Camelot Heads Irish Derby 11 (cont. from p1) The Curragh's General Manager Paul Hensey is happy with the current conditions and forecast. "We had a nice, dry day yesterday and again today, and I walked the course this morning and was pleasantly surprised how well the track has taken all the rain we've had recently," Hensey explained. "It's yielding-to-soft at the moment, but I'd expect it to have dried to yielding by the end of the day. We'll be watching the forecast closely for the end of the week. We might have light showers on Wednesday, but the key day is Thursday when there is a band of rain moving across and we'll have to see if we get it. The rest of the forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday then looks good." For the first time, the Derby meeting will take place in the evening, with the feature scheduled for 7:40 p.m. "We did extensive promotion on pre-sales and corporate hospitality sold out a month ago, so much so that we created some extra facilities," Hensey added. "So it's very positive from that end of things and advanced ticket sales are well up, but we won't know how we do in terms of crowd until the day itself." SO. HEMISPHERE RESULTS

CHILEAN SELECT SALE WORTH A LOOK by Tom Thornbury, Keeneland’s Associate Director of Sales When we think of wine country in the United States, Napa Valley immediately comes to mind. The innate beauty of Napa Valley evokes a reverence for the land, a dedication to the growing of grapes, the production of high-quality wines, and a devout appreciation for a unique quality of life. Now, think of a Napa Valley about 100 miles wide and 2,700 miles long; bordered by the towering, snow-capped Andes Mountains on one side and the vast Pacific Ocean on the other. This place would be Chile. Not only is Chile a major producer of quality wines, Club Hipico is one of the loveliest old racetracks in but because the soils are mineral-rich, the climate is the world. It has the look and the character of Chantilly, temperate, and the water from the mountains so pure, and it is located in the heart of Santiago, a safe, modern, it is a perfect place to raise most any crop. In addition, and thriving center of business and culture. as Chile is located in the Southern Hemisphere, those Breeding and racing in Chile is serious business. (Writer=s Up cont. from p4) It is notable that, although they have injected a lot of speed into their breed, the Chileans enjoy horses that can run on, stay, and continue to run over many years. They are durable horses and the Chilean trainers are a patient lot, never seeming to drill their horses, but training slowly, introducing ample foundation throughout the campaign. I can highly recommend a trip to Santiago for the Breeders= Sale, July 8. You will find a beautiful, safe city with snow-capped mountains as a backdrop, a magnificent racecourse at Club Hipico, honorable horsemen who speak the same language as you (in every sense of the phrase), and a lovely gathering of high-quality yearlings with unlimited potential. Flights from the U.S. are direct into Santiago and there is an abundance of excellent hotels and restaurants for your enjoyment. A trip to the resort community Vina del Mar, the Casablanca Valley (where numerous wineries are located), or many of the breeding farms are within an hour=s drive of Santiago. There is so much more that Chile has to offer; lakes, glaciers, skiing, fishing, hiking, or hunting--the list goes on and on. It is an extraordinary place with exceptionally warm and friendly people. Recognized as the ASwitzerland@ of South America, you can rely on business being transacted properly and transparently. Should you wish to receive a catalogue or investigate flights, hotels, or any other accommodations, please contact Vicente Aljaro, the managing director of the Criadores (Breeders) Association in Santiago: [email protected] or (56-2) 683-6406 or (56-2) 683-5370.

Oh, and go easy on the APisco Sours.@ You will be kindly offered them continuously. They go down real easy, but they can produce a painful head the next day!

A leap forward for ? by Gary West, espn.com “Kudos to electric green frogs. Who could have imagined they would flush out so many cheaters? Cheaters threaten every sport, of course. And every sport must work relentlessly to identify unscrupulous competitors trying to take an illicit or unethical edge. But the challenge is especially important in horse racing simply because no other sport is so wed to the wager. And probably no sport's cheaters are more culpable, more deserving of ignominy, than horse racing's because they don't stop at bamboozling bettors, which by itself would be despicable enough and, for the sport's popularity, pernicious. But the worst cheaters willingly ignore the welfare of the competitors.” TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 6/26/12 • PAGE 6 of 8 • thoroughbreddailynews.com
