4 JUNE 2014 A49 – A 38 – A30 – HOME It may be very different for you but certain roads, some songs and one or two poems give me a sense of longing, a sense of excitement and sometimes memory of promises to keep. In my youth the A38 was the road out of the West Country and childhood - the way to university, adulthood and pastures new. And then somehow the same road, the A38, became the way home to where I belonged, the way back to old friends, shared experiences and possibly nostalgia. I feel a bit wary of nostalgia - Blue remembered hills are best kept as memories because the only thing more certain than death and taxes is change.... “You won’t even recognise the road, ” becomes truer with each passing year. When we are young we welcome change. As a newly qualified teacher I was given the joy of Friday morning Hymn practise – once a week for forty minutes- with the whole school - in the hall - after assembly. I learnt that if I showed enough ‘wellie’ my children would join in and give singing their joy and enthusiasm. Some say ‘Nostalgia is not what it used to be’ but the other day I discovered that my favourite hymn is still the second most popular for assembly in primary schools forty years later - Travelling on - ‘ one more step along the World I go , from the old things to the new…’, Teachers, and possibly a few children, enjoy the upbeat optimism and a sense that change is welcome. ‘Give me courage when the world is rough; keep me loving though the world is tough, Leap and sing in all I do, keep me travelling along with you’. Now that I have put this song back into your head ask yourself how Sydney Carter expressed his faith - the need for dance, company, fun and the need to accept life’s daily task of travelling on. Sydney wrote, “In the kingdom of heaven is my end and my beginning, and the road I must travel night and day” BENEFICE GETTING THE RIGHT HEALTHCARE ADVICE AND TREATMENT
