Typography in Publication Design Innovative applications of Typography Ancient African Typographic Symbols in Contemporary Publication Design Sophia Oduol, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Lesotho, [email protected] Key words: typography, iconology, Ancient African symbols, deciphering and transformation 1. Introduction The awareness of the power of typography in communication can be traced back to the earliest civilizations of mankind when production of type was through scratch marks made on flat surfaces using sharp objects. Twentieth century records show well developed type from Mesopotamia, Chinese calligraphy, Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Phoenician alphabet. How do you make any sense of history, art or literature without knowing the stories and typography of your own culture and all the world's main religions? Polly Toynbee (1947). Contemporary typography is significant because it brings attention to civilization within the African continent. African countries have type and symbols that have been used to communicate written messages. Many of these remain undiscovered by the mainstream theorists. Saki Mafundikwa in his book ‘afrikan alphabets’, has made presentations on African letterforms, and he continues to unearth innovative and little understood symbols. This paper aims to explore how the Ancient African iconology has been reborn in to contemporary typography and is used in today’s publishing. The study is placed in the context of the history, meaning, deciphering and transformation of Typography. A conceptual framework is constructed, based on critical theory from arts disciplines, notably from the history of African Iconography from the Igbos and the Adinkra. This paper also finds that typography has now transformed into informal, colloquial icons, where everyday published communiqué can occur through signs rather than speaking. -

VIRAL ART Exhibition Guide VIRAL ART is an exhibition focusing on this last year and the universal pandemic (COVID-19) which has affected many different aspects of life, one of which is evident in the artistic world. COVID-19 has forced many artists to open up to new avenues of expression in many different disciplines; visual art, music, performing arts, photography, fashion, and literature. Some of the main goals for our exhibition are to bring light to how the pandemic has affected all corners of life, especially in regard to artistic capability/expression, and further, illustrate how certain artists captured the essence and experience of COVID-19. Introduction by Taylor Weaver I wanted to start by saying how grateful I am to have been able to lead this exhibition project with the help of Mirea Suarez. I am so proud of each and every one of the girls and hope you can see how hard they have all worked to make this possible. So welcome to our exhibition which we have titled Viral Art! I would like to note that some of the pieces, such as music are slightly more interactive, for example one of the music pieces is a live DJ set and is an hour and a half in total in the event you are interested in watching more – we will only briefly show certain pieces We would like to preface this exhibition by giving a small dedication to those whose lives have been affected by COVID-19. Despite their popularity because of their production in the local language, Akan Twi, these movies aberrate Ghanaian cultures, especially the arts, customs, lifestyles, background, and habits that characterize the traditional Akan society, which the movies largely portray. Based on qualitative research approach, six Kumawood movies were selected for critical review. The study sought to ascertain how Kumawood movies presented the cultural values of the people. The results indicated that Kumawood movies showcased diverse Akan cultural elements such as proverbs used for ensuring positive moral conducts, welfare, and acquisition of wisdom; rich traditional body adornments; Akan traditional festivals, folksongs, drumming and dancing, games; as well as sense of communal welfare, hospitality and traditional courtesies. -

August 12, 1991 Ghana Government Denies Existence of Political Prisoners Minister Says Detainees "Safer" in Custody Introduction Ghana's ruling Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), chaired by Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings, has claimed -- for the third time in as many years -- that Ghana has no political prisoners. In a radio interview on May 31, Secretary for Foreign Affairs Obed Asamoah, argued that some detainees -- whom he characterized as "subversives" -- are being kept in custody for their own good. He added that if they were brought to trial, they would be convicted and executed. The first claim is deliberately misleading. Africa Watch knows of the existence of a number of detainees incarcerated in Ghana, though it is difficult to estimate the exact number in the light of government denials. One group -- of ten detainees -- was moved to different prisons on the same day -- January 14, 1991. One member of this group is known to have been held without charge or trial since November 1982. Their detentions have never been officially explained. The minister's argument that detainees are better protected in custody amounts to a manifest presumption of guilt, and makes it unlikely that any detainee in Ghana can now receive a fair trial. The government's denial is also contradicted by the publication on May 30 of a list of 76 "political prisoners and other detainees" by the opposition Movement for Freedom and Justice (MFJ). According to the MFJ's information at the time, none of the 76 had been charged or tried. The PNDC Secretary for the Interior, Nana Akuoku Sarpong, has characterized the list as a mixture of "lies and half truths," calculated to discredit the government. -
Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana
Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana Small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs) serve as the main or additional source of income for more than three million Ghanaians and can be broadly categorised into wood forest products, non-wood forest products and forest services. Many of these SMFEs are informal, untaxed and largely invisible within state forest planning and management. Pressure on the forest resource within Ghana is growing, due to both domestic and international demand for forest products and services. The need to improve the sustainability and livelihood contribution of SMFEs has become a policy priority, both in the search for a legal timber export trade within the Voluntary Small and Medium Partnership Agreement (VPA) linked to the European Union Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (EU FLEGT) Action Plan, and in the quest to develop a national Forest Enterprises strategy for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). This sourcebook aims to shed new light on the multiple SMFE sub-sectors that in Ghana operate within Ghana and the challenges they face. Chapter one presents some characteristics of SMFEs in Ghana. Chapter two presents information on what goes into establishing a small business and the obligations for small businesses and Ghana Government’s initiatives on small enterprises. Chapter three presents profiles of the key SMFE subsectors in Ghana including: akpeteshie (local gin), bamboo and rattan household goods, black pepper, bushmeat, chainsaw lumber, charcoal, chewsticks, cola, community-based ecotourism, essential oils, ginger, honey, medicinal products, mortar and pestles, mushrooms, shea butter, snails, tertiary wood processing and wood carving. -
