XM Celebrates Black History Month with Interviews, Music Specials, Facts and Features

ANNUAL DEDICATION RUNS 350 HOURS ACROSS 19 CHANNELS

Washington D.C., January 30, 2003 -- XM Satellite Radio, America's leading satellite radio service, will broadcast its annual celebration of Black History Month with some 350 hours of programming across 19 channels in February, featuring music from Ragtime to Jazz to Gospel to Hip Hop and specials on the contributions of African-Americans in a wide variety of fields.

Programming highlights include exclusive interviews with two of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen and with singer- songwriter Donal Lease; vignettes on important figures in African-American history; specials on African Americans' impact on the cultural development of many U.S. cities, Haile Selassie and the Rastafarian movement, Jamaican- born Marcus Garvey and the many reggae songs about him, and the banjo's African origins; and African and African-American stories and folk tales.

"African-Americans have had a huge impact on all aspects of American life, from music to politics, culture, sports and technology," said XM Vice President Steve Harris. "In its second annual Black History Month tribute, XM is proud to celebrate those contributions and their impact with a vast range of original interviews, music specials and factual features, using many of our 101 channels to educate and enlighten our subscribers."

1 Channel 4, The 40s - Broadcast vignettes from the 40s-era musical greats including Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Channel 9, The 90s - Vignettes featuring African-American artists from the 90s. Channel 40, - BBC Concerts from BB King, Robert Cray, Chuck Berry, Richie Havens, Bob Marley, Buddy Guy, Buddy Miles, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone.

Channel 15, The Village - Donal Lease: "Lease on Life": The African-American singer-songwriter with Odetta John White Sr. & Jr. shares is 40-plus year career, from the early years in the New York Village scene to performing at legendary DC clubs Shadows and Cellar Door to his working with Roberta Flack. Channel 28, On Broadway - Hourly tributes to African-American performers and shows. Channel 61, The Flow - A special celebrating the spirit and life of Fela Kuti, encompassing a history of Fela's life, an exploration of his music and its African and Black influences, and how his Afro beat revolution continues through his son. Channel 64, The Groove - A six-part special on Message Songs. Channel 71, Watercolors - Four one-hour shows looking at some of the African-American masters who helped to shape today's jazz artists and their music. Channel 72, Beyond Jazz - Deep conversations with influential African-American modern jazz artists. Channel 101, The Joint - The influence of Bob Marley on Black Consciousness worldwide. Channel 101, The Joint - The rebel spirit of Peter Tosh, the first musician to sing a song against Apartheid. Channel 101, The Joint - The first major Black third-world film, "The Harder They Come," and its effect on Black films. Channel 60, Soul Street - Exclusive interviews with Col. Harry Sheppard and Col. Bill Holloman, two of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, who tell what it was like to be aviation pioneers. Channel 101, The Joint - The Life and Worldwide influence of Jamaican-born Marcus Garvey and the many reggae songs about him. Channel 101, The Joint - The rebel spirit of Peter Tosh, the first musician to sing a song against Apartheid.
