New Delhi INTRODUCTION

In preparing a bibilography of Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, one is faced with an almost impossible task. The wide variety of topics covered is only surpassed by the great range of journals in which he wrote. He published in many lands as far apart as America and Japan, and often in obscure scholarly journals that have long since ceased to be printed. Some of his writings appear ed in surprisingly "popular" journals that are rarely preserved in libraries.

Copyright Dr. RAMA P. COOMARASWAMY Mr. James Crouch of Australia has embarked upon the task Dearfield Medical Building, 4, Dearfield Drive of compiling a complete bibliography and has completed the Greenwich, Conn. 06830 (U.S.A.) period of 1900-1906. This has been published in The Ceylon Journal of Historical and Social Studies, (Vol. III, July-December 1973, pp. 54-66.). His work will take many years to complete. The present bibliography makes no claim to completeness - indeed the important area of book reviews has been entirely omitted. Its aim is to bring together in one place the major essays, and to inform the reader where these may be located. In addition, and appendix is added that lists the publications of "Collected Essays" and their contents.

The present compiler wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. James Crouch for the period 1_900-1906 and for his corre ctions to the draft form of this bibliography; to Ars Islamica (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Vol. XX for the initial bibliography; to the bibliography prepared by him and Mrs. Coomaraswamy in 1948 ; to Durai Raja Singam ofMalayasia; to Dr. Roger Lipsey, to the library of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and above all to Princeton University Press for their assistance which at all times has been most generous.
