Play on Your Fears, Meet the Psychopaths ! MOVIE REVIEW MOVIE NAME: THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) CATEGORY: HORROR, THRILLER REVIEW BY: AJAY SHARMA (12055) Play on your fears, meet the psychopaths ! Directed by Jonathan Demme, based upon the novel by the same name by Thomas Harris (1988), the movie takes us through a journey of psychopath minds: the way they think, the way they justify their crimes (even to themselves), the methods they use, and how the FBI works to catch them. The movie has the seriousness and intensity that has been entirely lacking in horror movies lately. It features two serial killers, one who is an imprisoned criminal, Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), the other one nicknamed as Buffalo Bill by the FBI. Clarice Starling(Jodie Foster), a top student at the FBI's training academy is set upon the assignment of investigating Buffalo Bill, who kills young women and removes the skin from their bodies for purposes unrevealed(Spoiler alert!).He is an amateur, has his weaknesses and can be caught, although only someone who has begun to think like him can defeat him. Clarice is advised by her boss Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) to interview "Hannibal the Cannibal" Dr.Lecter, to find out any leads to track down Buffalo. Lecter being an interesting character throughout the movie, is a prize-winning psychiatrist turned a killer and cannibal who gently manipulates her mind and plays on her fears. The intimidating intellect of Hopkins' character is also reflected in his abundant wit, which he uses to provoke and torment his jailers and later confuse the forces to get away. He remains an unrepentant killer, almost as dangerous in his cell as he is on the loose. With his cunning facial expressions and amazing telepathic performances, he's the monster as genius, and Hopkins plays him with disturbing authority. Cinematography and screenplay have very well put the seriousness intended by Harris in his novel. A tale of bloody scenes, suspense, deception, manipulation and a masterpiece for those longing to watch horror movies. .

Transgender occurs because his or her background phenomenon of life. The writer arranges the literary review by discussing theory and approach. The theory that the writer applies is queer theory developed by Michael Foucault. Besides, the writer uses the theory of Judith Buttler that explains and describes about sex, orientation and gender. This queer theory is more correlated and understandable for the analysis. In addition, Psychology Literature approach by Ramajaru is also applied. The Result of this analysis shows some symptoms that exist in the character of Buffalo Bill. It was started with cross-dressing, assertion that transgender vital body parts are disgusting, have a desire to change gen types, existence of behavior and physical appearance of inside or abnormal genetic makeup. The writer hopes that by conducting this research it could give the reader more understanding about how is the implementation of queer theory in the literary field or work and become the new guidance to the future reader that are interested in discussing with same theory.

They identify with characters they see, or they model themselves on those characters. Behavior, fashion sense, and morality can be used to shape an individual who sees someone like them in media. This reflection, however, has a downside. For many Americans, their daily life is filled with people who look and act just like them. We often find ourselves living in bubbles filled with people with similar world views. Television and movies are the only exposure to different individuals many Americans will receive. Negative stereotypes can directly impact the judgement of one group of people on another. These negative stereotypes can lead to people supporting policies that negatively impacts those that are associated with those stereotypes.

Dua karakter ini memiliki perbedaan, namun juga sekaligus persamaan yang membuatnya menarik untuk dianalisis lebih jauh. Kedua karakter pembunuh berantai ini terlihat berbeda jika dilihat dari segi penokohan, Hannibal Lecter yang digambarkan sebagai karakter pembunuh yang canggih, sementara Buffalo Bill digambarkan sebagai karakter pembunuh berantai tradisional, analisis ini kemudian dibandingkan secara langsung untuk melihat bagaimana masing-masing karakter mengembangkan mentalnya setelah mengalami trauma masa kecil melalui analisis dengan menggunakan teori Psychoanalysis yang diperkenalkan oleh Sigmund Freud, dan teori Self Defense Mechanism yang dikenalkan oleh Anna Freud. Dalam teori Sigmund Freud dikemukakan bahwa ada tiga zona psikis manusia yang bekerja sama dalam membentuk tingkah laku manusia yang kompleks, yaitu Id, Superego, dan Ego. Dalam menganalisis karya ini digunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif. Hasil analisis yang didapatkan adalah bahwa, meskipun tokoh Hannibal Lecter dikategorikan sebagai pembunuh yang canggih, dan Buffalo Bill dikategorikan sebagai pembunuh tradisional. Tiap karakter menggunakan hasil pertahanan diri mereka tadi sebagai cara/alat untuk mencapai tujuan masing-masing. Mostly Indonesians still keeps the essence of the religion and obey toward the religion itself. Because of that, mostly Indonesian still thinks LGBT is an unusual thing to be legalized. After graduating in 1964, Harris worked as a crime reporter for a local newspaper and he also worked as an international crime reporter in Mexico (―Thomas Harris‖); the vivid descriptions of crimes in his novels are likely based on crimes in real life. Moreover, Harris‘s first novel, Black Sunday, was a best-seller, though it did not revolve around a specific criminal; in fact, it portrays a terrorist attack. Picture a rainy evening, camped out on the couch with a good friend and some popcorn, about to watch Jonathan Demme’s masterpiece: The Silence of the Lambs. Everything is going smoothly, with a few startling moments keeping you on the edge of your seat. Before you know it, the movie is over, and the friend has gone home. It’s not until late at night, when you’re alone, that you start to hear creaks in the floorboards and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Maybe watching the movie wasn’t such a good idea. Why we watch horror movies in the first place is an interesting phenomenon; it’s shocking that we would want to subject ourselves to such fear. However, we are drawn in by the morbid fascination that comes with psychologically thrilling movies. There is more than meets the eye when it comes to serial killers, and the ultimate example of that is The Silence of the Lambs. The viewer fears and yet at the same time hangs on the chilling words, “Hello, Clarice.” The horror film is our own worst nightmare—it is an exploration about punishment and damnation, and in each one of us, there is that fear and fascination. Yet, we keep coming back for more. The Silence of the Lambs opens with a young woman Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster, running and climbing through an obstacle course in the woods.

    Bisexuality seems to me an ironic way of saying something about the way one chooses not to only occupy one’s biological destiny. Sexuality, Gender and Sexual Orientation I restarted this lecture sitting by turns under a tree, on a couch by an open window and at one point I was sitting on a dock. Each location offered a different way to begin, but water was always present. On the dock I found myself periodically staring into the water watching various sized fish drift by and I realized I was often in a preconscious world, feeling the dread of this impending lecture moment, excited and stimulated in my thoughts and lost in the chorus of theoretical voices I had been reading and thinking against. I watched my shadow slide across the water as the sun came up. This was a privileged position to be in and a very different way of entering into thinking about gender and sexual orientation and sexuality than when I was a student in a women’s studies program in university and when I first entered into a more comprehensive dialogue with Freud and company after I entered CTP. The major differences are that I am a lot more settled in my own thinking, a lot less defended and a lot quieter in my thoughts. It was very difficult for me then to come up against a tradition that had truncated Freud into a normative and proscriptive theory in its worst moments. Before I applied to CTP I read a great deal of literature and theory on homosexuals and their lack of suitability as trainees and eventual therapists.

By historically contextualizing these texts and critiquing contemporaneous conceptualizations of transgender individuals through a modern-day trans activist lens, the way in which past societal beliefs contributed to the transmisogyny in the texts is explored. Norman Bates in Psycho is portrayed as a crossdressing man, which is presented as a symptom of being dangerously disturbed, linking gender nonconformity and mental illness to extreme violence. Jame Gumb in The Silence of the Lambs is portrayed as a transgender woman who is denied access to health care services needed to medically transition, enforcing the idea of a “false transsexual” which encourages disbelief of trans people’s self- identification. Virginie Delorme in The Mantis is portrayed as a trans woman who was similarly refused sex reassignment surgery and is rejected by men because of her poorly performed clandestine vaginoplasty, supporting the transphobic notion that post-operative trans women are merely mutilated men.
