A comic book champBy David J. HoganMany creators of comic books from the Silver and Bronze Age have received their due, and now it's the turn of Marie Severin, one of comics' do-anything talents who thrived in the field for decades. Dewey Cassell's Marie Severin: The Mirthful Mistress of Comics rightfully suggests that Marie's gender is the least interesting facet of her life vis-a-vis her career in a boys'- club industry. Rather, via interviews with co-workers (including big brother John Severin) and Marie herself, the book makes clear that Marie's tickets to success have been her skill and versatility. She was a splendid (and very young) colorist at EC in the early 1950s. Later, during a long association with Marvel Comics, she worked in production, as a colorist, and as a sterling pencil artist on key franchises, including Dr. Strange, the Hulk, Sub-Mariner, and Kull. Marie also spent a period designing Marvel's superhero covers--dynamic roughs created as guides for other artists. Marie is particularly well liked for the humor work she did for Not Brand Echh, Spoof, Crazy, and other Marvel titles. She's a storyteller as well as a peerless caricaturist; author Cassell rightfully regrets that Marie never found time to contribute to the magazine incarnation of MAD. She would have been a perfect fit. The "mirthful" part of the book's subtitle refers not just to Not Brand Echh and the others, but to Marie's active and occasionally wicked sense of office humor, which she expressed with caricatures of herself and of co-workers. These quick sketches that expertly deflated egos or underscored some absurdity of the office (such as the female "fan club" enjoyed by artist Herb Trimpe)were cherished by the Marvel Bullpen, and usually ended up pinned to a wall after they'd been passed from hand to hand. In one of the book's interviews, John Romita--who has profound admiration for Marie's talents and guidance--says, "Oh, God, if you tripped on a carpet, in 30 seconds there would be a drawing of it." Marie apparently couldn't help herself. She was a keen observer of people, and when she perceived inadvertent slapstick, pompousness, or other silly behavior, she grabbed her brush and went to work. Running throughout the book, almost subliminally, is the reality of comic book publishing during Marvel's days of heady growth, where deadlines constantly loomed, and where the suits in the corner offices simply wanted product that made money. Life on the creative side could be rewarding, but it was a pressure cooker, too. Marie kept calm and carried on! The oversized book is pleasingly laid out in a two-column format. The ample illustrations (including some in a special color section) include pencils, finished pages, cover roughs, some 30 years of office and celebrity caricatures, promotional work (such as a sell piece sent to Marvel's distributors), freelance jobs for Esquire and others, and latter-day pieces commissioned by fans. Included among a wealth of photographs are early family snapshots, and photos of Marie and co-workers at EC and Marvel. In all, a handsome book about a big talent.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Marie Severin: The Mirthful Mistress of Comics- Excellent!!!By TrollbeardI've always loved Marie Severin's work since I started buying Marvel comics back in 1966. But even if you've never heard of her, if you are at all interested in the behind-the-scenes at EC and the 1960s and 1970s Marvel, you need this book! I'm only halfway through, but it is marvelous. Riddle me this: Why are there no typewritten scripts from any Al Feldstein EC story? Read this book and you'll find out! And you'll learn lots of other very cool EC and Marvel comic-book related stuff as well! 5 stars!!!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I liked the book very much in fact Marie is in ...By BonnieI liked the book very much in fact Marie is in a nursing home near me and she explained alot to me about the pic and stories in the book The book brought back memories when I was a child just the pictures alone was worth the price of the book Marie Severin was born into a family of artists, and she made friendships in comics that have lasted a lifetime. She colored the horror, science fiction, and war comics of the legendary EC line, and spent thirty years working for Marvel Comics, doing everything from production and coloring to penciling, inking, and art direction, with work on characters including the Incredible Hulk, Sub-Mariner, Doctor Strange, and Kull the Conqueror, which she drew with her brother John. She is renowned for her sense of humor, reflected in the comic book Not Brand Echh, as well as the numerous caricatures she has produced over the years, earning her the nickname Mirthful Marie from Stan Lee. This loving tribute contains revealing and often amusing insights of her close friends and her brother John, as well as many of her co-workers, including Stan Lee, Al Feldstein, Roy Thomas, John Romita, Jack Davis, Jack Kamen, Tony Isabella, Gene Colan, Jim Mooney, Joe Sinnott, Mark Evanier, and David Anthony Kraft, plus an extensive commentary by Marie herself. Complementing the text is a wealth of photographs and artwork from throughout her career, including numerous rare and unpublished pieces, as well as a color gallery, showing her mastery with a painter's pallette. Marie Severin: The Mirthful Mistress of Comics is sure to bring back great memories (and a smile to your face), as you enjoy the remarkable story of The First Lady of Comics.
