During the days when the sport was booming and there were no limits to book sizes, certain stallions were being bred to as many as 300 mares. In 1980, Precious Fella was bred to 311 mares, a modern-day record for a U.S. stallion. B.G's Bunny was bred to 305 in 1979. But Leavitt doesn't believe the existing rule went far enough. He is now proposing that, eventually, no stallion be allowed to bred to more than 100 mares. He attempted to get the current rule changed last month at the USTA's annual board of directors meeting but was tripped up by a procedural problem. He said he would try again in 2012. "The reason for the change: To offset, at least partially, the depletion of the gene pool of the American standard- bred," Leavitt wrote in an explanation to USTA directors as to why he was advocating a rule change. Leavitt said he awoke to the problems of so much in- breeding when he came across the work of Judy King, who, at the time, was a graduate student at the University of Kentucky. Her master's thesis was entitled: "Changes in Heterozygosity Through Time in American Standardbred and American Saddlebred Horses."
