Time allowed—30 minutes.) †5 MS HALL: To move—That this House: (1) notes this is the 90th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign and in doing so remembers our most famous Anzac, Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick; (2) recognises the extraordinary deeds of John Simpson Kirkpatrick who demonstrated courage above and beyond the call of duty when he and his donkeys rescued injured soldiers from the battle fields in Gallipoli; (3) calls for the Government to award a posthumous Victoria Cross to ‘Simpson’ in this year of the 90th anniversary of Gallipoli and in accordance with the wishes of his WW1 Commanding Officers and the many thousands of Australians both young and old who demand this recognition for his acts of bravery; (4) believes it is a travesty of justice that he has been denied the award of the Victoria Cross for all these years; and (5) notes that all Australians would strongly support the posthumous awarding of this honour. This submission provides responses to requests for information, documentation and statistics that were either taken on notice or requested of AEC staff during the Perth and Sydney hearings of the current inquiry, or as subsequent requests through the JSCEM secretariat. Introduction This joint submission represents the formal request to change the name of the Federal Electorate of Batman to Simon Wonga. The name Simon Wonga has been chosen by and formally endorsed by the Wurundjeri Land and Compensation Cultural Heritage Council Aboriginal Corporation (Wurundjeri Council). The name change has formal endorsement from the following local government authorities: 1. Yarra City Council 2. Darebin City Council The joint submitters believe that the timing for the Australian Electoral Commission’s 2017 redistribution process provides an outstanding opportunity to trigger a community discussion about the importance of expanding Aboriginal cultural heritage as a means towards reconciliation.
