2004 HOMECOMING A TRIBUTE TO FRIENDS From the President

ecently I had the opportunity to address the Class of 2004 at the Commencement cerem o n y . To the graduates and their families, I shared a message outlining three critical components for a successful life — focus, follow through and faith. HRo w e v e r , those same tenets can also relate to the life of Baptist University. FOCUS relates to goal setting, but it is truly much more. I would liken it to “run n i n g the good race.” Consider the Founding Fathers. In 1960, their focus was directed toward the establishment of a college in Houston, , founded upon Christian principles with a mandate for academic excellence. FOLLOW THROUGH speaks to dedication. It is that personal desire to understand the significance of each day. How often have you heard some version of the axiom “take every day … a day at a time?” Forty years ago, when the faculty, staff and students walked onto the campus for the first time, they were pioneers in education, investing their talents and energies in the life of this new college. The commitment of the founding trustees, faculty, staff, students and community leaders was a testament of FAITH as demonstrated in our cornerstone John 14:6. It was their belief in His word and their passion that led them to invest their lives in the faith of the future. Today we are the beneficiaries of that investment with more than 13,150 graduates to count our own. As you’ll see in this issue of the Ne w s , there is a special group that is integral to a meaningful life ... FRIENDS. From the friendships that are renewed at Homecoming to the numerous friends acknowledged in our tributes and list of donors, it is the essence of a meaningful relationship that gives the University its heart and soul. Our talented faculty and staff, dedicated trustees, supportive community leaders, caring alumni and pa r ents, and dynamic students come together in unique and meaningful ways to forge lasting friendships. The pages of the News may remind you of friends from the past or introduce you to new friends and opportunities. We invite you to review your friendship with HBU. As Houston’s Blessed University, when we count our blessings we are thankful for you ... our friends!
