Entretanto, essa região vem sofrendo um crescente aumento nas pressões antrópicas, principalmente pelo desmatamento, o que implica uma forte preocupação sobre a conservação de toda a biota dessa região. -
Bird Ecology, Conservation, and Community Responses
BIRD ECOLOGY, CONSERVATION, AND COMMUNITY RESPONSES TO LOGGING IN THE NORTHERN PERUVIAN AMAZON by NICO SUZANNE DAUPHINÉ (Under the Direction of Robert J. Cooper) ABSTRACT Understanding the responses of wildlife communities to logging and other human impacts in tropical forests is critical to the conservation of global biodiversity. I examined understory forest bird community responses to different intensities of non-mechanized commercial logging in two areas of the northern Peruvian Amazon: white-sand forest in the Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserve, and humid tropical forest in the Cordillera de Colán. I quantified vegetation structure using a modified circular plot method. I sampled birds using mist nets at a total of 21 lowland forest stands, comparing birds in logged forests 1, 5, and 9 years postharvest with those in unlogged forests using a sample effort of 4439 net-hours. I assumed not all species were detected and used sampling data to generate estimates of bird species richness and local extinction and turnover probabilities. During the course of fieldwork, I also made a preliminary inventory of birds in the northwest Cordillera de Colán and incidental observations of new nest and distributional records as well as threats and conservation measures for birds in the region. In both study areas, canopy cover was significantly higher in unlogged forest stands compared to logged forest stands. In Allpahuayo-Mishana, estimated bird species richness was highest in unlogged forest and lowest in forest regenerating 1-2 years post-logging. An estimated 24-80% of bird species in unlogged forest were absent from logged forest stands between 1 and 10 years postharvest. -

TOUR REPORT Southwestern Amazonia 2017 Final
For the first time on a Birdquest tour, the Holy Grail from the Brazilian Amazon, Rondonia Bushbird – male (Eduardo Patrial) BRAZIL’S SOUTHWESTERN AMAZONIA 7 / 11 - 24 JUNE 2017 LEADER: EDUARDO PATRIAL What an impressive and rewarding tour it was this inaugural Brazil’s Southwestern Amazonia. Sixteen days of fine Amazonian birding, exploring some of the most fascinating forests and campina habitats in three different Brazilian states: Rondonia, Amazonas and Acre. We recorded over five hundred species (536) with the exquisite taste of specialties from the Rondonia and Inambari endemism centres, respectively east bank and west bank of Rio Madeira. At least eight Birdquest lifer birds were acquired on this tour: the rare Rondonia Bushbird; Brazilian endemics White-breasted Antbird, Manicore Warbling Antbird, Aripuana Antwren and Chico’s Tyrannulet; also Buff-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher, Acre Tody-Tyrant and the amazing Rufous Twistwing. Our itinerary definitely put together one of the finest selections of Amazonian avifauna, though for a next trip there are probably few adjustments to be done. The pre-tour extension campsite brings you to very basic camping conditions, with company of some mosquitoes and relentless heat, but certainly a remarkable site for birding, the Igarapé São João really provided an amazing experience. From the rich east part of Rondonia, the fascinating savannas and endless forests around Humaitá in Amazonas, and finally the impressive bamboo forest at Rio Branco in Acre, this tour focused the endemics from both sides of the medium Rio Madeira. -

The information ranges from strategic, national assessments of coastal and estuarine environmental quality to real-time information for navigation or hazardous materials spill response. Through its National Status and Trends (NS&T) Program, ORCA uses uniform techniques to monitor toxic chemical contamination of bottom-feeding fish, mussels and oysters, and sediments at about 300 locations throughout the United States. A related NS&T Program of directed research examines the relationships between contaminant exposure and indicators of biological responses in fish and shellfish. Through the Hazardous Materials Response and Assessment Division (HAZMAT) Scientific Support Coordination program, ORCA provides critical scientific support for planning and responding to spills of oil or hazardous materials into coastal environments. Technical guidance includes spill trajectory predictions, chemical hazard analyses, and assessments of the sensitivity of marine and estuarine environments to spills. To fulfill the responsibilities of the Secretary of Commerce as a trustee for living marine resources, HAZMAT’s Coastal Resource Coordination program provides technical support to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during all phases of the remedial process to protect the environment and restore natural resources at hundreds of waste sites each year. -

ECOLOGICAL REPORT APRIL 2017 INKATERRA ASSOCIATION I. POINT COUNTS REPORT 1.1. SAMPLING ÁREA: Inkaterra Guides Field Station - Palmetum 1.2. DATE: April 06th, 2017 1.3. STARTING HOUR: 5:35 h CLOSING HOUR: 7:25 h 1.4. PARTICIPANTS: Noe Huaraca y Andreina Méndez 1.5. OBJECTIVES: 1.5.1 To complement bird wildlife diversity monitoring by including canopy and underbrush forest bird species of Inkaterra Guides Field Station. 1.5.2 To establish the registered bird species' abundance parameters patterns. 1.5.3 To understand the differences between bird wildlife compositions according by its habitat. 1.6. METODOLOGÍA: The Point Count method (Ralph et al., 1995; Ralph, 1996; MINAM, 2015) was employed, which consists in staying at a point station for 10 minutes, while recording all the birds seen and heard. The distance between points is 150 meters. This month, the evaluation was performed at the trail way depicted by Image 1. Inkaterra Guides Field Station Palmetum Image 1. Sampling area and Point Counts map 1.7. RESULTS: 8 point stations were evaluated, where 64 subjects were registered, all belonging to 19 Families and 11 Orders. All registered subjects indicated a richness of 46 species. The richest Order was Passeriformes with 21 species and 7 families (Thamnophilidae, Cotingidae, Formicariidae, Furnariidae, Icteridae, Trogloditydae y Tyrannidae), next were Psittaciformes (macaws, parrots and perakeet) with 6 species and 1 family, Galbuliformes (jacamar), and finally, Columbiformes (pigeons) with 4 species and 1 family per each one. Among the bird species registered, the most relatively abundant were parrots; the Pionus menstruus species (Blue headed Parrot) showed the highest number of subjects registered while flying (n=11), all spotted at counting point 2 (n=7) and counting point 3 (n=4). -

This was one of an unusually accessible nesting pair near the Amazonian town of Limoncocha that provided a worthy add-on to The Andes Introtour in northwest Ecuador that preceded this (Jose Illanes/Tropical Birding Tours). Guided by Jose Illanes Birds in the photos within this report are denoted in RED, all photos were taken by the Tropical Birding guide. 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] Tropical Birding Trip Report Ecuador: HARPY EAGLE & East Andean Foothills Extension (Jan-Feb 2021) INTRODUCTION This custom extension trip was set up for one person who simply could not get enough of Ecuador…John had just finished Ecuador: The Andes Introtour, in the northwest of the country, and also joined the High Andes Extension to that tour, which sampled the eastern highlands too. However, he was still missing vast chunks of this small country that is bursting with bird diversity. Most importantly, he was keen to get in on the latest “mega bird” in Ecuador, a very accessible Harpy Eagle nest, near a small Amazonian town, which had been hitting the local headlines and drawing the few birding tourists in the country at this time to come see it. With this in mind, TROPICAL BIRDING has been offering custom add-ons to all of our Ecuador offerings (for 2021 and 2022) to see this Harpy Eagle pair, with only three extra days needed to see it. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The construction of hydroelectric power stations can affect the fauna, including the adaptation to the new lentic conditions, and may lead to the disappearance of some species and the colonization of others. Usually, there is a lack of information in the post-flooding phases. The present study is a preliminary qualitative survey of mammals, birds, and reptiles in the influenced area of the Balbina hydroelectric dam (01º55' S, 59º29' W). Species records were made during field trips to the reservoir with no group specific methods. The conservation status of the identified species followed the classification adopted by IUCN. Twenty-two mammals (one endangered – EN), forty-two birds and six reptiles (one vulnerable – VU) were identified. Although the list presented here is preliminary, if appropriately complemented it can be used to understand the effects of hydroelectric dams on the Amazonian fauna. Duncan, an avowed antbird fanatic, contacted me after having come to the conclusion that he could no longer ignore the Rio Roosevelt given the recent batch of antbird splits and new taxa coming from the Madeira – Tapajós interfluvium. We had touched on the subject during his previous trips in Brazil, having also toyed with the idea of including an expedition-style extension to search for Brazil's biggest mega when it comes to antbirds – the Rondônia Bushbird. After some back and forth in the first two months of the following year, an e-mail came through from Duncan which ended thusly: “statement of the bleedin’ obvious: I would SERIOUSLY like to see the Bushbird.” At which point the game was on, so to speak. We began to organize an itinerary for the Rio Roosevelt with a dedicated expedition for Rondonia Bushbird. By mid-year things were coming together for a September trip, but in August we were de-railed by a minor health problem and two participants being forced to back out at the last minute. With a bushbird in the balance, we weren't about to call the whole thing off, and thus a new itinerary sans Roosevelt was hatched for 2015, an itinerary which called for about a week in the Tabajara area on the southern border of the Campos Amazônicos National Park, followed by a few days on the west bank of the rio Madeira to go for a couple of Duncan's targets in that area. -

Summary: 321 species of birds, 6 species of mammals, 5 species of reptiles and amphibians, 9 species of notable insects, and 1 species of fish positively identified. BIRDS (321 species recorded, of which 7 were heard only and 12 seen by guides only): TINAMOUS (Tinamidae) (2) Little Tinamou (Crypturellus soui): (HO), heard on both full days near Surama. Undulated Tinamou (Crypturellus undulatus): heard and seen by a few on the Rupununi River boat trip. DUCKS, GEESE AND SWANS (Anatidae) (4) White-faced Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna viduata): seen, primarily at a distance and while flying, on the way to and around the savannas at Caiman House. Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis): small group observed in wetland on way to Narish’s house for Mahaica River boat trip. Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata): seen at different places on 4 days, mostly small groups flying. White-cheeked Pintail (Anas bahamensis): at least 2 found at a distance at the Ogle Seawall (a lifer for Ron!). -
