  • Early Blues Bibliography
EARLY BLUES BIBLIOGRAPHY In any selection of books the choice must inevitably be subjective as to what to include or exclude. This selection has ommitted some choices that other might have included. Also there are many articles, periodicals and magazines that provide information for the researcher that cannot be included here but are, perhaps, in Robert Ford's 'Blues Bibliography' or Edward Komara's '100 Books Every Blues Fan Should Have'. This selection is based very much on my own collection of books found in markets, second hand book shops but more recently through Amazon and the web site 'Abe Books' Many books are out of print, have reached the third, fourth or later edition but details are included here that will allow the collector to locate and purchase their own choice. I have not sought to comment on the accuracy, usefulness or expertise of each publication and care should be taken on choice of purchase as many are price inflated when a little more research will lead to better value for money. Where possible I have tended to provide details of hard cover books but many are also available in soft cover at a much reduced price. It should also be remembered that any list such as this is out of date the moment that it is produced. New books are regularly published. The University Presses of America provide a sound source of academic work under the general priciple of 'Publish or Perish' which reflects the wide range of books from the very simple history to the in depth difficult to read study of an aspect of my favourite genre of music - The Blues.

  • The Recording Sessions
Bob Dylan: The Recording Sessions by Michael Krogsgaard, compiled from files available at http://www.punkhart.com/dylan/sessions.html 1 2 Some general information regarding the different sources made available for the study: 1. The Columbia Studios Recording Diaries are books, which for each day of the year (since 1941) list every planned session in the different studios. Information includes: time of the day, name of the studio, name of the producer and the engineers and the name of the artist. For the New York studios one diary is missing, that which covers the period January 1967 to December 1970. For the Nashville studios, the diary for the period 1969 to 1971 is missing. 2. Recording Sheets are lists made during each session and put into each tape box. The sheet records the date, the studio, the artist, which tracks were recorded and the CO number (Columbia's own reference number) for each composition (of which, more later). Each recorded take is marked as complete (C), with a short false start(b) or a long false start (B). It is indicated on these sheet which takes are removed to other tapes for further use. 3. The Tape Boxes themselves also usually contain information about each take and which takes are removed for further use. 4. CO Cards contain information about the CO (CO=Columbia) number and title for each composition and usually also the recording date. The CO numbers are basically a secure identification of each composition but they are not always chronological (for instance: the CO numbers for songs recorded in Nashville are generally higher than CO numbers for songs recorded at the same time in New York), and, confusingly, sometimes one composition has several CO numbers, especially (but not always) if it has been recorded several times at different sessions.

Portland’s Independent Music Scene: The Formation of Community Identities and Alternative Urban Cultural Landscapes by Rebecca Elizabeth Ball A thesis submitted in partial requirements for the degree of Master of Urban Studies Thesis Committee: Gerald Sussman, Chair Ellen Bassett Karen J. Gibson Portland State University 2010 Abstract Portland has a rich, active, and fluid music culture which is constantly being (re)created and (re)defined by a loose network of local musicians who write, record, produce, promote, distribute, and perform their music locally (and sometimes regionally, nationally, and internationally) and local residents, or audiences, who engage in local musical practices. Independent (“indie”) local music making in Portland, which is embedded in DIY (do it yourself) values, creates alternative cultural places and landscapes in the city and is one medium through which some people represent themselves in the community.

Page | 1 Housing Handbook 2020–2021 Welcome to Portland State University and to your home for the 20-21 academic year! Whether you are a new or returning student-it is my pleasure to welcome you to our beautiful campus. It will be an academic and engagement experience like you have never seen before. COVID-19 has brought with it many challenges and opportunities to grow as a department to support student success. The health and safety of all residents is the utmost priority of University Housing & Residence Life. Due to the on-going pandemic, our normal operations and services may look different than they have in the past. Please know that we remain open and committed to serving our residential population and that this requires both residents and Housing staff to approach our services through means that support physical distancing measures and other methods to reduce the transmission of COVID-19. This may look like temporary closures or restrictions of common spaces, restricted hours for certain offices, and face coverings requirements while in our residential communities. Our mission is your success. We provide many avenues to become acquainted with people from different backgrounds, provide programs and activities to get involved, and support your academic pursuits through our residential student support programs while in a remote environment. By taking advantage of these opportunities, you will have the chance to grow as a person. Students who report the highest satisfaction on campus are those who engage with their community. Through your active involvement, you can have an impact on the success of your community.
