Getting Creative About Development
Atlantic Council AFRICA CENTER ISSUE BRIEF Getting Creative About Development SEPTEMBER 2018 AUBREY HRUBY y 2035, sub-Saharan Africa will have more working-age people than the rest of the world combined. African governments col- lectively need to create eighteen million new jobs each year to absorb the large, young, and ambitious population coming to Bworking age.1 But technological advances, combined with the underde- veloped infrastructure of most African nations, mean that the tried and true model of export-oriented industrialization, which allowed the East and Southeast Asian economies to develop very rapidly, is unlikely to produce adequate job creation in the vast majority of African markets. In fact, manufacturing as a share of total economic activity in Africa has stagnated at about 10 percent,2 and—though there are notable excep- tions, such as Ethiopia—the continent as a whole is deindustrializing.3 Agriculture still continues to serve as the backbone of most African economies, with over 70 percent of Africans earning a living in that sector.4 But as Africa urbanizes, the composition of economic activity is rap- idly changing, shifting away from agriculture and towards the services sector. In 2015, services accounted for 58 percent of sub-Saharan GDP (up from 47 percent in 2005).5 More significantly, 33 percent of African 1 Céline Allard et al., Regional Economic Outlook: sub-Saharan Africa 2015, Internation- al Monetary Fund, April 2015, https://www.imf.org/~/media/Websites/IMF/import- ed-flagship-issues/external/pubs/ft/reo/2015/afr/eng/pdf/_sreo0415pdf.ashx. 2 Brahima Sangafowa Coulibaly, “Africa’s Alternative Path to Development,” The Brook- ings Institution, May 3, 2018, https://www.brookings.edu/opinions/africas-alterna- tive-path-to-development/. -
'Sexual Largess' Themes, Lyrics and Images in Nigerian Hip- Hop
1 Sexuality and ‘Sexual Largess’ Themes, Lyrics and Images in Nigerian Hip- Hop Music Videos: A Content Analysis By Jemisenia John Oluwaseyi 08032070010 [email protected] & Ezenagu Nnedinma Roseline 08054805605 [email protected] Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Nigeria Nsukka Abstract Sexual contents in the media have received great attention from scholars and researchers since the 1980s till present, regrettably very little has been done in this area of research in Nigeria, where increasing controversies have continued to trail the contents of videos that are shown on such terrestrial channels as Channel ‘O’, Hip-TV, Soundcity, Mtv base, and BET. Issues surrounding the rate of sexuality, sex, sexism, objectification, materialism, and the ‘good life’ (as it is shown on these music channels) have come under intense scrutiny by observers, commentators, scholars and the general public. Consequently, this study analyzed themes, lyrics and images bordering on sexuality and sexual largess in Nigerian Hip-Hop music videos on two popular stations on the terrestrial channels: Soundcity and Hip.Tv music channels between the periods of April to June, 2015. Through a multi-stage sampling technique, 132 videos were selected for analysis. Two independent coders were trained. The Cohen’s kappa (k) symmetric measure of agreement was employed in order to ensure the reliability of items. The Cohen’s kappa (k) for this study was 0.792. Altogether, result revealed that sexual themes, lyrics and images that are derogatory to womanhood are predominant in the analyzed music videos. The study recommends among others, enlightenment on the part of musicians/artistes on the need to promote messages of gender equality. -

An Appraisal of the State of Professional Songwriting
AN APPRAISAL OF THE STATE OF PROFESSIONAL SONGWRITING ON THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction Nelson (2010), making reference to a Music quote by Henry Giles, mentioned that “A song will outlive all sermons in the memory”. “Every song is like a painting”, Dale (2013) and every picture tells a story. Also, “Great music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and leaves the memory with difficulty because Magical music never leaves the memory”, Beecham (2015). Songwriting may mean different things to different songwriters and at different times. Songwriting, like any other creative endeavor, can be meaningful in a variety of ways. So while there are some objective ways to determine “good” or “bad” when it comes to songwriting, it is also a creative space open to a myriad of options. “A Creative mind has the ability to make discoveries and create innovations”, Rivera, (2014). 1.1 Background to the Study The American Heritage Dictionary of English language, 5thEdition, (2013) defines a songwriter as one who writes lyrics or tunes (or both). They are often referred to as ballad makers, tunesmiths, composers - someone who writes the lyrics and usually the Music of Songs. To some extent a songwriter is much like a storyteller and the listeners are his captive audience. Most songs revolve around a central theme such as love, friendship, struggle, triumph, or other forms of experiences, etc. Every song tells a different story while each song usually contains an atom or 1 atoms of uniqueness which makes them differ from the works of other composers and songwriters.
