Original Research A CHECKLIST OF THE NON -A C A RINE A R A CHNIDS (CHELICER A T A : AR A CHNID A ) OF THE DE HOOP NA TURE RESERVE , WESTERN CA PE PROVINCE , SOUTH AFRIC A Authors: ABSTRACT Charles R. Haddad1 As part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA) in conserved areas, arachnids Ansie S. Dippenaar- were collected in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The Schoeman2 survey was carried out between 1999 and 2007, and consisted of five intensive surveys between Affiliations: two and 12 days in duration. Arachnids were sampled in five broad habitat types, namely fynbos, 1Department of Zoology & wetlands, i.e. De Hoop Vlei, Eucalyptus plantations at Potberg and Cupido’s Kraal, coastal dunes Entomology University of near Koppie Alleen and the intertidal zone at Koppie Alleen. A total of 274 species representing the Free State, five orders, 65 families and 191 determined genera were collected, of which spiders (Araneae) South Africa were the dominant taxon (252 spp., 174 genera, 53 families). The most species rich families collected were the Salticidae (32 spp.), Thomisidae (26 spp.), Gnaphosidae (21 spp.), Araneidae (18 2 Biosystematics: spp.), Theridiidae (16 spp.) and Corinnidae (15 spp.). Notes are provided on the most commonly Arachnology collected arachnids in each habitat. It has continued without cessation to the present time and probably will continue as long as the human race persists. It is because of the fact that both man and certain insect species constantly want same things at the same time. To control these insect pests, man has evolved various methods and the most commonly used technique has been the application of chemicals (insecticides). The use of insecticides against the insect pests is not new, as man very likely employed chemicals for the control of insects before he learned to write. Since then, the magnitude of production of these chemicals is increasing day by day. Presently, the indiscriminate and extensive use of insecticides on one hand solves a problem but on the other hand it creates many crises such as their residual effects, possible hazards to non-target organisms, and most importantly the development of resistance against concerned insecticides. -

A revision of the spider genus Macopaeus (Araneae : Salticidae) F. R. Wanless Department of Zoology, British Museum (Natural History) Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD Introduction The genus Macopaeus Simon, 1900 formerly included three species. The type species M. spinosus Simon belongs in the subfamily Lyssomaninae and is clearly related to Asemonea O. P. -Cambridge and Pandisus Simon. The original description of M. spinosus was based on a female, but Simon (1900) did not indicate the number of specimens examined. A female type specimen was examined by Roewer (1965) who diagnosed the genus but did not provide a description of the species. Despite the fact that this specimen has been subsequently lost and that the epigyne has never been figured, the spines on leg I are arranged in a distinctive manner and it is possible to identify the species with reasonable certainty. The other two species M. madagascarensis Peckham & Peckham from Madagascar, and M. celebensis Merian from Celebes are not related to M. spinosus, but belong in the genus Brettus Simon which has recently been revised by the author (Wanless, 1979). In the present paper Macopaeus is redefined; M. spinosus, Brettus celebensis comb, n., and B. madagascarensis comb, n., are described and figured; and a neotype is designated for M. spinosus. The measurements were made in the manner described by Wanless (1978). Genus MACOPAEUS Simon Macopaeus Simon, 1900 : 381. Huber* Zoological Research Institute and Museum Alexander Koenig, Adenauerallee 160, 53113 Bonn, Germany (Received 7 June 2004; revised 25 November 2004; accepted 29 November 2004) ABSTRACT The renaissance of interest in sexual selection during the last decades has fuelled an extraordinary increase of scientific papers on the subject in spiders. Research has focused both on the process of sexual selection itself, for example on the signals and various modalities involved, and on the patterns, that is the outcome of mate choice and competition depending on certain parameters. Sexual selection has most clearly been demonstrated in cases involving visual and acoustical signals but most spiders are myopic and mute, relying rather on vibrations, chemical and tactile stimuli. This review argues that research has been biased towards modalities that are relatively easily accessible to the human observer. Circumstantial and comparative evidence indicates that sexual selection working via substrate-borne vibrations and tactile as well as chemical stimuli may be common and widespread in spiders. Pattern-oriented research has focused on several phenomena for which spiders offer excellent model objects, like sexual size dimorphism, nuptial feeding, sexual cannibalism, and sperm competition. The accumulating evidence argues for a highly complex set of explanations for seemingly uniform patterns like size dimorphism and sexual cannibalism. Sexual selection appears involved as well as natural selection and mechanisms that are adaptive in other contexts only. Sperm competition has resulted in a plethora of morpho- logical and behavioural adaptations, and simplistic models like those linking reproductive morphology with behaviour and sperm priority patterns in a straightforward way are being replaced by complex models involving an array of parameters. -

Altogether there are now 16 known localities in France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria indicating that the species is well es‐ tablished for a rather long period and more widespread in Europe and perhaps worldwide. As in North America it lives on honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos L.), overwinters in the egg stage and probably has one or two generations a year, with adults at least from late June until early October. It is yet unclear if it causes relevant damage to the host plant in Europe. Keywords: alien species, neozoa, plant pests, Iassinae, Gleditsia 1. Introduction In 2012 a leafhopper was found in several localities in central Europe that was hitherto unknown to European hemipterists. Extensive search in taxonomic litera‐ ture from all around the world revealed that it was Penestragania apicalis (Osborn & Ball, 1898). This species was originally described from Iowa and Nebraska as a member of the genus Macropsis Lewis, 1834 (see Osborn & Ball 1898a), later placed into Bythoscopus Germar, 1833, Stragania Stål, 1862 (see Metcalf 1966a), and finally Penestragania Beamer & Lawson, 1945. The latter was originally erected as a subge‐ nus only and later raised to genus level by Blocker (1979) who limited the genus Stragania to the type species St. -

E-mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT: The caatinga, a thorn-shrub succulent savannah, is located in Northeastern Brazil and characterized by a short and irregular rainy season and a severe dry season. Insects are only abundant during the rainy months, displaying a strong seasonal pat- tern. Here we present data from a yearlong Sphingidae survey undertaken in the reserve Estação Ecológica do Seridó, located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Hawkmoths were collected once a month during two subsequent new moon nights, between 18.00h and 05.00h, attracted with a 160-watt mercury vapor light. A total of 593 specimens belonging to 20 species and 14 genera were col- lected. Neogene dynaeus, Callionima grisescens, and Hyles euphorbiarum were the most abundant species, together comprising up to 82.2% of the total number of specimens collected. These frequent species are residents of the caatinga of Rio Grande do Norte. The rare Sphingidae in this study, Pseudosphinx tetrio, Isognathus australis, and Cocytius antaeus, are migratory species for the caatinga. -

The tours use a specially prepared night tours vehicle, complete with external mounted thermal camera and internal viewing screens. Each participant also has their own state- of-the-art thermal imaging device to use for the duration of the tour. This allows participants to detect animals as small as rabbits at up to 300 metres away or get close enough to see Badgers and Roe Deer going about their nightly routine without them knowing you’re there. We evaluated the capacity of non-cotton plant species (both 34 naturally growing and cultivated) to function as alternative hosts for the cotton leaf hopper 35 Amrasca devastans (Homoptera: Ciccadellidae) and its natural enemies. Forty eight species 36 harboured A. devastans. Twenty four species were true breeding hosts, bearing both nymphal 37 and adult A. devastans, the rest were incidental hosts. The crop Ricinus communis and the 38 vegetables Abelomoschus esculentus and Solanum melongena had the highest potential for 39 harbouring A.
