2 AUGUST 2016 Highlight of the month Franz Xaver MOZART, Muzio CLEMENTI

Piano

Howard Shelley Sinfonieorchester St Gallen, Howard Shelley

Franz Xaver Mozart was born just four months before the death of his father, Wolfgang Amadeus. A pianist of similarly precocious talent, he nevertheless wrote just two piano concertos: coupled with Clementi’s only surviving essay in the genre, they make a sparkling addition to our Classical Piano series.

CDA68126

Zygmunt STOJOWSKI, Henryk WIENIAWSKI Violin Concertos

Bartłomiej Nizioł BBC Scottish Symphony , Łukasz Borowicz

The music of Zygmunt Stojowski has yet to benefit from the renaissance enjoyed by other Polish composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His violin concerto— enthusiastically received at its premiere—is here revivified alongside Wieniawski’s dazzling Fantaisie in volume 20 of our Romantic Violin Concerto series.

CDA68102

CDA68131

Bernardino de RIBERA (c. 1520-1580) Magnificats & Motets

De Profundis, David Skinner

All that remains of the choirbook in Toledo Cathedral devoted to the works of ‘Bernardinus Ribera’ is a magnificent, mutilated torso. These are premiere recordings of the surviving output of a forgotten figure from sixteenth-century Spain.

AUGUST 2016 3 Highlight of the month Sir Caractacus, Op. 35; Severn Suite, Op. 87

Judith Howarth, Arthur Davies, David Wilson-Johnson, Alastair Miles, Stephen Roberts London Symphony Chorus, London Symphony Orchestra, Richard Hickox

The Richard Hickox Legacy: re-issued from a 1992 recording when Richard Hickox was Associate Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, this Caractacus has much to offer. The piece itself, which Elgar composed for the 1898 Leeds Festival, exudes his power of invention and luminous skills at orchestration, foreshadowing his next project, the masterful ‘Enigma’ Variations.

4 AUGUST 2016 Highlight (1865-1957) of the month Jean SIBELIUS Symphonies Nos 3, 6 & 7 Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä

The long-awaited fnal disc in the Sibelius cycle from Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä is fnally here. The frst disc in the cycle made one Gramophone reviewer speculate about a ‘benchmark cycle for the 21st century’ whilst the second instalment received a Grammy for ‘Best Orchestral Performance’. This fnal disc, with a playing time of 82 minutes, combines the Finnish master’s third symphony, completed in 1907, with his two fnal works in the genre, composed more or less in tandem between 1922 and 1924. Symphony No. 3 in C major is Sibelius’s most classical symphony, a radical change in direction after the opulence of its predecessor. It has been claimed that the mastery of form in its frst movement is comparable only to the greatest Viennese masters. Fifteen years later, Sibelius gave his Symphony No. 6 a refned modal flavouring, likening it to an offering of ‘pure BIS2006 water’. This he followed up immediately with what would become his symphonic swan song – the stern and majestic Seventh Symphony, a one-movement work, frst billed as the ‘Fantasia sinfonica’.

Roma aeterna Giovanni Pierluigi da PALESTRINA: Missa Papæ Marcelli; Tu es Petrus; Gaudent in cœlis; Sicut cervus/Sitivit anima mea; Francisco GUERRERO: Regina cæli; Tomás Luis de VICTORIA: Missa O quam gloriosum; Gaudent in cœlis New York Polyphony, Tim Keeler, Andrew Fuchs, Jonathan Woody The widely acclaimed vocal ensemble New York Polyphony has, on its previous recordings for BIS, focused on Franco-Flemish polyphony, the English Renaissance and Christmas. Each of these discs – highly praised by critics, receiving no less than two Grammy Award nominations – has also included contemporary works, resulting in striking resonances between music BIS2203 from across more than half a millennium. With their new album, Roma aeterna, the ensemble go on a pilgrimage to the ‘Eternal City’, but this time they remain frmly rooted in the 16th century, in works by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Tomás Luis de Victoria. In works scored for four as well as for six voices, the four members of New York Polyphony are variously joined by Tim Keeler, Andrew Fuchs and Jonathan Woody.

Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Three Salzburg Symphonies Haydn Sinfonietta Wien, Manfred Huss Mozart spent two thirds of his life in Salzburg where he composed some 470 of the 626 works listed in the Köchel catalogue. Of some ffty symphonies that we now know he composed, 45 were written before he left Salzburg. The Symphonies in A major, K134 (August 1772) and in G major, K199 (April 1773) are brilliantly written, witty and effective with numerous typically Mozartian features. They are joined here by the last symphony that Mozart composed while still in Salzburg, the Symphony in C major, K338. BIS2218 Originally supplied with a minuet that was later removed from the manuscript score and lost, Manfred Huss has chosen to perform another minuet: K409 (probably composed in 1782).

Jaakko KUUSISTO (b. 1974) Glow Play III for string quartet, Op. 21; Valo (‘Light’) for violin and piano, Op. 23; Play II for violin, viola, cello and piano, Op. 16; Loisto (‘Glow’) for violin and piano, Op. 12; Jurmo for piano solo, Op. 31 Jaakko Kuusisto, Riitta-Liisa Ristiluoma, Jan-Erik Gustafsson, Heini Kärkkäinen, Paavali Jumppanen, Meta4 String Quartet The present disc features different facets of Jaakko Kuusisto's production in the feld of chamber music: Loisto is a ballade composed for his own instrument, the violin; Play II and Play III offer opportunities for the spirited BIS2192 musicianship of his close performer colleagues. Joining Kuusisto himself on the disc are some of the fnest instrumentalists of Finland, including the dedicatees of two of the recorded works: the Meta4 string quartet, and the pianist Paavali Jumppanen, who has also written the insightful liner notes.

Brett DEAN (b. 1961) Shadow Music Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Brett Dean Brett Dean's Shadow Music is, according to the composer himself, ‘in no way consciously descriptive’, but in its three movements can be heard realisations in sound of various concepts and defnitions of the word shadow. Short Stories is inspired not by specifc texts, but by the literary genre which in a highly condensed form depicts the variety of life. The fve brief pieces carry titles which allow the listener to give his own imagination free rein. Testament BIS2194 has a more specifc inspiration – Beethoven’s famous Heiligenstadt Testament in which the composer bemoans his encroaching deafness. The work is here preceded by Dean’s arrangement of the Adagio from Beethoven’s frst Razumovsky quartet, composed some four years after the Heiligenstadt crisis.

Carl Philipp Emmanuel BACH (1714-1788) Solo Keyboard Music, Vol. 31 Sonatas from Collections 1 & 2 ‘für Kenner und Liebhaber’; Erste Sammlung: Sonata No. 1 in C major, Wq 55/1 (H 244); Sonata No. 2 in F major, Wq 55/2 (H 130); Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Wq 55/3 (H 245); Sonata No. 5 in F major, Wq 55/5 (H 243); Zweyte Sammlung: Sonata No. 1 in G major, Wq 56/2 (H 246); Sonata No. 2 in F major, Wq 56/4 (H 269); Sonata No. 3 in A major, Wq 56/6 (H 270) BIS2131 Miklós Spányi More or less three-quarters of the way through his series of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s music for solo keyboard, Miklós Spányi has arrived at some of the composer’s most celebrated works – the six collections published between 1779 and 1787 ‘für Kenner und Liebhaber’. ‘One of the most needed and important recording projects in progress today’ (Gramophone).

AUGUST 2016 5 Zdenìk FIBICH (1850–1900) Nevìsta messinská, 'The Bride of Messina' Lucia Cervoni, Thomas Florio, Richard Samek, Noa Danon, Johannes Stermann, Martin-Jan Nijhof, Manfred Wulfert, Hale Soner Opernchor des Theaters Magdeburg, Magdeburger Philharmonie, Kimbo Ishii 777981-2 Zdenìk Fibich is regarded as the most signifcant Czech composer of the Romantic era. While respecting Schiller’s compositional model of 'tragedy with choruses' he weaves highly effective choral scenes with compelling and psychologically accurate characters and situations.

Georg Philipp TELEMANN Trios pour le Dessus de Viole

Hamburger Ratsmusik, Simone Eckert 777968-2 This recording represents the frst complete documentation of these trio sonatas with the oboe and recorder in supporting roles – works about which Telemann experts and current scholarship have yet to explore.

Max REGER (1873-1916) Sonatas for Violin solo, Op. 42

Ulf Wallin 777762-2 Max Reger’s Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 42 conclude this complete recording of his violin oeuvre. Opus 42 represents a supreme challenge for the Swedish violinist Ulf Wallin, both technically and musically. It is not without reason that Reger is strongly associated with 'chromatic polyphony.'

Carlo FARINA Consort Music, Dresden 1627

Accademia del Ricercare, Pietro Busca 555034-2 Some musicologists continue to regard Carlo Farina as music history’s frst composer of programme music because of the Capriccio stravagante, his most famous work. However, the great expressive variety and the sumptuous, fnely constructed textures of other works enlarge our picture of this composer, who was much more multifaceted than the remarkable Capriccio stravagante might lead us to believe.

Friedrich GERNSHEIM Symphonies 2 & 4

Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Mainz, Hermann Bäumer 777848-2 Following the successful release of the frst volume of Gernshiem’s work (Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3) CPO now present volume 2 - Symphonies Nos. 2 and 4. Passages of this new CD suggest a Brahmsian influence - Gernsheim has come to be regarded as one of the important romantic symphonists after Mendelssohn and Schumann.

Heinrich von HERZOGENBERG: String Quartet, Op. 42 : String Quartet, Op. 51

Minguet Quartett 777084-2 This month marks the conclusion of the string quartet series forming part of our magnifcently dimensioned Herzogenberg edition. The long-awaited Vol. 3 brings together the three masterpieces constituting his Op. 42 and showing him at the height of his compositional powers. The String Quartet in C minor Op. 51 by his idol Johannes Brahms then rounds off the recording.

Anton BRUCKNER The Complete Symphonies & Bonus DVD 'Venzago's Bruckner'

Mario Venzago, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Northern Sinfonia, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Berner Symphonieorchester, Konzerthausorchester Berlin Mario Venzago opposes the heavy, pathos-laden, slow sound of many current interpretations. His work with 555023-2 different ensembles aims to emphasise the depth of variety in Bruckner’s oeuvre, while the accompanying flm documentation, Venzago’s Bruckner is an original, and visionary look at a classical composer, and – subtly and authentically captured by Laurent Jaquet – the portrait of an observant, questing conductor.

6 AUGUST 2016 Mariss Jansons conducts: Emmanuel CHABRIER: Espana - Rhapsodie für Orchester George GERSHWIN: Rhapsody in Blue für Klavier und Orchester George ENESCU: Rumänische Rhapsodie A-Dur, Op. 11 No. 1 Maurice RAVEL: Rapsodie espagnole Franz LISZT: Ungarische Rhapsodie No. 2 Denis Matsuev, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Mariss Jansons

This latest CD from BR KLASSIK contains fve great rhapsodies, devised and elaborated by very different 900146 composers from different regions, with a lot of imagination and local flavour. The Russian pianist Denis Matusev, winner of the 1998 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, proves a stylistically confdent interpreter of George Gershwin’s concertante masterpiece.

CR4012-2 Franz LISZT (1811-1886) Grande Fantaisie Symphonique (Fantaisie on Berlioz’s ‘Lélio’); Totentanz, G.46

Daria Telizyn Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, Igor Blazhkov CR4012-6 This exciting record is unique in that it presents the absolute world-première recording of a magnifcent major work for piano and orchestra by Franz Liszt – long unknown to performers and record companies alike because it remained unpublished until 1981.

AUGUST 2016 7 Vykintas BALTAKAS (b. 1972) b(ell tree) Various Artists 0015004KAI Vykintas Baltakas’ new album will arouse interest by analytical and also programmatical listeners. The piece Pasaka retells the mythological version of genesis and (co)ro(na) represents a fully composed fermata. Baltakas is successful in turning enigmas of musical aesthetics into tones and creates a musical experience which is both diversifed and homogeneous at the same time.

Roman HAUBENSTOCK-RAMATI (1919-1994) Konstellationen Klangforum Wien, Vera Fischer Haubenstock-Ramati connects to his musical predecessors as much as he surpasses them. Though dodecaphony does play a noticeable role in his way of thinking, by trespassing its rules he proves his artistic and conceptual 0015003KAI independence. His graphic notation transfers an extraordinary amount of responsibility to the performers, inspiring the musicians of Klangforum to an amazing interpretation.

Reinhard FUCHS (b. 1974) Mania Klangforum Wien, ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Anna Maria Pammer, Sylvain Cambreling, Beat Furrer, Johannes Kalitzke 0015001KAI This record presents four major works by young Austrian composer Reinhard Fuchs. Set in an aesthetic world influenced by Guiseppe Ungaretti, David Lynch and Jackson Pollock, and by the structural idea of a palimpsest, each work has its own character but is related to the other pieces on the record. Klangforum Wien’s outstanding performance in the opener Mania (inspired by Lynch’s Blue Velvet) gives it a haunting intensity.

Gérard GRISEY (1946-1998) Les Espaces Acoustiques Garth Knox, Asko Ensemble, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Stefan Asbury

The Acoustic Spaces cycle, begun in 1974 and completed in 1985, consists of six instrumental works that may be played consecutively, since each acoustic space extends the previous one. The unity of the whole is based on the 0012422KAI formal similarity of the pieces and on the two acoustic points of reference: the overtone spectrum and periodicity. Kairos’ best-selling and ground-breaking recordings, originally released in 2005, are here re-issued.

WEBER, SCHUMANN, BRAHMS, BERG Chamber Music Anatoly Kamyshev, Andrey Gavrilov, Ivan Monighetti Melodiya presents a record of chamber music by German composers performed by leading Russian musicians of the 1980s: Anatoly Kamyshev, Andrei Gavrilov and Ivan Monighetti. The romantic virtuosity of Carl Maria von Weber’s MELCD 1002242 Grand Duo Concertant is followed by the turbulent, riotous spirit of . The trio by Johannes Brahms for clarinet, cello and piano, suggesting the melancholy of parting, pre-empts the closing clarinet pieces by Alban Berg, which, with all their musical expressivity, show a solid bond with the German romantic tradition.

Frédéric CHOPIN (1810-1849) Irina Chukovskaya – Chopin Irina Chukovskaya Melodia Records presents an album of Frédéric Chopin’s works performed by Irina Chukovskaya, winner of the Chopin MELREC 1002434 International Competition in Warsaw in 1980. This recording includes the early Variations brillantes and Bolero, Op. 19, one of the frst works composed in Paris. A quite different side of Chopin’s music is represented with lyrical dance miniatures such as the mazurkas of 1845 and 1846: Opp. 59 and 63. Scherzo No. 4 and the tragic Ballade No. 4 closes the album.

SAMONOV, TAKTAKISHVILI, DENISOV, PROKOFIEV, TSYBIN Russian Dreams Irina Stachinskaya, Phillip Moll Melodia Records presents a new album by young and talented Russian flautist Irina Stachinskaya. The programme of MELREC 1002443 Russian Dreams is made up of works for flute and piano by Russian composers of the 20th century. The chamber works are performed by Irina Stachinskaya and Phillip Moll, known principally for his collaboration with flautist Sir James Galway, with whom he has worked as ensemble partner for more than forty years.

8 AUGUST 2016 Leopold MOZART (1719-1787) Serenata in D major, LMV VIII:9; Concerto in E-flat major, LMV IX:9; Sinfonia in G major (‘Neue Lambacher’), LMV VII:G16 Aljoscha Zierow, Fabrice Millischer, Carsten Duffin, Philipp Römer, Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic, Reinhard Goebel OC1844 The compositional production of Leopold Mozart has only been handed down in fragments. In Salzburg, where he lived from 1738 until his death, only sacred compositions by him are preserved in the Cathedral library. His œuvre is thus – seriously decimated – only preserved in ‘secondary sources’ from South German-Austrian monasteries and libraries of the nobility. In the recording presented by the Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie under Reinhard Goebel, one can gain an overall impression of the composer’s work.

Max REGER (1873-1916) Integrale Kammermusik für Klarinette Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in B-flat major, Op. 107; Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in A-flat major, Op. 49 No. 1; Tarantella for Clarinet and Piano; Work without Opus Number II/12; Album Leaf for Clarinet and Piano; Work without Opus Number II/13; Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet in A major, Op. 146; Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in F-sharp minor, Op. 49 No. 2 Stephan Siegenthaler, Kolja Lessing, Leipzig String Quartet OC1845 100 years after Max Reger’s death, and following the conclusion of the complete organ works with Bernhard Buttmann, Oehms Classics proudly presents another complete edition – Max Reger’s works for the clarinet.

Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897) Sonata for Piano in F minor, Op. 5; Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, Op. 9; Scherzo in E-flat minor, Op. 4 Gabriele Carcano Gabriele Carcano spent a long time thinking about and planning the programme of his recorded debut. Beyond OC1850 question, the Variations, Op. 9 on a Theme by Schumann had to be included. ‘I absolutely wanted to record them, because this work is so personal and so many reference points are contained within it’ – especially the composer’s proximity to Schumann and his predilection for the variation genre. This exclusively Brahms programme is framed by the Sonata, Op. 5 and the Scherzo in E-flat minor, Op. 4.

AUGUST 2016 9 Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Die Entführung aus dem Serail Transcription for Harmoniemusik La Scintilla dei Fiati In 1984 Bastiaan Blomhert came across an unusually interesting manuscript in the Princely Fürstenberg Archive SM244 in Donaueschingen. Blomhert’s exhaustive comparison with the working methods of important arrangers, working around the same time as Mozart, did not reveal any compelling correlations, and his hunch – that the Donaueschingen Harmoniemusik was in fact a lost transcription of Entführung aus dem Serail, made by Mozart himself – has since achieved broad consensus amongst researchers. La Scintilla dei Fiati presents a recording of this manuscript.

Sir Edward ELGAR Elgar Remastered By Lani Spahr

A unique opportunity awaits the musician and listener with an interest in historical performance, and Elgar’s Cello Concerto in particular. Our new release this month makes available valuable pressings from Sir Edward Elgar’s personal library. This veritable Aladdin’s Chest belongs to Arthur Reynolds, a keen collector of original SOMMCD 261-4 Elgar recordings and photographs. The only person allowed access to Elgar’s library was the musician and master recording engineer of historic reissues, Lani Spahr.

François COUPERIN (1668-1733) Les Nations: Sonates et suites de symphonies en trio And other pieces for Two Harpsichords, Volume Two

Emer Buckley, Jochewed Schwarz

François Couperin confessed that he preferred to perform his two collections of chamber music – the Concerts Royaux and Les Nations – on two harpsichords. Astonishingly, that suggestion has had to wait until now to be taken TOCC0258 up in recordings. In this second volume, two suites from Les Nations and movements from the Concerts Royaux are presented with a number of his Pièces de clavecin, also in rarely heard realisations for two harpsichords.

Bernard ROSE (1916-96) Music for Choir and Organ Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Ene Salumäe, Gregory Rose This album marks the centenary of Bernard Rose, one of the mainstays of English choral music in the second half of the twentieth century. His compositions occupy an honourable place within the mainstream of the cathedral tradition, being both grounded in the past and leaning gently into the future, and speaking its language of TOCC0307 stylistic restraint and understated passion. This recording has especial authority: sung by one of Europe’s leading vocal ensembles, it is conducted by the composer’s son, Gregory Rose, and makes a good number of his works available for the frst time.

Emil TABAKOV (b. 1947) Complete Symphonies, Volume One Five Bulgarian Dances; Symphony No. 8

Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Emil Tabakov TOCC0365 Emil Tabakov is active as both composer and conductor. Writing primarily for large forces, he now has nine symphonies to his name, each one exploring the darker side of the human spirit. In the atmospheric and expansive Symphony No. 8 (2007–9), the dynamism suppressed in the frst two movements is released in a cathartic discharge of energy in the fnale. The ebullient Five Bulgarian Dances provide a complete contrast, taking Balkan folk-rhythms as the basis for their pile-driving vigour. Both works receive their frst recordings here.

Beat FURRER (b. 1954) Works for Choir and Ensemble …Cold and calm and moving; Voices – Still; Enigma I-VI Helsinki Chamber Choir, Uusinta Ensemble, Nils Schweckendiek The music of Beat Furrer has long attracted attention for its subtle exploration of the possibilities of the human TOCC0360 voice. His six enigmas, a cycle of a cappella settings of Leonardo da Vinci, demonstrate a striking emotional range, from rich, almost Romantic tonal warmth to dramatic avant-garde expressionism. This is the frst recording of the six enigmas and of voices – still for mixed choir and ensemble, which sets Virgil in the original Latin and in Furrer’s own German translation.

10 AUGUST 2016 Gustav MAHLER (1860-1911) The 9 Symphonies Bamberger Symphoniker, Jonathan Nott

Jonathan Nott and his Bamberger Symphoniker have added a new chapter to the performance history of Mahler’s symphonies. In every respect, the conductor’s individual stamp and the orchestra’s characteristic sound do justice to this symphonic universe. These dedicated artists master the orchestral virtuosity and the fne-tuned TUD1670 inner structures, as well as the great dramatic outbursts in the monumental sections. The recording breathes new life into Gustav Mahler’s visions, his creativity, inner conflicts, yearning and joyful music-making.

(12 Hybrid SACDs) (1797-1828) Symphonies 1-8 Dialogue & Epilogue Works by BERIO, HENZE, MANTOVANI, REIMANN, RIHM, SCHNEBEL, SCHWERTSIK, WIDMANN, ZENDER

Bamberger Symphoniker, Jonathan Nott TUD1610

The present recording of Franz Schubert’s Symphonies is based on the text of the New Schubert-Edition and includes a two-disc collection of works that hold a mirror to the great romantic’s oeuvre. ‘Nott, as always, keeps a tight hold on the reins while expressing his convictions with a conviction that is sure to win you over’ – Gramophone. (4 Hybrid SACDs & 2 CDs)

Bernd Alois ZIMMERMANN (1918-1970) Sinfonie in einem Satz (First Version) WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Peter Hirsch Bernd Alois Zimmerman was drafted into the army in 1939 and served for three years before being discharged because of chronic skin problems as a result of exposure to poison. This experience, his analysis of the war, WER 73402 and the phenomenon of time, characterizes an oeuvre that developed in a startlingly short period of time. The works compiled on this CD emphasize, in a richly varied manner, Zimmermann’s conception of music as the ultimate ‘art of time’. They include: Sinfonie in einem Satz, the ballet suite Giostra Genovese, Musique pour les soupers du Roi Ubu and the Concert for String Orchestra.

Morton SUBOTNICK (b. 1933) Music for the Double Life of Amphibians Landmark Recordings Joan la Barbara, Juilliard String Quartet, Joel Krosnick, Calarts Twentieth Century Players, Erika Duke, Dane Little, Morton Subotnick, Stephen l. Mosko WER 73122 The works compiled on this CD form part of Morton Subotnick’s larger work Music for the Double Life of Amphibians, conceived as a symphonic poem, the title of which can be understood as a metaphor: ‘The metaphor suggests that the ‘doubleness’ of the amphibians, needing its past-present environment (the water) while reaching for a new present-future world (the air), is our ‘doubleness’’ – Morton Subotnick.

Anthony CHEUNG (b. 1982) Dystemporal Talea Ensemble, James Baker, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Susanna Mälkki, Anthony Cheung This recording brings together six works written over a seven-year period by the American composer Anthony WER 73432 Cheung. The bookends, SynchroniCities and Dystemporal, are the most recent, from 2012, and are the largest in instrumentation, scale, musical and extra-musical ambition. The other works were written during a period (2005-2008), which were especially formative for Cheung, full of new discoveries, reassessments, and uncertainties, yet yielding the language that has come to resemble his own.

The earliest is the joyful, ebullient Suite Des cloches sonores, Op. 10 which covers a wide expressive range GP706 including use of the melancholy Romanian song, the doina.
