FACEBOOK, YOUTH AND POLITICAL ACTION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ZIMBABWE AND SOUTH AFRICA A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES, RHODES UNIVERSITY by Admire Mare September 2015 ABSTRACT This comparative multi-sited study examines how, why and when politically engaged youths in distinctive national and social movement contexts use Facebook to facilitate political activism. As part of the research objectives, this study is concerned with investigating how and why youth activists in Zimbabwe and South Africa use the popular corporate social network site for political purposes. The study explores the discursive interactions and micro- politics of participation which plays out on selected Facebook groups and pages. It also examines the extent to which the selected Facebook pages and groups can be considered as alternative spaces for political activism. It also documents and analyses the various kinds of political discourses (described here as digital hidden transcripts) which are circulated by Zimbabwean and South African youth activists on Facebook fan pages and groups. Methodologically, this study adopts a predominantly qualitative research design although it also draws on quantitative data in terms of levels of interaction on Facebook groups and pages. Consequently, this study engages in data triangulation which allows me to make sense of how and why politically engaged youths from a range of six social movements in Zimbabwe and South Africa use Facebook for political action. In terms of data collection techniques, the study deploys social media ethnography (online participant observation), qualitative content analysis and in-depth interviews. -

This research paper provides an overview of the history of the South African press, particularly the “alternative” press, since the early 1900s until 1994, when democracy came to South Africa. Through an in-depth analysis of the African National Congress’s relationship with the press, the commercialization of the press and new developments in technology and news accessibility over the past two decades, the paper goes on to argue that while journalists have been distracted by heated debates within the media and the government about press freedom, and while South African media companies have aggressively cut costs and focused on urban areas, the South African press has lost touch with ordinary South Africans — especially historically disadvantaged South Africans, who are still struggling and who most need representation in news coverage. Potgieter, PJ & Steyn, JJ Bloemfontein CBD Masterplan Project 43rd ISOCARP Congress 2007 How the City of Bloemfontein did the tango alone in the Inner City Renewal Project 1. Introduction Since the founding of Bloemfontein in 1846 development has taken place around a market square area which later became known as the Central Business District (CBD). The study of the inner city was done on request by the Mangaung Local Municipality (MLM) and was based on data obtained for a previous study (1983). After a scientific delineation study which proved that due to changed circumstances in the inner city (CBD) the boundary was extended and a comprehensive land use plan for the area drawn up. This comprehensive land use plan was the culmination of the efforts of a number of people in various disciplines which made up a consortium. The aim of the study was to deliver a product which would enable the Council “to arrive at processes and projects with which the central business district of Bloemfontein can be upgraded to a semblance of its former splendour, is in fact a collection of a number of distinct deliverables.” (Potgieter & Steyn, 2005, 1) One of the main requirements for success of the study was stipulated in the second part of the study’s purpose which read as follows: “It is however important to note that all of the planning endeavours should be in total harmony with each other to ultimately arrive at a single vision for an upgraded CBD.” (Potgieter & Steyn, 2005, 1) However, this study will show to what extent public participation was manipulated by Council in order to get a quick plan before the election and how the planning profession lost against political power. -

Abstract 1 This small-scaled study reviewed supporters experiences within a sports stadium and their impact on a brand. The research specifically is centred around The Sharks brand and the Jonsson Kings Park Stadium, the home stadium of The Sharks rugby team. Rugby is a competitive sport that participates within South Africa’s heritage. This generated from the existence and the attendance to the home stadium of The Sharks. Attenders to the stadium have been declining due to supporters reducing their purchases of the stadium tickets. This study reviews themes that are common to sport stadiums that have suffered within similar scenarios. The information gathered in this study was accumulated through a qualitative approach. This would allow for flexibility of revealing deep insights during the entire primary research. The methodology of research performed involved focus groups and an online survey. The insights received from this, directed meaningful findings and recommendations that aspires to assist The Sharks by providing useful data to increase attenders to the stadium. It was concluded through the research that supporters do not value the stadium experience. -

OFFICIAL GUIDE TO South Africa 2018/19 Communications 53 Official Guide to South Africa 2018/19 Communications 54 Department of Communications (DoC) and Digital Technologies (DCDT) Following the reconfiguration of government departments in June 2019, the DoC was merged with the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (DTPS) to form the new DCDT. The then DoC was spearheading the process of migrating broadcasting signals from analogue to digital. South Africa’s national digital network coverage comprises DTT transmission coverage of 84% of the population with the remaining 16% to be covered by satellite network. DTT is a reliable and cost-efficient means to distribute linear TV content and has many advantages over the analogue broadcasting system. One of its major advantages for communities is that it clears the analogue spectrum for the delivery of broadband mobile Internet and Wi-fi services. To view digital TV signals on an ordinary analogue TV set, consumers will need a set-top box (STB). Government will provide about five million poor TV-owning households with free STBs. Once the migration is complete, high definition TV telecast facilities would be available, along with expanded community, FM and satellite radio services to the entire population. During the 2017/18 financial year, the then DoC developed the White Paper on Audio-Visual and Digital Content Policy for South Africa, which provides enabling mechanisms to facilitate ownership of the new audio-visual digital content value chain by previously disadvantaged communities and small, medium and micro enterprises. Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) In 2018, Communications (and Digital Technologies) Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams announced the “Building a Capable 4IR Army” capacity development programme to ensure that communities are equipped to take advantage of new digital technologies, unlock future jobs and drive competitiveness. -
