7 ThankREAL you for all of your legal questions LIFE over the last month. OurLAW friendly team of experts randomly chose to answer the following questions: I am named as the sole Executor in the Will of a relative who died a few days ago. I’m worried as I’m not sure what I need to do or what forms I LET US need to complete. I don’t understand what a grant of probate is either. Do I have to appoint a solicitor? SOLVE A named Executor does not have a legal duty to appoint a solicitor, but if you choose to do so, you can work together, allowing your solicitor to YOUR take some of the burden at this difficult time. LEGAL In the first few days after someone dies, there are 4 important things you will need to do before deciding whether to instruct a solicitor to assist PROBLEMS you with the estate administration:- 1. If you have not already done so, get a medical certificate from a GP or hospital doctor so that you can register the death. 2. Register the death within 5 days. You’ll then get the documents you need for the funeral. 3. Arrange the funeral. 4. Secure any property (such as a house) owned by your relative. As the appointed Executor, you are responsible for administering the estate in accordance with the Will and the applicable law. A Grant of Probate is a legal document which states that you (as the Executor) have the authority to deal with your relative’s estate. Please note that depending on the value of your relative’s estate, a Grant is not always required. Before you can obtain the grant, you will need to ascertain the full extent of the assets and liabilities of the estate by correspondence with the relevant organisations. You will then need to calculate whether any tax is due, report to HMRC and pay any inheritance tax that may be due. You can then make an application to the Probate Registry and once the grant is obtained, can collect in the estate funds. You will then need to ensure that the estate is distributed correctly and in accordance with the Will. There are many different stages to consider and if the estate is likely to be complex or of a high value, it may be advisable to appoint a professional to assist you. We would be happy to have a brief telephone conversation to discuss your circumstances, following which you can decide whether or not to meet with us to progress matters further. 9 I’m unhappy with the appearance of my teeth, will veneers help? by Chloe Chen, Dental Hygienist at New Street Dental Care

Before After

What are they? A veneer is a very thin sheet of porcelain that covers the front of your tooth and can change the shape, colour and size of your tooth. It is very similar to how a false fingernail fits over the front of a nail, except that a small portion of it wraps round the back to help strengthen it.

Back Front Example of a veneer to cover a front tooth How do they work? The dentist will take impressions of your teeth as they are and a lab technician will make up some wax veneers on a model of your teeth so you can see what they would look like before you have anything done. If you like the look of these, a very thin layer of your tooth is removed, this is the preparation needed to fit the veneer over the top of your teeth so it doesn’t stick out and ensure it looks natural. You will be fitted with some temporary veneers that are made from a similar material to the porcelain and they use the shape of the wax ones to make them. Two weeks later the lab will have made you the permanent ones and they will be fixed to your teeth with a tooth friendly, permanent cement. You may need some local anaesthetic to make sure that is comfortable but sometimes it is not required. The colour of the veneer will be agreed with you before the treatment to make sure that it is the colour that you want, it can either be made to match your existing teeth or made lighter if you want a whiter smile. If you think you would like veneers or just want to know more, feel free to contact our friendly staff at New Street Dental Care on 01264 301 301, and they would be happy to answer any questions.

The request for the cancellation of the concessionary charge was made by Councillor Iris Andersen who said: "Charities are already struggling in these hard times so I brought the issue to the attention of the Cabinet to see if there was something we could do to help. I am absolutely delighted with their response.” New Leader of the Council, Councillor Phil North said: “Cllr Andersen is the champion of so many voluntary causes in Andover – so when she brought forward a request on their behalf, we listened. We wanted to make a significant commitment to charities and community groups in Andover enabling them to save money and help publicise their cause. Although this means the Council will have to provide staffing to facilitate this hire and lose some revenue, we believe the benefits to the community outweigh these issues – and will encourage more vibrancy in our High Street.” Charities and local community groups can benefit from two days free of charge per year. After this they would pay the standard concessionary charge. This offer is in addition to the ‘Charity pitch’ on the Thursday and Saturday Markets which charities can use free of charge up to 4 times a year. Sunday 20 August, 10am to 2pm Last year (2016/17) there Andover High Street were two hires of the High Street by Commercial/Private organisations and seven Concessionary bookings. The Time Ring had eight Commercial bookings and 25 Concessionary ones. You can book the venues online or contact Test Valley Borough Council: www.testvalley. gov.uk, Tel: 01264 368000.

We’re all aware of this and know that the inside of a car can get very hot in summer (at 22°C air temperature outside, the inside of a car can reach 47°C within an hour) so any animal left inside may overheat developing hyperthermia and dehydration. If this is untreated then the animal can die. I use the word “animal” as this applies to all pets, not just dogs! The obvious way to prevent this is not to leave pets in a car when it’s hot. However, sometimes it is unavoidable, so what can you do to prevent the problem? 1. Leave the pet for as short a time as possible.

38 www.mlggazettes.co.uk 2. Leave windows and sunroof open (though not wide open!). 3. Cover the windscreen with a blanket or sunscreen. 4. Provide water. 5. CHECK your pet regularly and let them out each time; this allows the interior to cool as well. There are also some new temperature probes that will send a signal to your mobile phone if the car gets too hot. However, don't rely totally on these… all technology breaks down sometimes! What should you do if you see a dog in a car? Firstly, it is important to see if it is distressed or not but don’t be intrusive! Disturbing the dog and causing it to bark will actually make things worse as it will lose fluid through its mouth and being active will make it hotter. In short, if the dog seems calm, leave it be. If it is in distress then get help at once – dial 999 but do not break into the vehicle yourself unless advised to by the police (otherwise it can be classed as criminal damage). If your dog is hyperthermic then it is important to cool it down. The best way to do this is to cover it in a wet sheet. Please note that the water should be cool but not cold otherwise shock may result. NEVER use ice! Veterinary attention should be sought quickly as fluids via a drip will be needed. We’re very fortunate that everyone already seems well aware of this and we actually see less than one case of hyperthermia a year! It’s still too many but it is good to see that the publicity does help in this case. 39 Clearer prices Opticians Clearer vision Our prices include

his month’s walk takes fresh strides away from Braishfield, Tin the middle of the Test Valley and heads out into the hills and the mid Hampshire countryside. The recommended parking for this exhilarating 4.5 mile walk would be the recreation ground, just off Braishfield Road. Whether they are prescription sunglasses or just shades, you can make a stylish statement whilst protecting your eyes from harmful rays. Historically prescription sunglasses tended to be the same shape as everyday glasses but with a dark tinted lens. This meant they were unadventurous and usually unappealing. Now with the growth in the fashion industry and social media, our awareness of how we look and want to look has changed. We also have more disposable income and so are able to indulge ourselves and take time and care about the way we look. The media has made us far more aware of the dangers to our eyes from the sun's harmful rays and the advantages of removing distracting glare from our vision whilst driving etc. Many of us now take part in leisure time sports, such as golf, cycling, tennis; that are greatly enhanced by eliminating distracting visual haze and sharpening contrast. This has all led to a huge increase in the variety and Bring with you, or sophistication of sunglasses available today. mention this article So sunglasses have moved from being a functional necessity to an aesthetic to receive a must have. Winton Academy students visit Roche Court Sculpture Gardens Year 9 Art students recently took part in a visit to Roche Court sculpture garden in East Winterslow. The visit formed part of this term's work on sculpture. Education officers Emma and Beth gave a very detailed and interesting tour of the grounds, giving an insight into how the sculptures were made and the ideas behind their creation. Year 9 were very lucky to be encouraged to touch specific sculptures and even lie down on them! The tour included a visit to the gallery where work by Anthony Caro was exhibited. Our students found the visit fascinating and did not want to leave. Both Emma and Beth commented on the high level of engagement students showed and commended their excellent behaviour. The Art department has been invited to take part in a larger project with Roche Court in the Autumn term which will see us returning to study the sculpture further, create our own work and take part in an exhibition.
