Principal’s message: Dear Parents, caregivers

We are now halfway through this second term and a huge amount of student-focused activity still lies ahead in weeks 6 to 10.

Today, we farewell our deputy principal, Mr Cam Maunder, and his whanau after six years of massively valuable contributions to Masterton Intermediate and our community. The Maunders will be heading to China where Cam will be taking up the Head of Academics position at Rong Qiao Sedburgh International School in Fuzhou, China. We wish them all the very best and hope that we will be able to keep in touch in the future.

We have appointed Mrs. Cushla Jones to the role of Deputy Principal . Cushla is currently leading the 3 to 12 year olds at Marist Brothers International School in Kobe, Japan and is looking forward to starting with us at the beginning of term three on Monday, July 23.

On behalf of the many intelligent Masterton Intermediate staff members, I am sure that you will join with me in wishing the Queensland team the best of luck in the up-coming State of Origin rugby league series.

SUPER SPORT HOCKEY On the 30th of May MIS went to Manuwatu in for a Super Sport hockey tournament. MIS had a girls team and a boys team. Intermediate schools around the region competed for a girls banner and a boys banner. Each team played 6 games against different schools. The girls won 5 games and drew in the final, the boys lost 1 game by 1 point but won the rest. Since the girls drew in the final against Ross Intermediate it went back to the amount of goals we scored from all the games. MIS had scored more goals so the girls won the girls banner! This is the first time MIS has won this banner. The boys sadly came second but only by 1 point so they were so close, the boys lost to Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School.

Game 2 - lose 3 nil to EBIS (who went on to play in the final) Game 3 - win 5 nil against Avalon. Game 4 - (1/4 final) lost 1 nil v Hutt. Game 5 - win on Penalties v Tawa awesome effort in goal Lucy. Game 6 - win on Penalties v SWIS awesome effort in goal Mia. We ended up finishing 5th of 14 teams not a bad performance when we were 2nd to last last year. Overall It was a great wet and cold day!!! Since the tournament MIS girls have played Kuranui, Chanel, Solway and we won all 3 games by a lot. Then MIS played Douglas Villa Under 18 girls and we lost.

BOYS: - Jack Hunter & Jayden Fennell

On Tuesday the 15th the boys first eleven went to a Wrissa Football competition in Wakefield , we were about about 5 minutes because of traffic jams and a puke stop (Lucas Buddell) but we still won 2/1. The second game we won 3/2. The rest of the scores were not that great. we ended up 9th out of 15 in pool B we were hoping for a better result than 9th but we played very well for the first games together. Great job Mitchell Parker for some amazing saves in goalie.

NYLD Bella Spencer and Sheryl Chand

On the 22nd of May, the MIS student leaders went on a trip to Porirua, Wellington to attend National Young Leaders Day (NYLD). NYLD is an event where students go to learn how to be a leader and hear fascinating stories from guest speakers about their accomplishments and who they have become. Student leaders from all the schools of the Wellington region came to hear about leadership. Some of the guest speakers were Kelly Wilson, Lisa Tamati , Riley Hathaway and an amazing performance from William Wairua and Vince Harder. The speakers spoke about facing hardships and overcoming them. They also encouraged us to face our fears because they may become our talents in the future. One of the speakers, Jono Naylor who used to be the mayor of Palmerston North talked about having hope. While the speakers were talking, they also added a few humorous jokes and allowed us to ask questions about their career. While the next speakers were getting ready, we had a few fun games to keep us entertained. Overall we had an amazing day, where we learnt heaps and we ad a lot of fun.

On May the 18th a small group from the mis kapa haka went down to the Carterton Events Centre to perform in front of heaps of people. We performed to fundraise for the new netball courts at Colombo. It was a great experience for everyone and especially me.There were some very important speakers that were Kieran Mcanulty and Luther Toloa. Later in the evening, Sir Michael Jones commented on how amazing our group was!

CHESS Harry Ewington On Thursday the 24th of May, the 3 MIS chess teams walked to Wairarapa College to take part in the Chess Power Inter-School tournament. We played 7 rounds of chess, with everyone playing one game of chess per round. There were four categories for the players: Rookie, Junior, Intermediate and Senior, depending on your school year. The Rookies and Juniors were mixed, and so were the Intermediate and Senior, although they were ranked separately. MIS had some great results, with players coming first, second and third in the individuals, and our top team qualified for the Nationals in . There was also a badge system where if you did certain challenges in one of your games you would earn a badge for it. There were also a few challenges set up for in between games, if you won them you would earn a badge. Overall, we all had a fun time playing chess, and we can’t wait for the next tournament in August.

GEO CAMP What an amazing two weeks we have experienced uncovering the many hidden geological secrets of the Wairarapa. The scientists from GNS Science lead us through a programme of discovery using team work and inquiry. We found out about many things but especially how amazing rocks can tell us of ancient oceans worlds now up lifted to become land, active landscapes and colliding tectonic plates, where our geological resources come from, the rock record of deep geological time, the science and art of reading a landscape, environment change and climate and sea level change through time. One of the most interesting places we visited was Mangapakeha where we saw the mud volcanoes. Earthquakes caused these volcanoes to form and they have mud and gases bubbling from them. The five MIS students attending, Elle Corlett, Freddie Day, Boston Moylan, Hriday Patel and Julia Sutton, were a credit to their families as they did a fine job of representing MIS on GeoCamp.
