POSITION: ELECTRICAL/ TECHNICIAN

DEPARTMENT: /TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT WORK SCHEDULE: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday)

The employee works in the construction, maintenance and repair of traffic and electrical building maintenance in City facilities; does related work as required. General supervision is provided by the Traffic Systems Foreman who is directed by the Director of Engineering, Traffic and Inspection Services, or his designee.

DUTIES: (Other duties as assigned) Trouble shoots and repairs electrical breakages in traffic signals; May run underground cables and string overhead wire; Tests, splices and wipe wires and cables; Installs and repairs fluorescent, industrial and general lighting fixtures and connections; Wires buildings and makes additions to existing wiring; Installs and repairs heating, cooling and exhaust systems; Repairs and erects traffic signals; Assists Electrical Inspector on inspections; Performs programming of solid state signal equipment, programmable read-only memory (PROM) and solid timers; MUST ADHERE TO SAFETY REGULATIONS AT ALL TIMES.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; or 2 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from citizens, regulatory agencies, or businesses. .

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply advance mathematical concepts such as exponents, , quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY: Abilities to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the electrical codes, standard practices, tools and terminology of the electrical trade and knowledge of elementary electrical theory is required.

Ability to make repairs to electrical wiring, fixtures and equipment; the ability to work above and on ladders.

Ability to observe proper safety precautions and to establish effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors.

Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana Driver’s Licenses.

Must possess and/or have the ability to possess an International Municipal Signal Work Zone certification; Signal Technician Level 1 certification and Signal Electrician Level 2 Certification within one year and/or next available testing date(s) from date of hire.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to the risk of electrical shock and extreme heat. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions. The employee occasionally is exposed to wet or humid conditions and to fumes or airborne particles. The level in the work environment is usually moderate.
