This showcase, now in its fourth year, is a great way to see singer-songwriters perform in intimate settings on Captiva Island, Fort Myers Beach and historic downtown Fort Myers. This year’s headliners include Lindsay Ell and Brooke Eden. The artists will be performing at Pinchers Crab Shack at The Marina at Edison Ford on Sept. 27. Ell has opened for The Band Perry and Luke Bryan, and is currently on tour with Brad Paisley. The Canadian Country Music Association recently nominated Ell for Female Artist of the Year. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Keith Hill on Keith Hill
June 1, 2015, Issue 450 Addressing SaladGate Six pages of in-depth reporting on Women In Country and a post-CRS panel write-up in which Keith Hill urged slashing female- voiced songs made nary a ripple outside the business a few months back. But the consultant’s lettuce-and-tomatoes analogy last week in this space touched off a social and, eventually, major media tidal wave. Go figure. We’ll get to Hill in the next story (right), after female PDs and MDs weigh in with their thoughts on a well-known though still confounding reality. In full disclosure, some of the women we contacted declined to contribute for lack of time or lack of what they felt would be helpful feedback. Some passed because they weren’t comfortable publicly commenting in a “no-win argument.” And some came to us asking to be part of the conversation. • Issue 209 Music & Mornings Many Factors Determine the Amount of Music a Country Station Plays in Morning Drive
September 13, 2010 Issue 209 Music & Mornings Many factors determine the amount of music a Country station plays in morning drive. The competitive situation, spot load, caliber of air talent and even a change in morning shows are among them. Most recently, PPM ratings have led a number of programmers to increase the amount of music heard between 6-10am. For purposes of this week’s study, we looked at a variety of market situations to see how many songs were played in morning drive on a Wednesday for the last 12 months (excluding December 2009). As always, all airplay information comes from our friends at Mediabase 24/7. Stand Alone PPM Markets KKGO/Los Angeles has added a couple of songs per hour in the Medal Heads: “Not bad for an old radio guy!” says WGH-FM/AM/Norfolk last three months.
