CONGRATULATING KIYOSHI KEO NAKAMA ON BEING NAMED TO THE SWIMMING HALL OF FAME
WHEREAS Kiyoshi Keo Nakama well known island athlete
from Hawaii in the 1930s and 1940s was recently elected
into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and
WHEREAS Keo who was born and reared in Puunene Maui
and is a graduate of Maui High School represents another
shining example of Local Boy makes good and a tribute
to the people of the State of Hawaii particularly the
County of Maui and
WHEREAS he has joined the company of other great Hawaii
swimmers who have been elected to the Swimming Hall of Fame
such as Duke Kahanamoku Warren Kealoha Ford Konno Yoshinobu
Oyakawa Bill Smith and Soichi Sakamoto and
WHEREAS the former school teacher coach legislator
and community leader will be officially inducted in ceremonies
at Fort Lauderdale Florida on May 16 1975 and
WHEREAS Keo was a threetime varsity performer at Ohio
State University in the early 1940s and captained the Buckeyes
Big Ten and NCAA title teams his last two years and
WHEREAS during his swim career Keo won twentyseven
national championships thirteen NCAA and AAU titles eight
Big Ten titles five Pan American titles and five Australian
titles and
WHEREAS at age fortyone he became the first swimmer
to cross the 27mile Molokai Channel and 73 3egolUtfOtt A0
WHEREAS Keo first began his career as a member of the
3Year Swimming Club in Puunene under Coach Soichi Sakamoto
and
WHEREAS Keo also distinguished himself in baseball
while at the Ohio State University and currently participates
in both baseball and swimming activities and
WHEREAS his example is one that can be admired and sought
after by the youth of today in Hawaii and
WHEREAS his induction into the Swimming Hall of Fame
is a just reward for his many feats and accomplishments as a
swimmer and athlete now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the County of Maui that
it hereby congratulates Keo Nakama on his induction into the
Swimming Hall of Fame an honor reserved to but a few in our
nation and further extends to Keo Nakama recognition for
his many accomplishments in the swimming world and also for
his continuing community involvement as a citizen of our
great state and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution
be transmitted to Kiyoshi Keo Nakama
