COOS BAY — As logging in state forests comes to a standstill, the local state forestry office is feeling the crunch. According to Oregon Depart- ment of Forestry spokesman Rod Nichols, the state anticipated the need to cut seven positions at its Coos District Office. Nichols said the reductions are coming from 23 positions that handle the Elliott State Forest Management plan. Harvest yield for the 2013-2014 fiscal year was initially anticipated at 40 million board feet, but ODF has reduced those expectations to 15 million board feet. Logging at 11 timber sales in state forests, including the Elliott, is currently suspended under an injunction handed down by a fed- eral judge in November. It’s crazy how much I can absolutely revile something while loving it at the same time. I just moved to the South Coast and decided not to get cable in my house. The only reason I watch cable is for ESPN, and it’s gone from a love/hate relationship to just a hate relationship. I’m like a drug addict on the last legs of addiction right before he hits rock bottom and stops completely. So with last week’s news that plans to launch Fox Sports 1, its own 24-hour sports channel, on August 17,it was time to take a break from cable. It’s not that having another station is just too overwhelming. I’m actually excited about Fox Sports 1’s chances compared to the fledgeling NBC and CBS sports networks.
