being classics. Of course there is a bike show, while not being big it did have some enviable entrants. The live band featuring a dealership employee kept the audi- ence entertained. There was a lively pinup girl contest with the entrants all being dressed in the pinup era fashion of the day, complete with make up and hair. Speaking of pinups - the more modern variety of pinups - The “Bud Girls” - were on hand for photo ops with the crowd. Adult beverages were served in the restricted area of the very popular beer garden. Lots of Love Ride merchandise was available for purchase by riders in the get ready mode. For a “small show” there was a lot going on and a big crowd to take it all in.

The dealership was open and the a/c was going strong so I wan- dered in occasionally for a cool down. Lots of people inside and the parts counter was as busy as the outside. While Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson lends its support to a num- ber of deserving charitable endeavors, one event in particular stands out as a cause to be supported again each year—The Los Angeles Ride For Autism.

Here is the Mission Statement: The Los Angeles Ride For Autism Foundation is a 100% volunteer group dedicated to raising funds benefiting non-profit entities that are directly involved with the Autism Spectrum Disorder, by organizing motorcycle fun rides in the Southern California area. Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a per- son’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a “spectrum disorder” that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. There is no known single cause of autism, but in- creased awareness and funding can help families today. (web- site quote).

This was the seventh annual ride held to raise funds for vari- ous charities associated with the cause in general. Supported by the Society Of Riders MC, the ride has been fortunate to have a regular celebrity for Grand Marshall in the person of Dean McDermott, and with a quick look on Wiki you will see his long list of credits dating back to 1988 both TV and Film. I would further say the ride is especially very fortunate to have Dean as he is certainly an engaging personality, with ready smile and willing to stop at any moment for that photo opp or brief chat.

As early as 8:30 am coffee and donuts are generously provid- ed by Laidlaw’s for the first arrival registrants. I might add that, thoughtfully, also offered for the more health conscious were fruit and bottled water. At 11:00 it’s kickstands up and Dean, who rides a Ducati, leads the 300-400 or so riders up the coast and through the canyon to the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas where lunch and entertainment were provided. The ride was also escorted by the very capable professional Motor Corps.

The weatherman had forecast predictably hot three digit temps normal for the area in August but someone pulled over a bit of cloud cover and it was actually a mostly comfortable day in the shade being much less than three digits.

If you haven’t been to the Sagebrush Cantina you should put it on a destination ride. It’s a big place with old west motif and large outdoor patio making for a good afternoon stop and it gets quite busy on summer weekends from locals as well as motorcyclists stopping in. Lunch was a variety of Mexican entrees complete with rice and beans and quite good as the Cantina has a great kitchen. The band was really tight and played several entertaining sets with brief breaks. Hikers typically climb to the top of the dunes and slide down slowly, generating a low-frequency rumble that can be both felt and heard. The Kelso Dune complex has some of the highest dunes (600 feet) in the region. It had rained the day prior and the dunes don’t Boom if damp. The drier they are, the bigger they boom. It’s definitely on my bucket list.

Mitchell Caverns -Jack and Ida Mitchell built a road, trails and stairs where they led tours of limestone caverns now called Mitchell caverns. They built a home and permanently live at the caverns. Considering they live in the middle of the desert and the nearest neighbor was 15 miles away, that’s fortitude. Mitchell Caverns is located in the heart of the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area. Spectacular and intricate limestone formations found include; stalagmites, stalactites, helictites, lily pads, draperies, curtains and cave popcorn. The caverns were purchased by the State in 1954 and are the only limestone caverns in the State Park System.

Land Fair road spikes north off Route 66 and is the final leg of my ride. I’m very glad to have topped off the gas tank in Amboy because this next jaunt is miles of barren desert to Nipton. No gas, no food, nobody.

25 years ago, Nipton was virtually abandoned but in 1984, the entire town was purchased for 200 grand by geologist Gerald freemen. He installed solar panels to power the entire town and Wi-Fi. It’s now home to the Hotel Nipton, The El Oasis Café and the Nipton Trading Post. Originally constructed in 1904, Hotel Nipton was restored by Freeman in 1986, and recently refurbished in 2004. This 5 bedroom Hotel is open as a bed-and- breakfast inn to serve visitors of Mojave. This 100 plus year old Hotel was favorite getaway to silent film actress Clara Bow. Room 3 was her room and is a patron favorite. Room 1 is the Train Room, because it facing the train tracks with many windows. I stayed in room 5, the newest additions and wasn’t bothered by the train whistles. There is a Jacuzzi and a pond on the property. A clean, well maintained facility offers a western movie big sky experience. The El Oasis Café food is exemplary and Chef grows their own herbs and uses his mother recipes. The Nipton Trading Post stocks beer, wine and snacks. Nipton also offers tented cabins, roomy enough for a party of six. These Eco-Lodges are designed to provide a comfortable camping experience in the natural desert environment. Each cabin is air-cooled and outfitted with two double beds, a wood-fired stove, electric lights and overhead fan, table and chairs. It’s the “only” hotel within the Mojave National Preserve and is a completely unique and enjoyable experience.

This tattered shamble of unmaintained 66 through the Mojave tells the naked story of the Oakies escaping the Dust Bowl. It’s here you really sense the hope that drove them and hardship they endured. That feeling still prevails on these long lonely miles of unforgiving desert. For me, this ride has been the best of what Route 66 represents and one I will come back and ride again and again. I’ll pass on the fanciful romance of Route 66 and embrace the reality of this road. It’s a story where nature prevails and the best laid plans of men and mice are anecdotes.
