Devised around the runway used for takeoff by the pioneers of civil aviation, La Piste des Géants comprises several facilities: Les Jardins de la Ligne, open in June 2017, a large landscaped itinerary evoking the lands over which the pioneers of La Ligne flew; La Halle de La Machine, a contemporary structure that houses La Machine Street Theatre Company’s ‘Bestiary’ since November and L’Envol des Pionniers, in the site’s rehabilitated historic buildings. In order to do honour to and make known the amazing saga of Toulouse that witnessed the birth of civil aviation with the first flight by Latécoère which took off from Toulouse-Montaudran, then L’Aéropostale and finally Air France, Jean-Luc Moudenc, Mayor of Toulouse, President of Toulouse Métropole, wished to have the historical buildings around the legendary runway rehabilitated. In partnership with the Pioneers’s descendants and many associations, L’Envol des Pioneers, a facility dedicated to the story of aeronautics, was created and was inaugurated on 20 December 2018, 100 years almost to the day after the inaugural flight to Barcelona. -
South America and Antarctica 1993
DAVID SHARMAN South America and Antarctica 1993 Thanks are due to Marcelo Scanu, Gerhard Feichtenschlager, Pavle Kozjek and Franci Savenc for their invaluable contributions. Most of the activity this year has continued to centre on the developed countries of Argentina and Chile where an increasing number of teams are producing committing big-wall routes in a variety of styles. In Peru the situation continues to improve, with Slovenians notably active this summer. Venezuela Aratitiyope Paul Ridgeway, Todd Skinner, Paul Piana and a camera crew made a difficult approach through jungle to attempt the second ascent of Boivin's 1984 route up a prominent rib on the right side of the 600m E face of this flat-topped tower. Peru - Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash Both the weather and the security situation were considerably more set tled in Peru this year with New Zealand climbers returning to the Huay huash after a long absence following the 1988 shootout. They made an attempt on the W face of Yerupaja, stopping just short of the summit. Slovenians dominated the new route scene in the Blanca where general levels of activity continued to rise. Artesonraju (6025m) On 9July 1993 Tomo Sbrizaj and Sebastian Semrajc climbed the SE face via a direct line up the triangular rock buttress to a junction with the normal route. On 18 July they returned with Borut Naglic and repeated the route, Triangle, continuing to the summit (TD+ 60°- 85° III 600m). Andre Kecman and Dusan Kosir climbed the snowy SW face through seracs on the left side but it is not clear how this differs from' previous ascents of this face. -

STUDY GUIDE the Little Prince
Jr. The Little Prince By Rick Cummings and John Scoullar Based on the book STUDY by Antoine de Saint-Exupery GUIDE Synopsis During their two weeks together in the desert, the mysterious and regal Little Prince tells a world-weary Aviator about his adventures through the galaxy, including how he met the Lamplighter, the Businessman, and the Geographer; and about his strained relationship with a very special flower on his own tiny planet. From each experience the Little Prince gained a unique insight, which he in turn shares with the Aviator: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.” Ultimately, the Little Prince and the Avia- tor return home—each with a new understanding of how to laugh, cry, and love again. Children and Grown-ups Discussion: The Little prince says that the aviator at first “talks just like the grown-ups.” What are the differences between grown-ups and children? Why might the aviator miss be- ing a boy? Other Worlds Objective: Students use imagination to create other worlds. Discussion: The Little Prince has come from another planet. What do you think his planet is like? If you could create a planet, how would people there live? What would they eat? How is it different from Earth? What would they travel in? How long would it take to get here? Activity: Have students think of a name for their planet. Have them explain why they gave it that name. Using paper mache and paints, have students make a model of their planet or make a model of the spaceship they would use to travel to Earth. -

The theme of aviation and the character of a pilot are the main elements of Saint-Exupery’s poetics. Being a professional pilot he described true events and created a heroic and mainly mythologized character of a pilot. In his works there are such functions of a cultural hero as fighting with nature or mythical beasts, breaking new ways, formation of human society. There are also motifs of initiation, magic transition to another world, death and rebirth. Such archetypic spaces as desert, night, sky/earth are connected with the character of a pilot. Doctoral Dissertations. 1161. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/1161 Notions of Self and Nation in French Author-Aviators of World War II: From Myth to Ambivalence Christopher Steven Kean, PhD University of Connecticut, 2016 The traditional image of wartime aviators in French culture is an idealized, mythical notion that is inextricably linked with an equally idealized and mythical notion of nationhood. The literary works of three French author-aviators from World War II – Antoine de Saint- Exupéry, Jules Roy, and Romain Gary – reveal an image of the aviator and the writer that operates in a zone between reality and imagination. The purpose of this study is to delineate the elements that make up what I propose is a more complex and even ambivalent image of both individual and nation. Through these three works – Pilote de guerre (Flight to Arras), La Vallée heureuse (The Happy Valley), and La Promesse de l’aube (Promise at Dawn) – this dissertation proposes to uncover not only the figures of individual narratives, but also the figures of “a certain idea of France” during a critical period of that country’s history.
